Just over evens for the win tonight. That looks skinny to me.

The 64% would include matches against the likes of Qarabag and Dundalk and league cup ties. He barely missed a league game before the start of last season. Been useless since then. Not just about playing him up the middle tho is it? The team is relatively toothless in attack and doesn't seem interested in scoring at all a lot of the time once they go a goal up. You can put anyone you want up top playing like that and they'll get the hump after a couple of years of it.

Fair point re the stats.

2 good wins and 2 winnable games to come. Then we have City. I'll wait to see how that goes before i get carried away. No more false dawns please Arsenal.
|
|
By:
Yeah 2 good wins. Martinelli has made some difference both going forward and winning the ball back high up. Saka looks back to his best too - didn't think he looked sharp this season until the last few matches. Having those two in form gets a lot more out of Laca and Odegaard too. Tomiyasu and Ramsdale are great additions and, without getting carried away you'd have to say we have a good chance at 4th now looking at the other contenders, how many points we picked up after Xmas last season and not having euro football. West Ham and Leeds were both poor tho and I think we'd still be dominated and well beaten by the likes of City or Liverpool.
Xhaka has looked good, I still think he's a liability but he's a step up from the midfield alternatives. Very suspicious betting patterns in the card market for him last night and then you look at the booking he got? Looks very dodgy. Wonder what will happen with Auba now in Jan? He's well down the pecking order so might want to leave more now. Maybe a CL club will take a punt on him on loan at least and pay some of his wages or some sort of loan swap for another player. Still unlikely imo. |
|
By:
Not a fan of Xhaka at all. Has a useful left foot but nothing else imo.
We've been waiting for Martinelli to get a run in the side for ages now. If Auba hadn't fecked up, not sure he would have had a start in the last 2 games? |

The United winning goal a case in point. Already booked. Not sure how long left but he lets the attacker through even gets out of his way to avoid being booked again and sent off. The player goes through and United score the winner! If he knows how to avoid booking how come he gets booked so often? Didn't get booked for a stamp at Leeds was on Sky News today. I think he was already booked but he stamped a bloke on the half way line where there was no danger the game already won but jumps away from a tackle with your nearest rival who go on to score and win the game! Something not right with that. I saw Xhaka for Switzerland and he is a good player for them, integral and influential but at Arsenal he is not. I don't know why. He is too slow, makes terrible tackles and doesn't make tackles when he should and often his positional play is awful and he is missing when the the breaches are being overrun making himself as useful as a chocolate teapot. What is even worse is he is playing a little better this season! The right back is pretty decent but I don't think good enough or tough enough long term. That Chelsea fellow takes no prisoners. How I would want a couple of those type of players at Arsenal. Too many with mangina's, too used to taking and not giving it! Arsenal still do not have a leader. Tierney is the obvious choice. I think players would rally around his leadership but there is no Beast or Big Dog at Arsenal still. Far too nice. Good Boys, not men. |
|
By:
He didn't play against United. Everton was his first game back. Is that the game you mean? I thought he should have been replaced as he was on a yellow, hadn't played in over 2 months and we were getting overrun in midfield for about 20 mins before that once Gomez came on for them. He had Lokonga and Elneny on the bench but didn't use them despite us sitting back for most of the second half?? Instead he replaced Tierney with Tavares and he cost us the first goal. Should have won that game and the substitutions made no sense.
|
|
By:
Apologies Everton. Booked after 63 minutes but did not make the foul or even tackle that lead to the winner
|
|
By:
Congrats to Arsenal, took a lot to turn that 1:0 around for City. Xhaka what a fecking liability (thread on him says it all).
|
|
By:
That was a much better performance against a team in form who played as well as they were allowed to. Played the right way against them and it was working. Should have had a penalty in the first half too.
But once again a moment of stupidity from Mr. Liability undoes all the hard work. Idiotic from Gabriel too, both cards were and if Martinelli had scored that chance for 2-1, Gabriel wouldn't have got the second yellow. Thought we did OK down to 10 men but having Holding at CH ultimately cost us. But up to now we used to play like that with 11 men against them. Still that shows more progress for me than beating bottom half teams and I'd be more confident of getting 4th than I was before the match. If we can get an improvement on Xhaka in midfield and maybe a new striker who plays that role better than Laca (who is free to talk to other clubs now) and who can add a few goals we can make the next step. Xhaka has to be replaced tho. Fúcks up the whole game and ends up finishing it as captain. |

