Lots of injuries so lots of excuses but Leno can't have any excuses. Watching that, and it's astonishing we had managed to go on an unbeaten 22 match run.
|
|

Lots of injuries (Kolasinac was another big hit as was Bellerin then getting taken off) sure but too many square pegs/round holes in the side. Emery must take the flak as well as the praise that has rightly come his way - he got it very badly wrong. It didn't help of course that PEA could, probably should have had at least 2 goals (one of which should have put us 1-0 up and changed the game from the outset).

We were due a bad day as we have been getting the rub of the green lately. Kos or Nacho wouldn't have been anywhere near the team if we had a full complement of CH's available.

I don't think I've ever been less concerned about the outcome of a North London Derby.
The last thing we actually need is another two matches, particularly if against City or Chelsea. |
|
By:
Wonder what team he'll put out tonight, esp at the back. Can't afford even one minor injury there so I think we are short on that basis alone.

Jesus, i remember going to the Lane for the second leg of the League Cup against Tottenham praying for a win. No one gives a feck about this competition now.
How times have changed. |

i remember that Blackrock,i was there, went 1-0 down then Allinson and Rocky got the winners.
a great night at the lane, or should i say,ANOTHER GREAT night at the lane |

By:
when we went 1-0 down, we were actually 2-0 down because we lost 1-0 at home, and went through on the away goals

Remember Ian Allinson scoring but don't remember Rockys goal. Meant everything to get into that final. Not one of our best squads tbh at that time. Niall Quinn up front.

Tottenham will rest several first team regulars for the first leg . The fear is that if they were to actually win something it would raise expectations ![]() |

One benefit of having a CM at CH ought to be passing ability. Xhaka has proved yet again that is not the case when he is there. Not good enough it is that simple.
Iwobi shocking again. I have often said there is a player in there but he seems now to be hiding away for too long to justify his place in the team; maybe even match day squad. That aside the team played pretty poorly all round. I have watched a lot of the training sessions and they must be edited greatly because we seem to bury the same chance after chance in training that we miss time after time in games. Lacc, PEA & Mhiky missed clear cut chances again today. If Emery has learned these lessons tonight will have been no bad thing in the long run. I really feel for Niles; shunted all over the place for 2 years now but not where he deserves to play - in CM in place of Xhaka. |
|
By:
Niles fractured his leg in the first game of the season v City, he's played 16 mins in the PL since and started 2 or 3 games in the LC or EL where we play our second string and he hasn't played CM in any of them. He is not match fit to start any big game and you think he should be starting at CM? Are you related to the guy or something? Serious question?
He has never played well enough in any position to justify starting in the league for Arsenal |
|
By:
Serious question really ?
If you look again I mentioned 2 years. I made no mention of playing him immediately but have been consistent for at least a year he is better than GX and ME. Diaby ran the show, in CM, away to an otherwise rampant Liverpool but I recall the abuse he got when he was shunted to right sided midfield. So whether Niles has impressed you or not as a right footed LB or an out of position right back is of no obvious evidence as to his ability to improve upon Xhaka, in any position you care to name not least LB where we can compare. Equally whether he has played well enough to start at all is at least a fairish point. However I would point out the obviously limitation and chances the likes of Xhaka and Elneny have had and even by a process of elimination he deserves a chance at his TRUE POSITION. |

I thought Xhaka played pretty well last night, gave the ball away once in a dangerous position but apart from that was probably our best player.
|
|
By:
My goodness pixie : he have the ball away several times - inexplicably, more than once. It just goes to show how we all see the same game differently. Xhaka is a big problem for the team and I am baffled why we have stuck by him when he isn't sorting out the basic art of passing consistently.

