Tierney and Holding both starting

2 super finishes from Martinelli. Looks a bit special that kid

great to see Holding and Bellerin back, this should improve the defence no end, very least defensive options, and Tierny too! Kolasnic really is a wing back will be good to have a left back in the left back position, Bellerin also, though more suited to a wing back but much better than Maitland-niles in that position who sees himself as a centre mid. Watched Holding's road to recovery vid of Arsenal's youtube channel so especially pleased for him. Nelson MOTM imo.
I'm convinced Martinelli's second goal took a deflection off of either Nelson or the forest defender? not sure which, if the forest defender then it's his goal if not would be Nelsons. Great prospect ![]() |

I was thinking...Unai might just decide to leave at the end of the season (even if the club offer him an extension)
He might consider it job done in terms of stabilisation post Wenger and now it’s time for Freddie to take over with the kids. Anyways....line up for Old Trafford? Leno Bellerin Chambers Holding (c) Tierney Guendouzi Torreira Pepe Willock Saka Aboomerang ... By the way...Martinez has been top notch in goal...Leno needs to watch out. |
|
By:
ELG - have you been on the funny cigs?
I don't think anything we've seen from UE suggests he has stabilised the club post Wenger. We haven't beaten any team in the league worth a dollar and continue to bluff our way through games. |
|
By:
Probably should’ve added...if he gets us back into the Top4 / CL and perhaps even picks up a trophy alongside integrating all of these new players (recently purchased or academy).
The club would be open to exercising the 1 year extension clause on his contract or give him a new contract altogether but he may decide to walk and let Freddie take charge of the kids. Plenty of nice jobs back in Spain for him...even potentially the Spain role post Euros. |

Two men have been charged following an attempted robbery of Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac.
Ozil and Kolasinac were targeted in an incident on Platts Lane, Hampstead, north-west London on July 25. The Met police released a statement on Tuesday to confirm charges were brought against Ashley Smith, 30, and Jordan Northover, 26. Both men have charged with attempted robbery and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public area. Mr Smith, of Cardinals Way, north London, faces an additional charge of possession of cannabis and has been remanded in custody. He will appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Thursday October 3. Mr Northover, of West Yorkshire, is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court via video link on Wednesday. Kolasinac and Ozil missed the beginning of the Premier League season due to fears over their security after the incident, but have since returned to the side. |

As bad as it gets last night. Really poor game highlighting issues with both teams.
Each week, Manuel does a little more to convince you he's not the right man to take our club forward. It was a tired, supine, insipid performance against a team lacking in confidence. Starting with such a defensive midfield trio was like running up the white flag before the whistle had blown. The torrential rain might be a mitigating factor, but I've not seen a game with such an absence of quality for a long time. Worried that we don't have a clear identity or vision of how we want to play. And at this moment, Pepe does look like a bit of a Dud. Strange times in the Premiership. The top two are in a league of their own and everyone else is shifting relentlessly down towards championship level. |

Petit slating Xhaka on French TV and said he can't understand how he has the armband. All Emery has done is slightly slowed the rate of decline in Wenger's last year or two. He has to go. We need a manager whose first transfer business is to get rid of the likes of Xhaka and a few defenders and sign some decent defenders and organise them. It's as simple as that and if he doesn't do that he won't be good enough either.
Sick and tired of hearing Xhaka decsribed as a defensive midfielder as well. Listening to Keane was a lot more entertaining than the match. |

Agree with everything The Fink Sisters said. I'd be surprised if either team were top 4 at the end of the season. Pepe has to be the worst £70m player I've ever seen, almost like playing with ten men when he starts, it doesn't make any sense that he looks so bad. The goal we conceded was pathetic as usual, Sokratis didn't get close enough and Xhaka ducked out of the way of it whilst taking an age to get into position.
I don't see any progress from late Wenger era, defence if anything looks worse and they've spent big money on players. |