There have been many on this thread that have slated Arteta. I (like most) only want to see improvement and after several years of detriment I feel we have turned the corner. No European football has helped massively. I expected top 6 (and backed this too) and although I don't think we will get top 4 if we do and spend in the summer we could be a decent team

Lurka - you know im no fan of Xhaka but how come Wenger,Emery and Arteta love him?
Its been plain to see he is,and has been a liability for an awful long time now. Arteta could have sold him pre-season to Roma yet MA gives him a new contract. WTF. |
|
By:
I dunno. Wenger signed him so I can understand the loyalty there, as he was loyal to a lot of poor players over the years. Emery and Arteta maybe thought that other areas were more in need of strengthening first or that we wouldn't get enough money in to afford a better replacement when we had the chance to sell. The fact that he's left footed might be a factor too and he seems to be in every manager's good books unlike other players, they feel they can trust him.
I still think that we miss him in midfield when he's out, not because he's good but because Elneny, AMN and Lokonga (so far) are worse and he does seem to get the ball forward more than our other options. He is a top 8 maybe top 6 level midfielder at best, too slow pace and tempo wise to be better. We had loads of weakness in the midfield and defence over the last decade that needed fixing but now he is the clear stand out weakness in the first XI, so hopefully not much longer for him. |
|
By:
Emery and Arteta had to operate under a tight enough budget apart from the last window. FFP rules were relaxed because of covid, that's why we were able to spend so much after a year of lower revenues and no euro money coming in this season.
Could have replaced him instead of buying Pepe I suppose but Emery/the club obv thought a winger was more of a priority because they were going after Zaha then too and gambling on getting a CL spot. Think there might have been some dodgy dealings by Raul as part of that deal that ultimately lead to him leaving, so maybe Emery wasn't the main driver of all that? |
|
By:
Yeah think Emery was given the players coming in rather than choosing them himself.
Thought AMN could have been given a run in the team at centre mid anytime during the last 2 years. He may not be good enough but i'd like to have seen him given the chance. I like the Chelsea kid playing at Palace, Conor Gallagher. Wonder how much he would cost? Maybe Chelsea would take a part exchange for Xhaka? ![]() |

Xhaka has let us down more times than he's not. I cannot fathom out why he is still there

Disappointing result yesterday but we showed great spirit and I thought we played really well. Been a long time since the players were applauded off after a loss. Emirates is no Highbury but I really enjoyed the atmosphere yesterday.
In the cold light of day, (and watching the MOTD highlights), I think the officials got all the major calls correct. Though I suspect the Odegaard incident was a penalty, it just wasn’t clear enough and I’d be miffed if it was given against us. Echo what has been said about Xhaka. An accident waiting to happen. And what was he even doing in that position in the first place? Gabriel had a rush of blood to the head. Stupid to get booked for something so trivial for the first offence. He then sarcastically applauded 4th official Kevin Friend as he left the pitch, which I’m sure will have been logged. Lots of positives though. Martinelli improving by the game, but really needs to learn how to finish. Saka’s got his mojo back. Best game I’ve seen Partey play. Pleased for the boss after all the, often unwarranted, criticism. Lots of comment on the ether and from ‘fans’ who never actually go. I’ve never felt that in the stadium he was severely under pressure tbf. Most of us who go regularly know it’s a long haul. |

