Absolutely yes. Whilst still having room for improvement.
By:
Yes. But only because he is surrounded by much better players (at City). Who incidentally, must be fed up carrying him in most matches.
By:
Carrying him ? He is one of the 1st three or four on the team sheet I would have thought.
A poor finisher but top class at every other aspect of attacking play. |
By:
Without raw speed he'd be stacking shelves in Asda, Theo Walcott in the next aisle.
By:
Don't know where to find actual ratio, but attempts compared to actual goals is appalling. Better players out there for a team like city, so yes they are carrying him.
England won the match tonight, but Sterling only looked average. Even commentators protecting him. Think one said 'he only missed because a player ran in front of it'. Laughable. |
By:
Agree with that Scand. lol
By:
Tober. Did you have that right. Did you not mean 1st three or four on the bench. lol
By:
There was one moment when he cut in from the right hand side onto his left hand side and had a clear chance to take shot on goal with his left foot, only he didn't because he doesn't have a left foot at all, saw Delph having a go at him afterwards for not doing so. You have to wonder, if Sterling was not already at City by the time Pep got there, would Pep have ever of signed him?
I think it's ridiculous that players at that level are very one footed, I know the greatest were like Maradona and Pele, but they could afford to be, if you're not at that level you need to at least compensate by being able to shoot with both feet at professional level. Seen it so often when players don't take a shot on with their 'wrong foot'. |
By:
If Pep didn't rate him he would have left with Joe Hart.
As it is he is one of the 3 or 4 least likely to be left out for the biggest games. |
By:
A poor man's sturridge, would be on the bench if still at liver
By:
Didn't say Pep didn't rate him, but would he have bought him if he wasn't there, as he was there and he's young he kept him, has made him better/more efficient, but he's not a special player the way Silva or De Bruyne is, he's in the team as his main attribute is pace, wonder if pep would have even thought about him if he wasn't there or got someone else.
By:
He has many attributes. Very good close control and his movement to lose defenders and be available for passes is as good as it gets.
Everything except finishing really, and that is the least important thing to City because they create so many clear chances. |
By:
Better since he left Liverpool = Yes
Finished Product = No ![]() |
By:
think that's why pep keeps him, he's good for the others rather than the others being good for him, don't think he's a natural footballer though.
By:
lovely player..danger every time he gets a touch.
By:
Sterling is like some modern day Frank Spencer.
Pratfalls everywhere he goes. the other week he falls flat on his face, nobody touched him and he wins a penalty! When have you ever seen that before? |
By:
pace is everything to him
still got it electric on his day |
By:
probably Englands best player. IF he was foreign he would be rated far more highly
By:
englands best player? not in same league as kane , a player who scores more and makes things happen
By:
I can never work out whether the disregard for Sterling's ability stems from unacknowledged racism or just downright thickness. If you can't see how important a player he is for City and England you should really take up watching another sport.

The problem with sterling is he is just a bit of a berk.
Clearly he is very good at his job but the litany of pratfalls which have accompanied his career thus far is ridiculous. Just this year alone he was late off his holiday for the world cup. In which he turned up with a gun tattoo on his leg. Which was apparently supposed to be anti violence in some way. And the misses. Jeepers. I have never seen anyone miss so many open goals. I mean, he almost single handedly won the derby for United back in april. He just comes across as one of those people who walks between the rain drops without getting wet. Head in the clouds. Always comes up smelling of roses out of the manure pit. In answer to the OP i have seen little change in sterling since his move from LFC. Even Guardiola has said he can still improve. This is his 7th season in the EPL btw. Thing is, you just dont know when one of those hideous misses is going to rear its head again. THe law of averages says it will be in a pretty big game. For city in the champions league or england in a semi final.... Yuu have been warned |
By:
Skill is one thing, effectiveness is another. There are so many players who have amazing ball skills but little tactical sense and Sterling is one of those.
By:
knew it wouldn't be too long before someone brought the racism card, today's it's jed.
By:
I'm quite happy to accept that people generally do not know what they are looking at when it comes to football. Maybe that is the reason why Sterling is not appreciated, although there is of course also the added complication that he has upset arguably the most sensitive, whiney and loud footballing constituency in the country, namely Liverpool fans.
By:
Wonderful player
By:
Porcupine moves in swiftly to quickly confirm he is indeed, not a sensitive, whiney and loud mouth Liverpool fan

LOL you obviously don't read the Politics forum. Or Chit-chat.
By:
Think he left a bit of a bad taste in how he left, but then it's hypocritical for fans of big clubs to moan when we're doing exactly the same thing. As a player though, I love him to bits. Skilful, fast, really brave. If he could improve his finishing he'd be on joining the top tier.
By:
I think he has a great football brain.
Always gets himself into the right places and mostly with an important yard of space to spare. This isn't through pace, as he mainly gets the ball to feet. Never hides or drifts into anonymity for periods, unlike many strikers. Watched him live at Wembley earlier this year, against Italy, and he was sensational off the ball. |
By:
* In answer to OP..... Yes
By:
He's clearly a better player since he left Liverpool. He does an excellent job for City. Guardiola trusts him and that says a lot particularly with the options City have. Still don't think he performs very often for England, Spain away being an obvious exception. Rashford was different class to Sterling yesterday. I'd prefer Sterling coming from the bench for England.
By:
think he offers a lot more than people realize-his pace and ability scares defenders
obviously has high profile misses but as some have alluded to he doesnt go missing and he puts in a lot of effort |
By:
It's ridiculous to say he's one of the first 3 or 4 names on the team sheet.
Ederson because the 2nd choice is no where near his level. De Bruyne when fit is irreplaceable. David Silva is nailed on. Aguero is clear first choice over Jesus. Whereas Sterling is interchangable, you could replace him with Mahrez or Sane/play them out wide. De Bruyne and Silva have no real pace but are there for their footballing brain/technical ability, if they had pace they'd be even better. Sterling has pace and that's his main asset, if he never had pace he'd be nowhere near the team though Pep has obv improved him I honestly don't think he'd have signed him, never made any attempt when he was with Bayern and they had ageing wingers. I think he is a good player but once he reaches that age when his pace goes around 30 he'll probably be playing for mid table clubs. Don't think he could ever be classed as World Class. Btw, it's stupid people boo him for England, think they can only be Liverpool fans. |

He’s not a footballer , he never was and never will be it’s impossible

By:
now that time recently when he tripped and fell on his face , that wasn’t an accident
That was inevitable , he’s clumsy , inept , it’s like watching someone cack handed going about their work using their wrong hand He simply hasn’t even got close to mastering the basics |
By:
Of course he's a better player. But when he left Liverpool he was a very young man and improvement was inevitable.
Still a long way short of world class however. |
By:
Well he plays for the Premier League Champions and the World Cup Semi Finalists so your criteria for "World Class" must be quite tight.
By:
what did he do at the World Cup, apart from be apart of a team that lost 3 out of 7 matches
