Going next Thursday and might also pop up for half a day to one of the practice days if I can get away.
My first Open, very excited. One bet so far, Dusty Johnson @ 40's |

Staying in Lancaster for 3 nights from tomorrow intend going to Lytham on Thursday for a look round. Expect the rough to be lush and brutal though.

Added Leishman at 680s, fair price. Having a good year and have played at his home track in Australia numerous times - set amongst dunes just off the beach in one of the windiest, coldest and wettest parts of Victoria. 20 mins down the road is the only bona fide links that I know of on the Ozzie mainland. If we get the traditional Open weather he will be right at home and with the confidence of now being a Tour winner, is worth a stab.

WQhich course is that Rhino ?
Did not see any links courses when I was on holiday in OZ , Western Australia and Queensland , so was not around Sydney or Melbourne . Thought that the sand belt courses were links , looked linksy when on TV a while back . But I suppose unless you played or walked them we only have the locals view on what constitutes a proper links . Open on this one ( links judgement ) , not Lytham ! |
|
By:
Kelly none of the sandbelt are links courses, they are all parkland. The bunkering may give you that impression if watching on TV but take my word for it none of them are a links. Leishman's home track is Warrnambool Golf Club, the road into the clubhouse they even named after him. The course down the road is Port Fairy Golf Links and as these are the only 2 real quality courses in that part of the world, can imagine he's had plenty of links experience.
Basically we have Port Fairy in Victoria and Barnbougle Dunes in Tas, plenty of links inspired courses, but aside from those two I don't know of any other genuine links. Port Fairy is the closest thing I've experienced to what you guys have over there. |

Can anyone shed any light on what its gonna take for Stenson to get a place at the Open. Cheers.

Needs to be leading player, not otherwise exempt, in top 5 this week.

Rhino , interesting observations . Have only seen the Aussie "links " courses on TV . One at least was a Colt course , which most of us in these isles are familiar with , even if we dont realise it at the time . Certainly the one I am thinking about from the TV had very distinctive Colt ( McKenzie equals ) bunkering which led me to a direct comparison with our , mainly traditional , links courses. Thinking of Portrush , Rosses Point , Royal Dublin , Newcastle ( elements ) this side of our pond .
Looking at the field for the Open , none of the short priced ones have my confidence , Tiger has played there twice , once as an amateur ( but he is Tiger ) , but not rattled the crossbar when he was playing better than recently and more consistently , Rory has "disappeared " tournament wise , Westwood disappointing recently , likewise Luke , Sergio gone walkabout , etc etc . So a 680 shot might just pop up or present good trading opportunities . On the basis of what I saw on the practice day at the Irish Open , I backed Siem for that tournament , played well until he backed out sometime on the Saturday , I had traded out for small profit plus possibilities . Wins the following week ! No bet . Might give punters a run for their money at a big price for the Open . Cheers . |

Thanks Maggot. Backed him 2 weeks ago and have just realised he's not a certainty. Ill be cheering him on this week so.

A wee bit of pocket talking here, but at 1000, I really do think that Matthew Baldwin looks a fair punt. I'm on.

Really looking forward to this. I rarely post now as my ipad doesnt allow the community aspect.
Taken quite a few early doors value, like Mahan at 75s, but will wait for the draw and weather before piling in. |

Dawsy, you must be an exceptionally shrewd individual. At least learn the player's name before posting a tip.

Anyone know if Tiger has been over to Ireland for some prep work before next week ?
|
|
By:
I heard that he has been to Hoylake, which is pretty pointless, because it if he thinks he's going around lytham with a 3 iron, he's fooked, i live 12 miles away and it's been pissing down since may14th...i just hope we have 1 nice day next week, i don't want to be piss wet through all 5 days.

Cant remember an Open recently where it has not been possible to fancy fairly strongly some of the shorter priced players . I think anyone could win this one , Lytham tends to suit the Americans better than some of our other Open courses , but which one of about 30 ? Results on both tours recently indicate a bit of a lottery . But none of the bookies are stepping out of line , players at 130 plus on here are max 80/1 in the bookies .
|
|
By:
Americans tend to do pretty well at the open. They have won 11 of the last 17 and 20 of the last 38.

T Bjorn 80/1 (6 places ew)
F Jacobson 100/1 (6 places ew) R Jacquelin 150/1 (6 places ew) R Cabrera-Bello 170/1 (Betfair) T Lehman 620/1 (Betfair) M Fraser 640/1 (Betfair) Very happy with these six to go to war with antepost, although certain shrewdies have snaffled even bigger value on them than me Cannot wait for Thursday, another four days of incredible drama hopefully awaits. Straws in the wind pointing me towards 2 who have tightened up in last couple of days . Rory and Phil . Always interesting to watch at least . Might be suited by conditions next week . Cheers .

Charl 1.5K laid back most at 80s
Larrazabal 2.6K backed at 570 laid off at 410 and 480 Fraser 4.4K backed at 750 laid off at 370 and 400 Leishman 6.8K backed at 680 staying in Ishikawa 4.7K just backed at 500 Siem 400 Ramsay 300 The last 2 traded majority stakes back at bigger odds than backed. Got them a bit wrong. Field -36, pretty happy with that with a week to go, very small liability and some nice greens. Have my eye on a few right now but it's getting harder by the day, hopefully a few more higher price freebies and then have a proper look at some of the better fancies closer to Thursday. |

Forgot Quiros, free 600 on him backed at 390 laid off at 320.

My worst fear is Lytham will play like a parkland course this week, and if the wind does not blow sufficiently, the R&A will trick it up with sadistic hole locations, especially at the weekend.