By:
Bruno Guimaraes of Lyon has been linked a lot the last few years and touted as an ideal replacement for and improvement on Xhaka. Think he'd be well affordable too.
|
|
By:
There's still a lot of stupid comments about Xhaka, he was having a good game. He might have given away the penalty but he was covering a defender who went missing.
100% dive ,it looked like he had rigor mortis before he hit the floor. I'd agree about Partey as well. The first stand out performance i've seen so far. Martinelli should get more game time especially in this type of game, combative, energetic and gives you a target when breaking out. I'd still get rid of Arteta, he's only keeping the seat warm for Vieira in my book. |
|
By:
I would have chosen Viera when Arteta got it.
But Viera has no chance now as he supported that 'Kroenke Out' thing last year. |
|
By:
Think that much of the Xhaka comments are justified. He can be terrific, helping move the ball forward quickly, but overall lacks discipline and just makes too many errors in important areas of the pitch. As one of the ‘leaders’ in the group, it’s not unreasonable to expect him to set an example to the many younger players we have.
The window to ditch Arteta has now closed. It would be a bizarre thing to do now. If it was going to happen, it would have have been done at the end of last season or after the first three games of this. As for Vieira, it would be an emotional and, dare I say, knee-jerk appointment. I’d prefer to assess him at the end of the season. Yes, he’s an absolute legend at AFC, but his previous managerial posts haven’t been great. |

Having watched the MOTD analysis tend to agree with you. Xhaka was covering, still bad technique to try and tackle like that though. Gabriel's block was stupid although Milner did a similar block yesterday in a much more dangerous area (free kick given) and didn't get booked. Still Arsenal put in a great performance compared to another rubbish performance by Spurs. I hope players go into the London Derby knowing they are a better team. ANC going to rob us of five players, Spurs no players in ANC? |
|
By:
Just to get this straight. Xhaka is a DM, so covering at the back is part of his job. It was a def pen for City. Xhaka pretended to get out of the way, but body checked the City player. No decent ref would be conned by Xhakas attemted 'tackle'.
Versus Everton, he did very similar but the Everton player just brushed him aside, and Everton went downfield and scored the winner. If you are gonna tackle then phuckin tackle. Dont ****foot around like a big tart. He tackles on his backside way too often. Gets booked way too often. Plays way too often when he shouldn't be allowed inside the ground, let alone on the pitch. |
|
By:
Blackrock take a look at the stats https://www.premierleague.com/players/12136/Granit-Xhaka/stats .
I'd agree he gets a few too many bookings but that goes with the job but any mistakes are outweighed by what he does do right. As he wins 64% of tackles you'd struggle to find someone who wins more, let alone in our squad. In the Everton he was already on a booking, their player was 65 yards from goal and we had 3 covering defenders, 5 when they scored from outside the box. |
|
By:
and yet they did!
He jumped out of the way! A skilled operator would have made sure he went down while trying to make it look like an accident. He is a decent player particularly for Switzerland but he is too slow and many times his reading if the situation is calamitous. Arsenal need something better in that position. Partey is a good player as you just saw but has not been playing well. He will start to add to the team. |
|
By:
Ell - i don't really take too much notice of stats. I prefer to form my opinion on what i see. If Xhaka could tackle properly, we would not have lost at Everton, nor would we have allowed Man City in with a cheap pen.
I know he was on a booking at Everton but he should still have made an effort to stop the Everton player. We agree he is booked too many times, which leaves him in the position of not committing to winning the ball incase he is shown red. |
|
By:
I had meant to post a Happy New Year to all my fellow Gooners, even if we don’t agree on everything. We all want the best for the club.
It’s not the busiest thread, but unlike the Spuds one, at least it isn’t populated by infantile commentary IN CAPITALS and with half witted emojis during the actual game, when we know that most grown ups are actually at the stadium. |
|
By:
Stats will show Xhaka's yellows, reds and penalties given away. But what about the time he headed a cross from the near post downwards towards the penalty spot for Nasri to feed Rice against West Ham a couple of years back or when he stopped tracking his runner against Leicester at home last season etc etc? There is a litany of examples.
