Mickleson played really well last week, in the same wet conditions as will be this week.
Thoughts? Worth a shout? Currently 40's ish... |
|
By:
I think Mickelson is always worth a punt at 40s personally
he is a multiple major winnner and can beat anyone on his weekend. |
|
By:
Mickelson and Westwood both started well and then went steadily backwards . Very poor from 2 such experienced players , and they could not blame the conditions .
Overall the standard of golf was not up to my expectations . Nothing hard out there today except bunkers and severe rough ( where the ball should not be ) . And the greens were running true and even paced . |

Apart from Snedeker and Donald today the golf has been very average . And course could be taken apart by someone playing well . Hopefully this afternoon will be better overall .

Thorbjorn Olesen Today plan is to start trading on Dufner and Aiken. |

Afternoon was better thank goodness . Obviously Snedeker and Scott came up with the scores , expect some one to pop up today and give them a run for their money .

Terrible swing on the first from Rory . And after 2 hours yesterday on the range ?
|
|
By:
dreadful hope he shoots 100. Pod's teeth are off putting

The lack of any depth on the leaderboard from these shores is worrying . Apart from Gmac basically there is no presence , despite the often quoted fact that the top 3 rated golfers in the world rankings are from here . The leaderboard is full of ROW and Americans .
The course has been playing easy peasy unless you are making a deliberate effort not to avoid bunkers . Anyone who has kept the ball fairly straight and not attempted impossible shots has done well relative to their ability . Have we in these isles lost our traditional ability to play on links courses ? |
|
By:
In fairness Kelly it hasn't played like a true links this week
|
|
By:
Know that Mighty Whites , but to me that just removes one of the excuses . Its still links turf , and the inability to put the ball close to the flag with wedges etc in your hand has been very disappointing . The greens are running true , not too fast , cant blame them . Water in the bunkers is a problem , that rule needs to be looked at .
Just think that possibly the current breed find it difficult to "play golf" on courses with slightly different problems than they face week in and week out on the normal tour schedule . |
|
By:
Think you are being a bit harsh. There are 5 GB & Irl players in the world top 20. McDowell has a good chance, Donald will probably 10. The truth is the Americans have much more strength in depth.

Possibly being a bit harsh , Mighty , but the challenge from our top players has been so disappointing .
Reference the course , which is a Colt course , essentially fair therefore , question arises as to the bunkers . Any resemblance between the bunkers at Lytham and the bunkers on the Colt courses I grew up playing ( and still do occasionally) is very marginal . Wonder have they deepened them ? I am sure that Colt did not have rivetted faces on them , which means that often players have to play out sideways or backwards . Some commentators have described the course as "quirky " . Dont see that much apart from the bunker questions , think its the players who are a bit quirky when faced with a problem they dont like . Golf was not always meant to be fair unless you were on the fairway , in the old days players coped with the vicissitudes because they had to , the Open was one of the few decent potential money earning tournaments available to guys who sometimes struggled to make a decent living from looking after the members . Nowadays its just a hop on the next jet to somewhere the pastures are green and easier . Having said that , the Open winner in 1953 got just over £300 , the winner of the Irish Open that year ( at Belvoir Park in Belfast suburbs ) got £750 ( sterling , not punts ) . But I suppose there was also the Claret Jug . The medal for that Irish Open win ( Eric Brown ) was sold at auction a few years ago for £3000 I believe . Belvoir did not buy it , regretfully I suspect , its not even as much as the initial entry fee there . |

luke doesnt seem to be an open player, but still around 10-20th ....should be doing better round here ???
i didnt expect westwood to do well here, he doesnt seem to enjoy links golf rory has been out of form for a while, found a 67 to open but couldnt keep it going rose stuffed by being paired with tiger (again) ...not the greatest excuse but you would think they would give the lad a break in his home open g mac enjoying the scrap, holed some putts, right in there scott has been handed a massive advantage simply for driving the ball so well, fair dos to him |
