Chelsea need to suffer same punishment as Derby, Reading, Portsmouth and Bolton for having dodgy owners. Obviously no one comes near to Abramovitch for what he has done supporting the pure evil that is Putin. |

I am a Spurs fan so believe me there is a part of me that wants nothing more than to see them flushed down the pan.. But Really? Roman a war criminal? Do me a favour. There is so much absolut nonsense being spoken about this war in ukraine. Instead of working to a solution to a problem that, imvho, looks to be quite solvable we are destroying ourselves. If its not household energy prices going up, petrol prices rising 5p a day in the worst bout of inflation for 30 years we are going after Roman bleeding abramovic. Oh right Bankrupting chlesea is really going to stop bombs raining down on Kiev. If this was to go to court, as it should do then it would get laughed out by mlearned friends. Most of the Russians in London are only here to get away from Putin in the first place. Some one on the radio said that hROmans company had supplied the Russian army with steel. Well how do you like that? We have been supplying arms to all manner of murderous regimes since time immemorial. Maybe we should go after Delia at Norwich cos Cherie Blair once bought one of her cookery books. I blame Biden for all this. We need Trumpy back in the white house. Pronto. Legend has it that he told Putin, half jokingly, that if he invaded Ukraine he would nuke Russia. Putin had a good laugh about it. Biden was responsible for the original fluck up in Ukraine back in 2014/15 and he has come back for more causing an even bigger sh1tstorm. fancy telling that Zelensky boy he could join NATO then abandoning him in his hour of need. Its a flaming disaster. And our answer is to nobble Roman? The man who made the EPL what it is.. What a stupid country this really is. Rant over. |

Nobody is suggesting Roman is a war criminal. Almost as bad a take as saying he made the EPL what it is. Agree with the general sentiment about the hypocrisy of the west and its media tho. Nauseating stuff and Putin has been manoeuvred into this situation by the yanks over the course of 15-30 years. Even Kissenger said it in 2014. Professor John Mearsheimer is good to listen to on the history of US involvement in Ukraine.

If ever we needed convincing this Chelsea/Abramovich development proves conclusively that football and politics are now so intertwined as to be indivisible. Only month ago this situation was unthinkable, almost inconceivable.
All megalith football clubs should take note - all are vulnerable to fundamentals in world politics. |

I have no Idea how close abramovitch is to Putin and if he agrees with is policys or views but what exactly would you do/say if in his shoes. Come out critising him, I don't think so look what happened to the Putin critic Alexei navalny and many others, you either tow the line or get taken out... what choice would you make.

I think that's a fair point and there's a degree of sympathy to be had for Roman. Only a bit though. His position is awkward. He stole all those industries off the Russian state in the late 90's and made himself a billionaire several times over. If it had stayed that way he'd just be another horrible capitalist billionaire. But Putin took control and demanded everything essentially be given to him or else. That's why he bought Chelsea. It wasn't cover for Putin; it was protection against him.
However, he has done his bidding since. Possibly against his will. But he has done it so is very much implicated and seeing as Putin essentially owns it all it's right to confiscate Chelsea as the trail eventually leads back to the Kremlin. |

I don't support or sympathise with Roman, but I don't have a problem with Chelsea fans seeing him as a good guy. I have a problem with the hypocrisy of the west and it's media vilifying him for links to Putin when the UK and US have invaded the entire middle east for the last 30 years and sold billions in arms to the Saudis so they can invade Yemen, then let them into the PL and they are considered 'good' bad guys while Putin is a 'bad' bad guy. The Saudis beheaded 81 men this weekend too.

Yep. Football has a decision to make. Clearly the fit and proper person test is an utter shambles, but if we want a sense of morality in the game and our community clubs to reflect our values, then the Saudis must be next in the firing line for their atrocities.
Can't see the government or the PL ever getting there though and it's questionable people power could force it as Newcastle fans are already well won over with their new found riches. |

I admit I went ott on the praise for RA making the EPL what it is.
apols. Legend has it that Roman bought chels after he fell in love with english football after witnessing a Man U champs League game. That would disqualify my argument, as clearly SAF would be a bigger personality in the development of the EPL. I cant help thinking that this could be the beginning of the end for the domination of the premier league. There seems to be a willingness to go after foreign owners. Newcastle and City are getting mentioned in this regard. You can see a movement developing which will curtail big spending owners. In a few years I can see the EPL becoming as worthy as the boring old Bundesliga. Our champions league clubs will be struggling to get out of the group stages. Arsenal no doubt will resume their hammerings at the hands of Bayern Munich. In the words of Adele, 'We almost had it all'. The EPL might have been challenging the NFL as the worlds richest sports league. Removing CHelsea from the equation will do nothing for competition or its reach around the world. Chels are huge in Africa because of the exploits of Drogba, Essien and lately Mendy.. And now, it will all disappear. Probably. |

The EPL being the richest football league has little to do with the petro owners, it's got more to do with the size of the TV deal. The owners of Spurs, Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool don't pump any money in. For all the cash the petro owners have pumped into their clubs, a lot of it was wasted. Getting rid of the lot of them won't be the cause of a decline in the PL. Most top PL clubs just aren't very well-run given the money they have. City and Chelsea would still have revenues sufficient to challenge at the top of Europe without their owners at this stage.
Why you think this is some general move against petro owners is strange. They are vilifying one of them only because he's got links to a guy they've suddenly decided they don't like. And it's not really to do with him invading another country as they'd have themselves all locked up and divested of assets decades ago if that were the reason. |