Getting rid of Arteta now would be stupid. The time to do it was just before Xmas last year when we were playing our worst under him and couldn't create a chance to save our lives and all his signings looked awful. Was never going to happen after 3 games this season after backing him in the summer. Since last Xmas we picked up the second most points last season despite not playing great and this season (since Auba was binned) there has been significant improvement on the attacking side for the first time really. Last summer the signings of White, Ramsdale and Tomi have improved us loads on the defensive side. Gabriel, Odegaard and Partey are also very good additions. I've been very critical of him until recently and didn't think we were going anywhere under him, but I think a lot of that criticism was justified based on how we were playing and the signings he had made (the likes of Willian on 220kpw, Cedric, Runarsson, Mari, Ceballos, Auba on 350kpw to play left or F9). I don't think that any more and he has certainly earned more time now imo. That's the first time I've thought that or see real progress since the FA cup win. I think he's been very lucky with covid too, fans in the stadium last season would have got on his back and he wouldn't have been able to make those signings last summer were it not for covid. He'd have likely had almost nothing to spend with revenues down and no euro income this season. No way I'd replace him with Vieira now. See how the rest of the season goes but I'd expect us to be very close to top 4, mainly because Utd and Spurs don't look great. |
|
By:
I wasn’t a fan of his either. It’s bleedin’ obvious you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Some of the goals given away from a goal kick would have resulted in a flogging at certain Public Schools in the early ‘70’s ( some of you may know that is not a joke ). Don Tevie might hVe said if you look like Real Madrid you better bloody well play like Real Madrid but the clowns we had looked like clowns and not Manchester City players.
I am still not convinced with Arteta but he has better players now and his vision is shaping. It would be mad to get rid of him now. In actual fact it is time to back him with a centre forward and a central/holding midfield player of kwality. I still think we need a beast of a centre half too but priority is from the front. One think that troubles me is how the team can still get its pants taken down like they did against City. They played well as a collective of boys not men. They still lack a leader. |
|
By:
Only a few weeks ago we were desperate at a poor Everton. Again tried a tactic i hate of trying to 'manage' the game. Basically have 11 men behind the ball and pray the opposition don't score.
Since then, that attitude/style of play has been ditched by a much more positive approach and we are seeing the benefits. Has Arteta seen the light? Can't just be down to Auba not featuring? |
|
By:
Yeah it has all changed very quickly imo but still too early to assess or get carried away. The attack was still quite poor until Auba was binned and that was only a few weeks ago. We were fairly toothless up front and incredibly slow getting the ball forward for almost 2 years before that.
Spurs will improve under Conte but they don't look better than us just yet and we might improve too. Partey will be a big loss tho and talk of AMN going on loan to Roma so maybe there are plans to get midfielder in this window? That could make all the difference. |
|
By:
Aubameyang was fine until Arteta arrived. In fact we didn't have a problem scoring goals, playing out from the back just slowed everything down and doesn't play to his strengths.
I think the partnership of White & Gabriel is starting to gel and they're both willing to go forward with the ball rather then pass side to side. The changes only came about after first 3 games of the season and i reckon that was a fluke rather than planned. ESR & Martinelli should have been introduced last season. Loaning out AMN wouldn't make as he's good cover in defence & midfield, 100% grafter. |
|
By:
Goals were never a problem.
Last year Arsenal had the third best defence in the League....Really? Yes....technically Arsenal conceded the third fewest amount of goals. All this with Chelsea’s previous 5tth choice centre back and Granit Xhaka in front of him. Arteta had to shore up a poor defence and that cost Arsenal its fluent style because he stuck with the personnel initially. |
|
By:
You either play to his strengths and build the attack around him in an orthodox 9 role or else you let him leave. Don't sign him on 350k a week to play another role where he's not worth even half that. He is an out and out 9, not much more to his game than scoring. Newcastle could do with him on loan.

Back late last night after what felt like a long journey back.
Not a pretty performance but one full of commitment and courage. Much needed after the inept showing against Forest. Great support throughout. Suspect we would have lost if it was 11 v 11. Mutterings about the NLD being postponed due to a shortage of players. Hope so. Wouldn’t fancy going into that game with so many personnel issues. |

I can understand the ire of the Spuds fans. Hardly any Covid cases in our camp, though obviously severely under strength. Think the key phrase is “integrity of the game”. Surely in our respective most important game of the season, you want to see each team put out their strongest line up and may the best team win (or draw as is usually the case). I think there are a few non-Covid precedents to be fair to the authorities. If we turned up with just one substitute and an under strength team, it would be an insult to all those who have paid top dollar for tickets (myself included).
Most Spurs fans I know personally are extremely fair minded and simply want to see the best two line ups go hard against each other. |
