“...out from the door of the farmhouse came a long file of pigs, all walking on their hind legs...out came Napoleon himself, majestically upright, casting haughty glances from side to side, and with his dogs gambolling round him.

He carried a copy of a sportsbook in his trotter.

There was a deadly silence. Amazed, terrified, huddling together, the animals watched the long line of pigs march slowly round the yard. It was as though the world had turned upside-down. Then there came a moment when the first shock had worn off and when, in spite of everything-in spite of their terror of the dogs, and of the habit, developed through long years, of never complaining, never criticising, no matter what happened-they might have uttered some word of protest. But just at that moment, as though at a signal, all the sheep burst out into a tremendous bleating of-

"Betting exchange good, bookmaker better! Betting exchange good, bookmaker better! Betting exchange good, bookmaker better!"

It went on for five minutes without stopping. And by the time the sheep had quieted down, the chance to utter any protest had passed, for the pigs had marched back into the farmhouse.”

“And yet the animals never gave up hope. More, they never lost, even for an instant, their sense of honour and privilege in being members of Animal Farm. They were still the only farm in the whole county-in all England!-owned and operated by animals. Not one of them, not even the youngest, not even the newcomers who had been brought from farms ten or twenty miles away, ever ceased to marvel at that. And when they heard the gun booming and saw the green flag fluttering at the masthead, their hearts swelled with imperishable pride, and the talk turned always towards the old heroic days, the expulsion of Jones, the writing of the Seven Commandments, the great battles in which the bookmakers had been defeated. None of the old dreams had been abandoned. The Republic of the Animals which Major had foretold, when the green fields of England should be untrodden by bookmakers' overround, was still believed in. Some day it was coming: it might not be soon, it might not be with in the lifetime of any animal now living, but still it was coming. Even the tune of Beasts of England was perhaps hummed secretly here and there: at any rate, it was a fact that every animal on the farm knew it, though no one would have dared to sing it aloud. It might be that their lives were hard and that not all of their hopes had been fulfilled; but they were conscious that they were not as other animals. If they went hungry, it was not from feeding tyrannical bookmakers; if they worked hard, at least they worked for themselves. No creature among them went upon two legs. No creature called any other creature "Master." All animals were equal.”

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from bookmaker to exchange, and from exchange to bookmaker again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

worst thing they ever did.

ive never had to pay a penny up til now, yet its in my mind on most bets i place.
im constantly looking to see if i drop under that 20%
im not a trader, im a gambler. out and out value punter.
i shouldnt have to be concerning myself with such things.

according to my profile last week i would have paid £962 premium charge IF i was eligible, which im not.
i imagine it affects how many people bet who never even get charged. im very wary of large ante post bets for fear of my premimum charge percentage dropping below that 20% mark by the time its settled.

if they need to have such a scheme, at least make it a percentage on yearly profits and restrict it to customers who make big money. the lifetime thing is really unfair, i cant remember is it 120k or 250k? you could make that over 10 years by shrewd punting and lots of effort, why should you pay the charge like some big money trader who makes 50k+ a year? definitely shouldnt have to pay anything if your yearly profit isnt over about 20k imo. lifetime profits shouldnt even come in to it.

Cannot be far off and the new 7.5% commision should help the spreads widen.

I've always thought Betfair introduced PC because they knew exchange betting was nearly finished, so they were just trying to milk it as much as they could before the end.

I think the end will come when we go back to a turnover tax instead of a bookmaker's gross profits tax. This is why they are pushing the sportsbook ahead of the exchange.

Spreads are very wide on US racing tonight remember when 50/100k matched on most races now 20k if you are lucky so personaly do not punt here on that anymore with friends round for the evening, and like most posters here i bet elsewhere for my mug bets now (only a few k a week but adds up when 100s go elswhere) Shocked which should or would keep the exchange going or at least increase the liquidity to some degree in particular for the front end sports book odds. Again like most using alternatives. The irony is that betfair listed primarily as an exchange for their entry to market at approx 15 pounds from memory and is actually quite frustrating as they were so dominant, and we all know sportsbooks run at next to nothing margins so i am and remain bewildered Confused

Looking back at the webcast from the end of June the following was said:

Question?

In terms of the pricing trialing as well as doing the basic commissions and the rebates obviously you are looking at premium pricing and is the premium pricing outside the sort of core uk market? And together with that is there any indication of how much of the UK revenues are based upon the premium pricing part? As in your big main 500 customers how much do they contribute to the main UK pool?

Breon Corcoran (BF CEO)

Premium charge is obviously part of the pricing mechanic. We havent talked since I joined about any great split in terms of how that, what proportion of revenues that forms. We are doing the two things you talked about and Premium Charge is on the list. I would be delighted if we got to a place where we could change that to lower that in some way or change the mechanics so it wasnt, erm, that it didnt upset customers in the way it seems to do so. But er, I have no plans to announce it at this stage.

............................

Can anyone make sense of the reply there?

