I got lucky and layed backfrothecongo @ 5.6 !! others i laid, then they shortened... swings and roundabouts i guess..... though we dont have to worry too much when the bloke picking the horses is so good :-)

I started following properly the day you had 3 winners, saturday i think, so was playing catch-up a bit but nicely ahead now, long may it continue..

I got lucky and layed backfrothecongo @ 5.6 !!

Nice one - its definitely swings and roundabouts when it comes to prices. You're never going to lay them all at best price. Some you win some you lose but as long as you're on you should do ok ;-)

Shame you started on that day :-( Bit of bad luck there. Hope you've picked up those losses now mate :-)

Mango Catcher hit 100 IR. Was nearly counting my money :-) I do sometimes green up IR but didn't in that race. Would have only cost about £2.60 to be green for £ 66 ish each runner. Mind you it does eat in to your profits if you do it too often. All those £2 or £3 do add up.....

Probably best not to green up in the long run as you have faith in your selection criteria imo.

I,m pi$$ed off cos my local NH stable had a runner today, i texed my mate who is very good friend of the son of the chap who owns the place.... didnt get any feedback, so i had to assume it wasnt a going day. Had a measly £2 on pre-race @55 just for interest... bloody thing won easy :-(

As someone who kept score on his own laying; I found that even throwing 50 pence or a pound back into the pool when a horse hit 40, 50, 100 was worth while in the long run. Every once in a while, a horse will roll back then shoot forward.

Last week, cmonthehammers; 3 mile plus race I was trading. Odds moved into 12's to 8's in'running early on. I took a lay while playing two other horses in the race. It faded well off the pace. I took a touch at 20's but was still red if it came in but it continued to drift well out of the top 3 if not 5. Played two others, trading over the race till sitting with a green screen and a nice profit on the day.....except when the commentator, who was focused on two or three horses battling it out in the last few yards, said (and I quote) "and cmonthehammers had come rushing in from the clouds to take the race". The friggin' horse had not been mentioned for a mile (and I believe the last comment was that the jockey's feet had come out of the stirrups at a jump).

Yeah I have seen similar on many occasions. I think even if you break even over time backing at higher prices IR, it's still worth cutting your losses, even slightly. It's very good for your mind not lsoing the full whack or losing less than you should have. Also keeps the losing runs managable :-)

Cheers

Hi lpool1 - No, it is difficult to really know when the right time to place the lay is. That is the main problem in trying to attain the best price. I have no hard and fast rules as to when I lay - I generally lay early doors if they seem to be drifting. Hold tight for later if they are contracting - and wait until nearer the off if they are sub 3.5 or are favourites, as you can nearly always lay them lower than the current price. Hope that makes sense :-)

Its difficult judging the prices, especially for someone still learning like me.

I tend to make a quick note of what they are when steve has posted his list, then i usually wait until the live shows start coming thru on the net ( though they are a bit delayed)
If second show is bigger price than 1st show i try to lay then and hope it carries on drifting, if its a shortener, then ill hang on to lay lower..... just guesswork and a bit of instinct really, some i lay under s.p, others over, just have to hope it evens itself up and also hopefully over time i will get better at it.

I broke about even after comm today, but its gettin my comm rate down ;-)

I sometimes play a bit safe with prices that are on the dividing lines between the different price bands.... say something at 6.5 which is top end of 0.7% band, i might lay to the levels that apply to the 0.6% band, but as the days go by i am getting more relaxed about the liability levels :-)

Well, bit of a disappointment today with one accident. Really didn't expect Opus Maximus to go in today. Well supported from 4/1 in to 11/4 being returned at an s.p. of 3/1f so caught out in a bit of a gamble with this one.....

Just goes to show that there's such a fine line between being in profit and being in a loss position. If this one hadn't won we would have been up to the tune of about £260.

Anyway - still a profitable day finishing off with a £40 profit and with the bank on a new high.....so can't be doing too much wrong ;-)

I too started doing this at the beginning as I was always thinking of the downside and potential losses - however I now lay for the higher stake if I am near the cut off. You will get burnt sometimes but on the other hand you will collect more £££ on the winning trades.

regarding your comment of brushing up on your laying skills when trying to lay at best price - all I can say is I think it all evens itself out eventually. Big swings and roundabouts I think. Although with practice you can have a better educated guess ;-)

15/2 not quite 10/1 PIP99. Although yes, I don't mind taking them on. Especially when I lay 20 losers to 1 winner at those odds :-)

You were quick off the mark to highlight Glimmer Of Light winning there - Come on, at least admit you're laying them too. Don't try to hide it.....we all know the truth.
Anyway - I expected more coming from you, a middle aged man.....How's your son PIP??

A couple of quotes from the expert himself......if PIP99 knows it all then why should he ask:

PIP99 21 Oct 20:39
"trying trading

what staking plan would you advise 10k bank"
(10K?? £10 more like :-) )

PIP99 25 Mar 20:49
"£50 FOR THIS SYSTEM

I HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF?"

"Do Betfair accept prepaid credit cards?"

PIP99 22 Mar 15:49
does anyone use prepaid

which are the best

This say's to me that 1, he's got very very bad credit rating and 2, he has to keep putting money in to his BF account :-) says all we need to know ;-)
