Fair enough, I've no problem with any of the points you've raised.

Ultimately betfair is a business and they'll do as they see fit. Where this will all finish up only time will tell.

I'm far from convinced that you're correct in that assumption frog.

Look I'm small time, but even I have various strategies that vary in profitability and strike rates etc.
And I can at very little extra effort manipulate my charges level, and thus liability to PC, by increasing the percentage volume of low marging gambling I do.
The big bot betting boys can also do this just as easily and will do.
The plunge bettors probably can't and they really contribute nothing to the health of BF.
But I qualify all my points by saying that I'm only a football bettor.
I accept that in other areas of gambling, what I say and do is perhaps not totally relevant and perhaps even way off mark.
But I have to believe that BF management understands all the different types of betting arenas it offers on here.
Maybe I'm wrong here, and they don't.

They don't understand the ethics of gambling thats for sure, and seem to be trying to re-write them. I just genuinely hope it isn't the beginning of the end for trying to win money betting in the long term or we will know who to point the finger at.

Ethics of gambling.
That's an oxymoron I've never heard before.

First they came for those who earned over 250k, and I did not speak out as I did not earn over 250k.
Then they came for those who earned over 50k, and I did not speak out as I did not earn over 50k.
Then they came for everyone else, and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Heh heh

WE ALL WILL HAVE TO PAY THESE NEW PREMIUM-CHARGES!

I TELL YOU WHY:
FIRST OF ALL: IM NOT AFFECTED BY THESE CHARGES...
BUT WE ALL ARE HERE TO MAKE OUR DREAM COME TRUE. THE DREAM OF REGULAR WINNINGS ON BETFAIR. THE DREAM TO LIVE FROM THE INCOME WHAT WE MAKE HERE. THE DREAM OF AN INDEPENDED LIVE.

SOME OF US, OR THE MOST OF US CANT HANDLE IT. THEY LOSE ALL THEIR MONEY HERE FOR WHAT THEY WORKED HARDLY EARLYER.. THE MOST OF US!
BUT THERE ARE SOME OF US WHO MANAGE IT TO REACH OUR DREAM, THAT WILL BE FEW OF US; BUT THIS FEW HAVE TO PAY UP TO 60% OR MORE CHARGES NOW!
SO THERE ARE 2 WAYS FOR US:
WAY(1): LOSE ALL OUR MONEY HERE SOONER OR LATER
WAY(2): REACH OUR DREAM, BUT HAVE TO PAY HORRIBLE CHARGES, AND QUIT THEREFORE SOONER OR LATER
BETFAIR ONLY OFFERES US THE OFFERED ODDS FROM US; AND WE JUST BET FROM THIS PLATFORM AGAINST EACH OTHER! SO WHY WE SHOULD PAY MORE THAN 5% CHARGES? 5% IS ENOUGH FOR THIS SERVICE IN MY OPINION.

Ok I got it now, different people will pay different rates.  I was told I was 40%, what is the criteria for paying 60%?
By:

I am 100% sure in next one year they will reduce 250k bar to 50k.

Charging 40 to 60% (effectively 45-65% including commission) is saying in your face that we don't want you as our customer. We tried to get rid of you people by charging 20% but it didn't had much effect. Now we want to raise the bar to 40% - 60%. If it didn't work in future we will raise it further.

one good thing is I was charged at 40% and given a cushion of 37k. so this won't come into force immediately.

What's .1 % of BF's customer base.?
How many different posters on here complaining loudly about the increased PC and saying they're going to quit ?
What's that ratio ?

How does the £250k part work? Will they assume you've paid 40% previously?

Is the first £250k really exempt, or do you make up for this later? Once again over simplifying with an example:

You make £250k net having paid 25% of GP in commission only.
You then proceed to make a total of £1m net over time. Would you end up paying roughly £400k on this (40%) or would it be closer to £365k as in 25% on the first 250k then 40% on the next £750k?

It must be deemed as an irrelevancy in the bigger scheme of things, as in 99.9% of their customers ?
By:
TheInvestor2
When: 29 Jun 11 00:19
Yes, it's irrelevant for many, but extremely important for the few. Also consider that over time, smaller long term winners will be hit, so the 0.1% is extremely likely to rise, even if Betfair don't lower the threshold.