It seems they haven't even discussed how much of their revenues come from the PC. Without doing that how can they begin to do any analysis on the affect of decreasing or increasing the PC would have. It is such a key element in the future of the exchange side of the business I am very surprised that it has not even been talked about for the last year. Growth in inplay sports is masking declines in pre play markets.
By:

When: 16 Jul 13 16:35
Pre-play markets desperately need to have their commission reduced. I still say it needs to be commission free for those putting up prices and reduced for those taking a pre-play bet. Its a pricing gamble but I for one would massively increase turnover if the commission was reduced.

would possibly be easier to interpret BC's reply if the question had been better phrased.

if I was going to speculate based on what he says - which come to think of it I'm about to - I'd say they're possibly looking at relaxing higher rate PC and making up for it by increasing commission/decreasing discounts.

the new austrian points/discount bands make no real sense unless they're a trial, because in their own rite they'd make so little difference to revenue.

disclaimer: all of the above is pure guesswork based on the same info everyone else can see.

If you look at preplay soccer the serious problem is that the Asian bookies allow you to bet many thousands at a combined 102% in the run up to the game. Competing with this on 2% commission is only possible if your opponent is also on 2% and there is no premium charge. Without that I just cannot see any future in professionals using Betfair pre-play. Without the professional money there is way that liquidity can compete with what the Asian bookies offer.

Its a real shame because in theory the exchange model should be more efficient than going through a bookie. Its just in this case the middleman (betfair) has priced himself out of the market.
By:

Only the straight bettors are priced out at 2%. Trading brings commission on turnover down massively. PC has taken care of that (albeit a bit too aggressively). Now we need lower comm.

Betfair need to act fast. The big players used to bring about 10 new plays in a week no
with all the negative publicity they probably lose about 10 customers a week by telling people
the truth about betfair.
Winners are not welcome and we will tax you 60% of your winnings plus another say 4%
if you dare to pick a winner.

Is the 20% premium charge on top of commission?

How can it be worth peoples' time and effort if they are paying 20%+ in charges? People who use Betfair and pay PC, why do you do it and can you make it worth it?

I can't stop winning recently which is very bad news because I arb.  My total charges has dropped from over 30% to the low 20's% and I won't be able to arb anymore if it goes below 20% as I can't pay PC if I am arbing.

I remember reading on the forum that if your account is a PC account and you stop using it for a period of time your account will cease to be PC is that correct?

Is it even possible to be a professional gambler these days? Only pro books such as Pin and Sbo have sharp lines, limited markets and are difficult to beat, the only exchange with liquidity does not welcome winners (even if it is relatively speaking a modest amount won). All other bookies ban you.

Peter Webb's blog has an interesting point on this:

One area I don’t speak that much about, but have hinted at on the blog, is value bets. I still place value bets a lot, but since the PC came in on Betfair not that much is done here. But I have noticed that the ‘weird’ characteristics you see on Betfair more recently are helping me here as well, so I have been back exploring that arena. I can win or lose up to £1m a month on value bets. While that seems a lot, to put it into perspective, with any market your edge is often very slim. So you need to ‘go large’ to make it worthwhile.

So there is a punter willing to win or lose a million a month put off by the PC. There are punters on here willing to oppose peter's bets and win or lose a million. Yet Betfair is saying 'no thanks we dont want commission on your business'.

The whole situation is tragic. One moment of madness a few years ago bringing in the PC and the exchange has changed forever.

Shareholders should be asking serious questions as to why Betfair nolonger want to take commissions on bets between professional gamblers. This is exactly what Andrew Black's idea was supposed to be all about.

YOMOMMA,

Totally possible for the 'pro' at the moment.

Betfair provides opportunities for traders.

Racing punters can go round and round all the bookies with new accounts using them. Bet late on Betfair. If you want to play bigger the HK is much more competitive these days with the rebates in place.

Soccer punters can bet large with sbo, ibc, pin etc to 102/103% with no PC or commission. They can play around with the recs as well to quite decent money.

The shame is Betfair could be the only place for everyone to play. No PC and b3.65 style skin on the fixed odds with a pin style of making book and no one would go anywhere else in the long run.

Is the 20% premium charge on top of commission?

not really. it rounds up your weekly charges to 20% of gross profit. the more losers you have in that mix, the lower it goes.

I remember reading on the forum that if your account is a PC account and you stop using it for a period of time your account will cease to be PC is that correct?

no

ibc is invitation only, or you need an agent for them.

The way I see it is that the Betfair exchange model is flawed as someone has to win. If one batch of winning accounts has to pay 20%+ PC some of them will leave and others will win on the exchange and then they get slapped with the PC and leave. Betfair needs a complete overhaul of the commission structure and premium charge.

At least 80% of my betting is arbitrage betting and so I'm not bothered if I win or lose but if I have 1 or 2 months more like the one I've just had I'll be in PC territory.
By:

Yes in very simple terms if you were a premium charge customer, and you got a win of £100 in a particular week, and paid £5 on it in commission, and had no other wins in the week and no losses in the week, then you would pay £15 in premium charge on the Wednesday.
22.49% for me so creeping downwards but not yet at the danger area Plain

but if they're anomalous you probably won't. you're just as likely to see it go the other way, and rebuild your %age cushion.

to put the charging "crisis" into perspective, BF was a highly profitable, growing, cash rich company that had made its founders and early investors a very large amount of money before the PC was introduced.