We seemed to abandon that ridiculous tactic of playing out from our own penalty box, at least that was a positive. But Utd and ourselves looked 2 poor sides and a top 4 finish for either is going to be difficult.
Thought David Luiz was our best player by far last night. Maybe UE will pair him up with Holding, hopefully passing on his experience to the young lad. Sokratis not really good enough for us imo, but then again that can be said of 1/2 others. I find it hard to see the green shoots of recovery and a method of play that will improve the side substancially. Emery to me looks like a 'guesser'and unsure of the way forward. |

Agree with others. Poor game. On the positive side 77saka looks as if he can hold his own in the premiership as can 28JW. 21CC will do ok once manuel realises he is a central holding midfield player . Not convinced by 19PEPE whatsoever but i will reserve judgement ( early days ) Xhaka as captain is a joke, Ozil is not in managers plans whatsoever.
If all players are fit then i would suggest the best line up would be as follows. 1. Leno. 3. Tierney. 16. Holding. 23. Luiz 2. Bellerin. 21. Chambers. 29. Guendouzi ( CAPT ) 28. Willock. 14. Aubameyang 9. Lacazette 77. Sako. Those that got close were 8. Ceballos and 35. Martinelli |
|
By:
The method behind the selections as follows :
I doubt there is much between Leno and Martinez and i would be happy with either so maybe Martinez should have made the short list ???? Tierney looks a quality signing at left back . He will do well i hope. Luiz and Holding mainly for the benefit of Holding who will hopefully cheery pick the good parts of Luiz to take forward. Bellerin is a good player at right back and hopefully he will improve this season now fit again. Chambers is underated. He will do well in the role i have given him. Love Guendouzi. He is the future of this club imo. Has everything including passion and desire. Willock as he is defo improving week on week. Just needs a run in the side. Sako is streets ahead of the other young attackers. Needs to be kept in the side. Laca and Auba pick themselves. Now that team would be a match for many i think. |

You know... we could’ve finished the game with 10 men (9.5 if you count Chambers who limped home bravely)
One problem last night was that every time they flood forward we lost at least 1 runner...more often the attacker most central to the goal. In the build up to the goal Lingard got loose but Xhaka dragged him to the floor and then carried on into the penalty area all sheepish and guilty looking. Same old Xhaka...losing his runner....he does that EVERY GAME. Heard so many theories about him...he’s a false No8, he’s more attacking, he’s like Xabi Alonso and only responsible for quick balls in the centre All I know is Gwen needs a Vieira / Gilberto type next to him...possibly Luiz or Chambers when Holding fully returns. Maybe even Maitland. *Possibly...just a theory...all I know is it’s not Xhaka. Not sure what’s going on with Torreira....maybe a touch sulky he couldn’t go to Milan. .... |

Nicols Pepe admitted he was struggling for confidence, even before last night’s woeful performance against Manchester United. Much was expected of the Ivory Coast international after Arsenal beat the likes of Napoli to his services and shattered their transfer record by agreeing to pay £72million over the course of his five-year contract. Pepe has endured a difficult start to his Premier League career, however, scoring just once, a penalty against Aston Villa, from his eight appearances so far. The left-footed winger conceded possession on 17 occasions at Old Trafford and was taken off with 16 minutes remaining, replaced by youngster Reiss Nelson. ‘[My start] It’s not been easy, we must tell the truth,’ Pepe told RMC ahead of last night’s fixture. Unai Emery speaks after Manchester United Draw Play Video Loaded: 0% 0:00Progress: 0% PlayMute Current Time 0:00 / Duration Time 6:24 Fullscreen ‘I’m not good enough in my stats or my usual form, it’s not the same as in Lille or during the Liverpool match early in the season. ‘The confidence must come back. I am not very worried. People may be worried about statistics, but I’m not. ‘I have to keep working because the level is different, so is the language. It’s a new championship for me. I have to adapt quickly but it will not be long.’

Pepe needs to be benched for his own good. Coming on after 65/70 mins will give him the opportunity to run at tired players and get an assist or two and maybe a goal or two, gain confidence from that and kick on.

