Ogilvy and Appleby are the best here but obviously neither is in the tournament. Course is really long but plays downhill. I'll take a shot on Dustin Johnson and maybe Stricker. Too bad Tiger and Mickelson refuse to play in Hawaii.

Is it Dog The Bounty Hunter looking for Tiger and Leftie? |
By:
Has the putter rules come into play already, if so bradley and peterson have to be a lay at those prices imo
By:
No chief. The putting changes are only out for consultation at the moment. The rule doesn't come into until 2016.
A wide open event. Great to see the PGA Tour back. |

Cheers MW - in that case ill be sticking KB this year as thought he wouldn't be the same with the old putter, I expect KB to win a few times this year hopefully making me a few quid along the way. Think 16's is short at present though!!

Best bet for me this week Ryan Moore (23). Last appearance in this 2010 6th (-17),played the best golf of his career towards the end of last season and hopefully that will continue into this.
By:
2 against the field for me this week - Watney & Piercy, both of whom finished the season strongly and hopeful of a promising start..gl all, great to see the golf back..

Jason Dufner is a golfer I'll be looking to back this year when the course suits him, but I'm not sure that'll be this week, so he's passed over. I like the look of Webb Simpson this week, his game should suit the course (as 4 rounds in the 60s last year testifies) and with a major under his belt his upwards progression should continue.
0.5pts Webb Simpson @ 14/1 |
By:
Quiet outright market atm, maybe due to a Friday start and 10hr UK time difference I guess..
By:
Agree with Rob. Watney looked far more consistent towards the end of last year and this course has suited in the past and a small amount of improvement will see him bang there.
By:
Just seen on PGA tour site that Watney & Stanley have both changed to Nike clubs from Jan 1st so think they're both best watched for a few weeks to see if change effects them.
By:
Fair point Sundog, I guess that there's a lot taken on trust at this time of the year...still ok with Watney tho..
By:
First bets matche. Backed Keegan Bradley @ 17.00 and laid @ 16.5....Keegan + €50 The Field neutral
By:
I like the Ryan Moore selection Merlin. Was brilliant in the tail end of last season. For a long shot, Mark Wilson is perhaps worth a poke, he is the January Man

When looking at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions there was one trend that
struck me and there was only ever going to be one likely selection for me - defending champion Steve Stricker The list below shows how all defending champions have fared at Kapalua 99 Duval 3rd 00 Woods 8th 01 Furyk 4th ** 02 Garcia 25th 03 Els 21st 04 Appleby 1st ** 05 Appleby 1st ** 06 Appleby 13th 07 Singh 12th 08 Chopra 27th ** 09 Ogilvy 1st ** 10 Ogilvy DNP 11 Byrd 3rd ** You have to admit overall it's been quite an impressive performance from defending champions in the past compared to other tournaments although you do have to take on board the limited field. What becomes even more interesting is when you look at those marked ** - for those players the Champions event represented their only strokeplay win the year before and Stricker falls into that category. It won't have been the first time he has successfully defended a title as he won the John Deere three years on the bounce. He does have a few other positives as well - his other course form recently reads 2/10/4. In 2007 he began his season in the Sony Open and finished 4th and in 2001 he won the World Matchplay on his seasonal bow. He has more reason to continue this trend of fast starting as this year he is only going to play ten events so he can spend more time with his family and says he has to be really well prepared for events he does play. Finally we have to look at the price - in a slightly weaker field last year he was 8/1 so 14/1 this time round is more than fair - 0.75 e/w |
By:
I can understand your logic muppet but Stricker seems a broken man to me reading his recent comments.
His decision to cut his schedule back to ten events this year is interesting. I know he never plays a lot and it may keep him fresh but surely such a lack of competitive action will take its toll. |
By:
Admittedly he took the RC defeat hard but he says he has moved on and tbh I think he has been in darker places in his career. Tell you one thing - he is the same age as me and I wish I had earned $35m lol
By:
I like Stricker he has had a good career and his career winnings are mind boogling really. Will probably with a couple million more this year.
That said he was poor the second half of last year. Good luck with your bet tho. |
By:
R.Moore@22. just turned 30 and has become a 1st time daddy.
J.Blixt@40. superb putter who should win again this year. K.Bradley@16.5. Good first attempt last year, should improve for that experience. Good Luck for the season. ![]() |
By:
Don't know what to make of Stricker's reduced schedule. As TMM says he's a bigger price than last year when he came into the event without a top ten for five months. Ryder Cup did his mental state no favours and is he still struggling with an iffy shoulder?? Gotta be on the shortlist though, maybe punted after first round - never started there particularly well (68 best last year).
As for Watney - first change of club manufacturer in career, so who knows... |

