No hype to date on this , compared with the Masters and the US Open ( but maybe its to do with Sky ) . Plus the Olympics taking the headlines ( not always for the right reasons , nobody I know got tickets despite wide and varied applications ) .

The current odds on Betfair indicate no great rush to lay at the quoted figures , the lay percentage is 91% , so cant blame layers . Looks like few punters out there .

The odds fluctuations on the top 5 in the betting have been huge  , Tiger is around 9 , having been twice that and half that , laid him myself last week at 5.7 and 5.8 . Likewise Rory has been down to 6 ( I laid him at 6.2 and 6.4 recently) , and out to mid teens .  Luke is now near 20 , not sure how low he was , but current odds indicate value for him .  Lee John has been the steadiest , as befits his play , but with a slightly disappointing finish to the US Open I expect his odds to lengthen .

Peter Hanson was 32 , what was that about ?  Louis you couldn't give away at the moment  , and Bubba something similar . Furyk was comfortable 100/1 last week  with decent bookies ( good odds ) but down to less than half that on here , just wonder does everybody not use comparative odds sites ?  Or maybe their accounts have been closed or restricted !

Obviusly Gmac , Padraig , Martin , Webb and Ernie have reacted downwards , possibly because of the US Open , or maybe because they have dedicated followers ( and can all play ) .

With the summer thats in it so far , likely that weather conditions plus  draw factors attendant on that will play a bigger than usual part in the final scenario .  Everything that has transpired so far leads me to conclude that no one is approaching the tournament with hugely defined prospects .  Could it yield another Dazza type result ( but specifically not a double for him according to current odds ) ?

you'd expect pod to have shortened as he has an open history, and found a bit of form

he may need a poorly wrist to get his odds back out Mischief

11 years since they played at lytham makes it harder to pick a winner

but duval and lehman as past winners suggests there is nothing to prevent another top american doing well there.

Duval and Lehman were both very good ( in Double D's case brilliant ) and consistent players and you could have landed on them without following a flash of lightning , Donny .  Harder to figure out the top Yanks at the moment , they can flash across the firmament in the blink of an eye , but they dont have the constancy of the planets . Brilliant betimes ( a la Ricky ) , but consistent winners ? ..trickier .

Might be time for a continental European , Europe could do with a bit of good news at present !

yes, agree with all of that

seve won there twice, and doubtless will be missed more than ever this year

all this rain would suggest they should have it in top nick for july

i didnt see rory's name on the list of lytham trophy winners, do you know what he thinks of the course ???

Pod looks to be back in the groove, must have a great chance of a third claret jug, but as usual draw will be key also to a lot of the fields chances unless the weather improves a lot over the next month or so.

Donny , no idea of Rorys attitude to Royal Lytham , think he tends to make up his own mind mostly rather than listen to advice .  OK when it works , but can leave you in a lonely place when it doesn't . Still dont think he appreciates wind , which could be a factor come a months time .

Deplasterer , Padraigs comments last night post round were insightful , looking for non birdie fest courses essentially . Wouldn't put anyone off backing him , but he has got to be  a pretty short price given his lack of win / play ratio these last 2 years plus . Might go well at Portrush , he knows how to scramble there based on a friends  personal experience playing him some  years ago . And it wont be a birdie fest .

Where is the open this year? My favourite venue to watch is Carnoustie.

It's at Wentworth this year, Luke should go well.

Didn't David Duval win it the last time the Open was there? I'm going to go out on a limb and say he won't win it this time Excited

Wentworth is not an Open venue. it's at Royal Lytham & St Annes this year.

Luke will still go well though! Expect plenty of woosie interviews this year after the 15th club episode last time, similar to mark roe last year.(neither would have won anyway).Remember the greens were a disaster when lehman won in 96.
A par 3 to start with is very strange,be nice to see a hole in one on the first morning!

LYTHAM: One of my favourite venues, but the place needs WIND, as the BUNKERS are it's only defence these days. Ostensibly it is a stadium course with the railway on one side & houses on the other, with both nines ending at a narrow point. Experience tells me that with obvious huge crowds, ROUGH will be hugely trampled down quite early on. I hear that mounds have been created to the left of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th holes to maintain rough & enhance the gallery viewing.

MEMORIES:

1974 was dodgy on the 71st hole.
1979 was magnificent (Seve)
1988 even better (Seve)
1996 was a flat calm picnic for Lehman.
1991 was attritional excellence from Duval. (his 2nd to 15 on day 4 was something else)

The 9th at Lytham is the most understated par 3 on the "open rota" imo.

No doubt we'll get the Tiger bandwagon coming out with "he's back" yet again.
But looking at his record in majors some interesting patterns are emerging.

Masters 1997 wins by 12
Masters 2001 wins by 2
Masters 2002 wins by 3
Masters 2005 wins in a play off

Open 2000 wins by 8
Open 2005 wins by 5
Open 2006 wins by 2

PGA 1999 wins by 1
PGA 2000 wins in a play off
PGA 2006 wins by 5
PGA 2007 won by 2

US open 2000 won by 15
US open 2002 won by 3
Us open 2008 won in a play off

In each of the major categories it has become it appears  to be increasingly harder to win his majors apart from the pga.
No majors since 2008 and a general decline in his superioty suggests any future majors may well come on courses he has had a degree of success at before.
Note US opens at the olympic club

1998 T woods Tied 18th
2012 T woods Tied 21st

The Masters at Augusta(only major played at same venue every year)

2006 T woods Tied 3rd
2007 T woods Tied 2nd
2008 T woods 2nd
2009 T woods Tied 6th
2010 T woods Tied 4th
2011 T woods Tied 4th
2012 T woods Tied 40th

British open

2007 T woods Tied 12th
2008 T woods DNP
2009 T woods cut
2010 T woods Tied 23rd
2011 T woods Tied DNP

British opens at this years venue Royal Lytham & st annes

1996 T woods Tied 22nd
2001 T woods Tied 25th

So given this years performances in majors, age and history of info on Tiger,my personnal opinion is you can lay him till the cows come home on this course,he wont win.
Beating professional losers like Bo van pelt doesnt mean a return to his old abilities.
He can neither sustain his driving or putting over 4 days on most championship courses like he used to,maybe all.
Winning another one will prove difficult, not opinion,FACT.

Really hope Marcus Fraser qualifies, in excellent form on the Euro tour this year and have him matched at 750s here, my one and only bet thus far. If he gets in the price is big.

I've got £10 riding on him @ 760, Rhino, and I believe that he has already qualified.

Fraser , ability OK , but is he tough enough ?

Still at those odds definitely value , even if it only turns out to be anticipation . Trading opportunity maybe .

Tiger looked quite good last night , albeit nobody but Bo ( and Adam early) put anything up to him .

My memories from the last Lytham Open - £100 at 66/1; £100 at 100/1 Niclas Fasth who was leading in the clubhouse until Duval cruised it.  No Betfair then.

Can any of our English friends give us a clue as to how your golf courses are faring at the moment? Are we likely to see the knee high rough this year?

Jaquelin played well for a long way when the Open was last played at Lytham, saw him and Fasth play well together on the third day and was right next to Greg Owen when he got his albatross with that towering two-iron. I notice Jaquelin has played well in US Open and in French Open. He could be a good outsider though I am aware he is not a good finisher.

Can't talk for Lytham, but the summer has been brutal rhino, so would imagine the rough will be like the weather.

I want knee high dammit... Hell, I want neck high, I want to see marshalls going on search parties for golfers who stray from the fairway. The way it should be.

Took Schwartzel at 95s by the way, great price the man has the game for the Open.