For me this is the worst thing that's happened since the PC was introduced in 2008 in the first place. Betfair sent me an email saying it was unlikely I would have to pay, and I was paying a couple of months later.

This time, I received no communication whatsoever, like it's some kind of unimportant detail for those who won't immediately pay it. If I stick around, I would say the chances of my charges hitting 40%+ over the next 24 months are well over 95% (currently total charges generated stand at just under 22%). Difficult for me to judge that objectively of course though.

To put things into perspective, my worst ever losing streaks (peak to equity drawdown) from memory were roughly -£19k and -£14k. I consider this new charge to be far worse for me, even though I am unlikely to be affected within the next 12 months.

I've paid about £12.5k in PC, and a similar amount in commission on strategies to churn through funds that I wouldn't have deemed worthwhile in the absence of PC, plus the time I've spent on this.  Even that cumulatively is worse than my worst ever loss, and it keeps getting bigger. Over time the new charge is likely to hit me a lot harder.

I'd like to see a commitment from Betfair to keep charges stable for a long period of time like a decade or so. It's very difficult to plan ahead in an environment like this.

I almost certainly will stick around by the way. It's just that this development has brought the need for a plan B in very sharp focus.

Much more likely that they'll reduce it or abolish it altogether as they did with the 250 markets a year threshold.

When any new methods introduced there will always be people who can work the system and avoid paying.

The honest simple grinders which for the record have no bots, fast pics, hooverabilities etc etc will be crushed.

I wonder if BF now have enough super elite customers which have signed agreements in place to seed enough markets.

I still think that for those punters who are clever enough to work out how to be net winners on BF, will probably work out a way to handle the effect of the PC charge, even at the exhorbitant new level of 40 %.
Whilst I am not even close yet to be hit with that  "super " premium level, I can see from analyses of my current betting strategies that even in a worst case scenario I should still be able to earn a net 8 % pa on total revenues( defined as the total liabilities of all my bets). That's well down from my current levels, but still
enough for any " professional" or " full timer " to make a very good living.
The real unfairness imo remains the inequities that will be suffered by the successful, but inconsistent , gamblers. That is those that win big, but go through extended down periods. They will get killed by this new extra charge.
If you cannot smoothe out your performance peaks and troughs, then I think you have very serious problems in winning with the BF PC commission structure.
And there are undoubtedly many such type gamblers out there.
Rebates of some sort imo are the only reasonable solution to this major inequity.

There is a pyramid of betting. Bets that make say 50%, very hard to find and rare. Those that make 30%, quite a lot more. Ones that make 10% maybe 10 a day to decent volume, 2%, shed loads and to high volume. Certain types of premium charge payers have the bets in stock that will off set the charge. Others, in play gamblers for example, will not. But maybe I will sell them bets and actually benefit from this.

Also never forget that at these 8 % ROT levels, given the relatively small amounts of capital many successful punters use, the ROCs are still obscenely large by any conventional measures.
The big problem still remains in scaling up, but even so, I would challenge anybody to compete with gambling ROCs, in terms of making a good living. Not making squillions, but way above what the average person could ever imagine making for so little relative effort.
The dream is still well and truly alive. Perhaps not for all, but for many.

I do not think BF cares if people win a lot, they couldn't care less. What BF wants is that all money that gets uploaded by customers will overtime be turned into commission and so the uploaded money 'dries up' in BF's favour. They do not want people taking money out of accounts. The best thing for BF is (none wise) people playing against each other and eventually paying all their uploads in commission.

The question here is indeed if the new PC policy will ruin BF's own product because of liquidity being taken out of the market. I do think this possible. Personally I might really move to our purple friends and boost liquidity there. I have a traded volume with BF of over 1 mln a week. For the first time in my betting history I might regard my principles higher than my bank-balance. Fact of the matter is that when I read BF's email about this new PC structure I could only smile. The 'how dare they'-attitude is long since gone. All this has nothing to do with the great product Betfair is but all with the one-way-directed communication/attitude BF takes in these matters.

Perhaps you should have stopped right there.
BF is still leaving lots on the table for the majority of punters.
There are inequities in the PC , that's indisputable, but it's not a game killer.

why is a exchange punter winning 250k and a betfair poker player  winning 250k treated different?
all of betfairs reasoning about why they need to tax the exchange player should be valid for the poker player or does the poker player avoid charges coz he would be of in an instants to another poker site.