I've been very critical of Xhaka for a good while now but thought he was our best player last night. Hit some great balls.
I know Ainsley has been injured but he was truly shocking. He couldn't control the ball or pass it. He ran down blind alleys. If he is to be a viable CM he has to have some kind of touch/skill on the ball. Mickey missing that chance could have made the difference. Tottenham did have more poise than us but i was pleased with the way we battled till the end. Would have thrown the towel in in the past. We need additions to the squad but we all know that. |
|
By:
I guess it's all about opinions and I've made mine abundantly clear on Xhaka. Niles has been misused for 2 years - ever since his man of the match (CM) away to Man U in fact.
|
|
By:
I agree with you, Blackrock, I didn't feel we were particularly outplayed either. Mikhitarian needs to improve his finishing if he's ever going to reach the top, he's missed some very easy chances for us this season that you would expect a top level player to score from - other than that I think he's looking a better player now than before but the jury is still very much out with him from me.
Ainsley obviously had a shocker last night, as we all agree, being played out of position doesn't help and all players occasionally have stinkers. As fans, we just have to hope that they don't lose their confidence, continue to try things and eventually play themselves back into form. We seem to have more than usual, a number of players with huge promise, that we have no idea if they can train on and become superstars or find their level quite a bit below - it'll be interesting to see how Ainsley, Guendouzi, Smith-Rowe, Holding, Nketiah, Saka and Nelson turn out. I would expect Ainsley to be near the top of the pile but I don't think you can ever really know, Wilshere has disappointed a few amongst many others. |
|
By:
Some fair points pixie- one question - pause for thought; how do you think Jack would have faired as a full back ?
|
|
By:
"we just have to hope that they don't lose their confidence"
The worry for me is that Emery has used Niles in the positions he has because Wenger did it before him and if it keeps being the case his confidence will be destroyed particularly with some fans pointing out his 'poor form' in ways that are not constuctive. |
|
By:
I'm sure Emery will play AMN in midfield if he thinks he warrants it. He hasn't been frightened to drop Ozil, and Matteo has had quiet a few games which must have been unexpected pre-season.
Maybe Emery thinks Ainsley could make a wingback [bit like Victor Moses did for Chelsea]. The manager has been forced to put square pegs in round holes due to injuries. Still think we need another 2 summer transfer windows for Emery to get the squad he would like. |
|
By:
He chose to put the square pegs in. It didn't work and the 2 times he's done it were an advert for not doing it. It also didn't work when Wenger did it and it wasn't amusing to hear supporters suggest last night had echoes of last season.
Several wingers such as Moses have converted to WB's but not many CM I can think of have even tried it. Until he is given games in his position, Emery will never know. Why isn't he ahead of Ramsey (as he's leaving), Elneny (very limited though he tries and fights). He showed in a cameo last night that he is strong on the ball; he shrugged off 2/3 hard challenges on him and kept the ball in close control and then layed it off to a team mate. The potential is there and the sooner we give the young man a chance the sooner we will benefit. |
|
By:
when the games come thick and fast and you guys are asked to play top teams (not Europa micky mouse teams) every 3 days for a period of time, by god you wilt, get injured and run out of steam.
See wasn't Wenger fault, it's happening under Emery at the same point of the season. Don't worry 4 weeks ago you was title challengers and top 4 certs, now your one month away from your usual...…...Sack him, get rid and total fed up rants on Arsenal TV. Fickle and enjoy the DVD of your cup final |

enpassant you said Niles deserves to play in CM in place of Xhaka. I asked you whether you were for real saying that? There are at least 5 players in the squad who deserve to start at CM ahead of him. He is not match fit, he can't be, and he is not at the level he was at previously due to being out for most of the season.
I am not highlighting his poor form and it's not a question of whether he has impressed me at right back, I am saying the guy needs a lot of time and a lot of games but to say he 'deserves' to play CM is nonsense. He is miles away from that and way down the pecking order to play there. He has gone backwards this season due to a broken leg. |
|
By:
Let's give each other the benefit of the doubt before things deteriorate here. I am simply saying when he is ready he deserves an opportunity to play in his rightful position as opposed to being used as a utility player - it is my opinion he is better than that and has the potential to be a regular in the side. It is also simply my opinion, Xhaka is not good enough.

Have the wheels come off ?
The xmas fixtures will give us a bigger clue. |
|
By:
I don't think so. We clearly need a transfer window or two to bolster the squad but we are an improved team in comparison to several recent seasons. The list of injured players and tiredness are problems in the short term. Things could have been very different (result-wise at least)in the past week if we had taken a few of the clear cut chances we missed.

Taking one of my daughters to her first game today so hoping for an early goal to make Burnley open up and then we ought to be able to get a comfortable win. Cannot afford drawing/losing at ht with this obdurate lot.

Hope she enjoyed it enpassant.
Christmas is here and I have to say I’m pleased. After losing our first two league games we’ve been very good. Losing at Southampton wasn’t great but other than that you have to say we’ve got about as much as we possibly could, points wise, from our games. A shame we couldn’t beat Man Utd as they were there for the taking. We’re still miles away defensively. We always look dodgy and likely to concede chances. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool put 3/4 past us. All in all you have to credit Emery. Once he’s bought a couple of defenders we’ll be a much more balanced side. Merry Christmas to you all. Up the Arse. |
|
By:
Thank you and yes she has a good day all round. We got to see ourselves on the Arsenal.com site 'cos the ball came right at us from a height and I managed to connect a straight right with it and sent it up and long !
I thought Burn;ey were a thuggish side and that Sokratis was superb in several 'bouts' and also his leadership qualities. We are on the up but will have a few blips along the way, not unlike every team thus far , except Liverpool but if we can get to them with some energy and zip left we can cause them plenty of problems. Merry Christmas to one and all. |
|
By:
Well what a shambles that was. Liverpool would have put five past them in the first 30 minutes...
Why do we always look why we’re completely incapable of keeping a clean sheet, even against the dross? |