People comparing his slow start to Bergkamp and Henry have got it wrong. With Bergkamp, despite his initial lack of goals he oozed class and all the fans could see it was only a matter of time - it was the press that were on his back and it was certainly not the Arsenal fans. Henry was introduced slowly and playing on the left wing, it was less obvious with him but again, it was clear to see he was one hell of an athlete and there was something there - again I don't remember the Arsenal fans being unduly worried. Pepe has shown absolutely nothing! Even after the Liverpool game (generally considered the only game that he's got involved in) I was disappointed with his final ball and rotten finishing despite the pundits saying they liked what they saw. He needs to improve a lot, I'm not saying he won't but I am concerned!

The back 4 last night was a massive improvement on the usual so-called first team back 4.
Tierney, bellerin and Holding would be my choice, and willock instead of Xhaka |

the so-called kids have won 3-0 away to frankfurt, 5-0 at home to forest and last nights 4-0

Cue the hapless Xhaxa, plus Kolasinac back for Sunday.....

There is nil logic to Xhaka's inclusion. Slow, cumbersome, doesn't track runners (and too slow to stay with them if he did), gives the ball away far too much, costs us goals, slows our game down and can't tackle for sh"t.
Not only do we have alternatives but they offer so much more than Xhaka. Pace, mobility, dynamism, goals, passing, engines, tackling and fit into a quick style of play. Torreira, Ceballos, Guendouzi and Willock, to name but 4, should all be way ahead of Xhaka in the pecking order so how he is first on the team sheet is baffling. Emery is putting his job on the line with this call- it would be fantastic surprise to see Xhaka dropped tomorrow but I won't hold my breath. |
|
By:
My theory on Xhaka is that Emery wants to sell him, so he has to play him every week to give him market value, hence why he's also made him captain, he's also Swiss Captain, if he benched him every week they'd get nowhere near the 35 mil they paid, he'll be sold at a loss anyway but but think someone could pay at least £15-20 mil to recoup some of it back. Ozil is a different situation because regardless of how much he does or doesn't pay, he's on 350k a week til end of 2021 season and nobody is going to anywhere near that bar China, and don't think he'd want to go there. Xhaka knows there's no love there from the Arsenal fans and I think that's affected his confidence, he's been poor for a long while but he's still a lot better than what he's shown the past year.
On Martinelli, was rejected by Man United on trial, looks like a real clanger as he's seems top quality technically they panned to Auba's face on the bench when he scored one of his goals v Liege, you could see Auba was thinking, wow this kid is good, not that he needs to worry about his place! My prediction on the defence is that cleans sheets are now around the corner, now have 9 decent prem fixtures til City at home mid December - with Tierney, Holding and Bellerin all back and Leno who's never really put a foot wrong. Stablility is the key, Maitland niles was never a right back and didn't enjoy playing there, Kola is really a wing back. Very surprised to see some people saying that want Emery out, he should have his full 2 seasons then judge him from there, needs that time to get all his players he wants in and all the one's he doesn't out, remit this season is top 4 which looks as achievable as it has done in years, Spur's, United look very poor and Chelsea I don't think look strong enough to be shoe in, 3rd would be a good season and should be the aim. Then with CL football back can attract even better players and more money to spend with Saliba to come in...and the kids are alright too. Lots to be positive about imo and way to early to even think about changing manager. |

The young lads are putting the older players to shame. Time to parachute them in and let them light up the premiership

Can't agree that Emery continues to play Xhaka in order to find a buyer. Emerys treatment of Ozil is baffling. MO can at least open up defences and if he was to get the 'arm around the shoulder'technique of managing from Emery, Ozil may at least provide something we don't have at the club.
Emery's job will be decided if we are Top 4 or not. Hanging his hat on Xhaka is a risky bet indeed. Regards the kids - we can only introduce them bit by bit and let them get used to the PL. It's ok doing the biz against Forest and Liege, but don't think it would help Martinelli for example if he was given an extended run in the team and was kicked up and down the pitch by some prem CH's. Gradually is the way forward imo. |