ive not been tipping on the horses but i do better than most on the golf and my tip for the first tournament this year is DUSTIN JOHNSON and my reasons being...
with 4 par 5 and only 3 par 3 you would expect a big hitter to win this tourny but most will reach the par 5s on this course in 2 with massive greens to hit and so a decent putter is needed to have the edge and you need a putter who doesnt 3 putt very often with big breaks on the greens plus being massive in area and dustin very rarely 3 putts. 4 of the last 5 winners ranked in the top 60 on tour for 3 putt avoidance. good luck to all with there bets but im on with a decent bet on this my first golf bet of the year. |
By:
I will be following Brandt Snedeker this season and will have a small bet this week. Since finishing tenth here in 2008, his career has been interupted by injury. He has had surgery on both hips in the last two years, but showed his true class toward the end of the season with his Fed-Ex Cup triumph. I expect him to improve his #10 World ranking this year whatever his fate this week.
Ryan Moore is another who finished 2012 in style and he should also pay his way this season. Those are my two against the field in Kapalua. |
By:
i see where muppet is going.
this tourney is a little like tiger's tourney at sherwood where many winners have been runners up and vice versa i guess ![]() g mac then saluted which went with that trend. he had no real form as far as i could see, so i over thought it and didnt back him pre tourney and was seething remember? i went for furyk, zach instead ![]() this tourney is much the same, with previous year's form meaning not much it appears with the ushering in of a new year. having said that, my gut says stricker doesn't win. my head says i should be on stricker watch. so besides backing poulter and blixt, if stricker even looks like it i'm on ![]() this is the first tourney of the friggin year guys, so his schedule doesnt matter one iota yet. maybe his 5th tourney we can debate the merits of his schedule. |
By:
Good final point really Pokeron - he is in pretty much the same position as anyone else. You should check out Poulter on Twitter - he is none too confident!! - not even landed yet
By:
i know muppet , but 80% of the time i back my captain all the time
![]() |
By:
haha. he thinks he should 40-1
By:
ive laid the following
poulter huh petterson gainey stanley beljan |
By:
I've been reading Poulter's twitter as well and have backed Pettersson for top European at 9/4
By:
i want his golf studio. and his three tvs. makes punting easier...
By:
Where did you get 9/4 please lowfields?
By:
Was with PP. Looks like best price is now 2/1
By:
Ok cheers, I have also backed him but only got 2/1. Good luck with your bet!
By:
Gone for a couple of the later starters for the the 1st Round lead. No conditions bias but at least they will know the score to beat.
Charlie Beljan 33/1 ew 1-4 Tommy Gainey 33/1 ew 1-4 |
By:
Snedeker 16.5
Moore 21 In the hope that both hit the ground running after finishing last season off strongly. Have also played well at this venue in their sole starts. |
By:
ok so who else got caught out by the Friday start?
![]() |
By:
Won't be far off Saturday for UK punters, and well into the weekend for Oz backers unless I've made an error!..sure that'll be confirmed if so..
![]() |
By:
Have my no loss scenario in place for a possible profit. Bradley and Watney both + €50 and a neutral field. No heroics. Will now wait and lay a leader in running at some stage as this puzzle is a bookies bonanza.

Got me thinking of when the finish will be now KR! - Assuming a round 4 midday Hawaii start on Monday, and roughly a 4pm finish as a 2 ball format, then it will be a 2am Tuesday finish UK, and a Tuesday midday..ish finish in East Coast Oz..
..in running will need some stamina.. |
