Morning chaps, what's with this -5 rubbish? Perfectly happy for Joaquin to continue though.
By:
Same thing every year now. Players storm social media in the lead up with videos of balls rolling 50 yards down glass greens and hacking out of knee high cabbage bemoaning the impossibility of it all then come out and shoot bloody -5 in round 1.

Sure they are planning to turn the screw as the event goes on, but the number of guys under par right now is disappointing.
By:
was initially disappointed but i'm thinking this is deffo on purpose, uspga going to prove a point over weekend.
replace soft greens and easy pins with rock hard bald greens and tight pins, add in an extra inch growth in rough, MARK MY WORDS THIS IS GOING TO BE SAVAGE ON THE WEEKEND!!! |
By:
They'll be desperately hoping it doesn't rain though.
By:
Correct TB. With this start and some rain we'll have a double digit under par winner again.
By:
nothing forecast and saturday due a bit more wind aswell, choosing to place the pins where they have knowing it was soft, has to be part of the plan.
All this talk of overpowering course etc etc, i think they wanna say "dont get c0cky we can still screw you WHEN WE WANT TOO". |

A few not finding it easy. DJ and Berger big surprises, when was the last time Daniel was +3 in a round.
By:
I think the days of +5 winning are gone, without extreme or unfair conditions - the players and equipment have improved too much. But the USGA seem to consistently get it wrong these days. Pebble last year was a fiasco, barely more difficult than the February pro-am. They haven't adapted their approach to the modern game - just growing the rough isn't enough any more.
By:
They had their chance a couple years back at Shinnecock, Brooks won with +1, would have been +6 if they didn't hit the abort button after the 3rd round. They really have lost their nerve in recent years.

I've sorted out Joaquin well and proper. Made a comment then immediate bogey followed by 2 missed shorties for birdie. Forum curse remains undefeated.

It's still doable, albeit weather needs to help for +5,
BMW had em by the b0ll0cks a fortnight ago with 1 player under par after 3 rounds, just threw em a bone for the final day, and i maybe wrong but pretty much ordinary weather wise the whole tourney.. |
By:
and feel free to laugh at me if this is laughable but don't most footie pitches etc have underground heating nowadays?
couldn't be that hard to adapt for a green would it??? |
By:
I don't understand their thinking here - make it easier for them today and it's much harder to correct if there is rain like has been mentioned. Why not make it tough thu/fri and then if need be they can water the greens a little etc if they want to give a little help. Would love to know what Johnny Miller makes of it.
By:
apparently they've had an ungodly amount of rain over the last few weeks, maybe thinking they needed the extra couple of dry days? just guessing does seem illogical in many ways.

Just saw this tweet from Scott Hend, sounds like they well and truly bottled it.
To be honest... it's very disappointing that they came out and trimmed all the rough and around the bunkers also watered the greens. Sub Air was on but I guess they changed their minds about the firmness Balls spinning and hardly any bounce Was a big change from Monday. |
By:
The course was right on the edge system, but by watering in the morning the early starters could rip it up and as it firmed over the day it was a significantly different course for the late starters. Fleetwood nearly won from a mile back playing target golf.

By:
Not sure why a guy who shot 4 over is complaining about them making it too easy mind you.

It is perplexing that the organisers of the US Open are scared to deliver what everyone wants and expects out of a US Open.

Most recent forecast has levelled out a bit, still looks a slight edge to the late starters.

Which if the greens haven't been watered and they firm out a bit later is likely a moot point.
