kind of a self fullfilling prophecy.....someone complaining about mug punter money leaving betfair and then using a different outfit himself !

Have BF thought about making the minimum bet of £1 available ?

must be a few experiencing hard times who would still like to bet,or even those who want to bet on a 100/1 outsider say  - must be missing out on a fair bit on all those pound bets  (wagered with  the bookies)

I agree, the purple site seem to do this with some degree of success so why not.

Totally agree with that - silly that no-one can put in pound bet at 50/1

Shouldn't be a problem with £1bets, they offer cashouts for tiny amounts when markets are slightly lob sided.

£800,000 matched on Cheltenham Charity Race...we sure about this big decline?

As has been said, it's not across the board and punters are starting to congregate on major events/markets which is boosting liquidity there.  For instance, I traded all the Cheltenham markets despite the fact I've only traded the Grand National before.  It's also the type of liquidity decline, i.e. most events are dead until the hour or so before they start and then there's as much if not more than there used to be.

Yeah it's already been mentioned on this thread that cricket has been growing (quite fast as well).
Golf has been growing.
Football is static I think, but there has been a shift away from smaller side markets.
For example, I made tens of thousands (£) just from the football total goals market in 2009, all manually through the website.

Good luck to anyone trying to do that now.

Admittedly the total goals market is redundant, because you have all the over/unders markets.... But really it's the over/unders markets that are redundant (except for OU7.5 and OU8.5). It's far better to bet on total goals than Over/Unders because you share commission for all the goals selections on one market. And yet all the liquidity concentrates in the OU's. There is that silly Asian handicap increment thing (you can bet at odds of 32.47 etc.), but it really is a bit strange.

Although the side markets as a whole aren't doing well, some side markets will grow...

And good luck getting on in American sports, the markets are flatter than a fiddler's fart.Scared

The point is simply this. If you only play the single biggest market in a sport then liquidity is pretty decent. Beyond that it is absolutely absymal and getting worse. The problem long term is that those main markets are dominated by fewer and fewer huge players. It means that there will be huge numbers of people who leave Betfair as they cannot compete with the various charges, lack of liquidity in other markets, shrewdness of the main markets etc. They are a hugely important part of the ecosystem but BF is systematically driving them away.

That's kind of happened to me with tennis. I can barely get a penny matched any more because of the change in dynamics of the market, whereas I used to have thousands on several matches a week.

folk are just switching their money to the busier markets really -  it's still there   - obviously if your niche (like mine) was in a side market that will be all but wiped out .

It's a shark fest now - you have to adapt and be good  as there is only so much of the pie Sad

zero sum , and all the other cliches

Betfair tweeted earlier that todays £79M was a record for the most traded on a market?

I would contest that's a record. Unless £79m was actually £160m and they've halved the figures themselves.

They forgot about their new record at the weekend - the least amounts ever bet on a Liverpool v Man Utd match

i did my cricket bets at matchbook its far less comm and i got same odds and 1 time better odds there. betfair is best for trading but matchbook for single bets with their respective commission structures.

In fairness I would expect the first Liverpool v Man Utd meeting of the 2000/01 season was the lowest amount matched on such a game Wink

El Classico was extremely low for some reason  as well . Although i didn't notice a difference myself .

Wouldn't surprise me if that was also cricket. Already £9m matched on the India-Oz match and it doesn't start for another three hours.

It would have been much higher if it was a decent finish too. Hardly any money matched for the final 10 overs or so

Liquidity distinctly average on England match. Qualifier. Live on council tellie. Poor really.

There definitely seems to be a decline in all round liquidity on football. I've been trading football on here for 5-6 years and it seems to be that the sportsbook is starting to drain liquidity from the exchange. Can only imagine that the huge volume traded on cricket is new money coming from India? I know officially they're not meant to have accounts, but seems like the money finds its way on here anyway.

Truth is the sportsbook is destroying the exchange ecosystem since no new little fish are finding their way there.

Liquidity distinctly average on England match
_______________

oit was poor ,but i think that was because of the nature of the scoring -  it was dead after  the second goal - would have been much busier if a closer contest

I thought the goal markets were slow. And I started playing after the first goal. There was plenty of money waiting to be matched but only small amounts matching. Too many marketmakers and not enough markettakers.

Nice analogy. Trying to work out if it's an exact match, though Betfair certainly seem intent on doing their best to strangle their own valuable resource.

Tennis and Football markets have all gone to pot. The huge rise in liquidity on Cricket match odds might be due to the price rush malarkey they do. The forum has died a death along with the most of the exchange. I remember the good old days!