Arsenal team to play Bournemouth: Leno, Chambers, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac, Guendouzi, Xhaka (C), Pepe, Ceballos, Saka, Aubameyang

Good half. Bournemouth are woeful. Hardly any space up front for Arsenal to exploit but pressing high and it seems to work. Xhaka tragic . So many unnecessary fouls
|
|
By:
Bournemouth so much better in 2nd half. Only 1 shot on target though. Got the 3points. Important to not throw that away. Chambers played well. Luis and Kolo defended well, Average performances other than that.
|
|
By:
clean sheet and a win, in 3rd place and 1 pt behind city into the second international break, would have taken that the start of the season!
52% possession v Bournemouth though at home needs to be looked at, and I think Torreira should start every game, ball needs to be passed around quicker, other than some good fixtures for the next two months. |
|
By:
90mins for Xhaka again. Ceballos looked very disappointed to be subbed but he did look a little weary. Torreira; comes on 1 nil up with 10 to play and there he is on the edge of their box momemnts later and spent most of his time facing his own goal. We have a much better squad than the teams we are up against imo but Emery really doesn't look like he will/can get the best out of them atm. There will be no excuses from here on in for him with a full squad available to him. If they stay fit and Xhaka is dropped top 4 ought to be a shoe-in.

Difficult not to get away from the conclusion that we are third due to a lack of quality in the league rather than through great play of our own. We're still stuttering and were a bit lucky yesterday. Clearly lots of room for improvement, which I suppose is a good thing.
I'd echo the thoughts on here about the midfield, particularly Xhaka. There must be a more dynamic, forward thinking combination among the players he has at his disposal. Smart move holding Tierney back from international duty. Be good to see our first choice left and right backs in situ after the break. Always worried when we talk about a run of 'good' fixtures. We're capable of losing to anyone in the league, especially away from home. |
|
By:
I agree with the above post. Disappointing second half performance, plus points was Chambers played well again, nice to see Martinelli come on as a sub and Pepe was a little bit better.
|
|
By:
disappointing 1-0 loss, didn't understand team selection, Tierney and Holding are fit now they should be starting, Torreira on the bench for Xhaka again as well, least 3 of the next 4 prem games are at home, Palace next, Zaha will probably treat it as an audition and play better than usual

I'm 60/40 he should go. Emery just is not learning from his own mistakes and cannot get anywhere near the best out of the players he has. He won't go of course so let's hope he hears all the flack that's coming his way and starts making the calls he has been unable to so far. Shockingly inept performance tonight from the players but it would help if Emery stopped hamstringing the team with HIS poor decisions.
|
|
By:
With Edu and Raul directing things, I can only see them extending Emery's deal if they can't get a better manager in this Summer. They should be putting the feelers out now. They can't be impressed with him and he is reflecting badly on the jobs they are there to do.

Enough is Enough. This really is shockingly turgid stuff. He's had more than enough time.

I love Emerys passion, but he's team selections baffle me.

Aubameyang has bailed this guy out countless times. The performances are worse than the league table suggests and that won't keep up. I don't believe Ozil is finished, he is a unique type of player that you have to accommodate in your side by putting grafters in behind him. He should be played as a No.10 or free role and not asked to defend but to always be available for a pass when we win the ball back. Asking Ozil to defend is a complete waste of his talents. If he wasn't the best assist merchant in Europe or if we weren't stuck with him on huge wages he wouldn't be worth it but I think he has a lot to offer in a properly balanced side that allows him to stay high up the pitch. He played most of his Arsenal career behind Giroud, an immobile striker who was facing him most of the time and not making runs. Now he has Aubameyang and Lac and Emery gets rid?
Bin Xhaka and accomodate Ozil in the side. It is ridiculous that guys like Willock and Saka are playing in advanced roles and Ozil on 350k a week is not even in the squad. That should really be a sackable offence right there. Complete waste of money. |
