I'm not a Liverpool fan Milan, but they remain a very big and prestigious club.  A financial balls up cost them top four status and it will take time to repair the damage.

People can mock Liverpool all they like but i'd guess that worldwide they're seen as one of the worlds top 10 biggest clubs and therefore would be considered as one of the top jobs in club football.

okay, here's my initial thoughts.

firstly, what can we learn from the francona appointment, since that worked out so well for them in a situation with some parallels?

one thing stands out. francona wasn't a hotshot up and coming manager. he'd actually failed in his one previous top line job at the phillies. this makes me think they'll be willing to appoint someone who impresses them even if their recent record's not great. so AVB has a chance.

also, francona was working as an assistant coach when they got him. so don't rule out steve clarke as an outside bet.

martinez as favourite, I just don't get.

yes, he's a top guy, yes he's done well at wigan overall. but as someone else said, they were the worst team in the league for over half a season. FSG's previous experience of appointing someone permanently on the strength of a couple of months good performances is... kenny dalglish. look how that turned out.

all that said, I like bielsa, pardew and ancelotti as long odds fun bets.

Seven successive seasons in the champions league until 2010. Then the Hicks/Gillett regime fell apart.

Do you have an alternative explanation?

Martinez is certainly flavour of the month, but dont understand people dismissing him. He has done an excellent job at Wigan. It is not just about results, look at how they have played their football

why not pardew?

probably gonna see a lot of his team sold from underneath him this summer, and may well think the only way is down at newcastle.

and FSG may well be thinking, this is the guy who spend a fraction of the money we gave him for carroll on papiss cisse.

^was Cisse anything to do with Pardew? Genuine question I dont know.

Who are these sources dylan, eh?
By:

well, alan carr's dad (Laugh) will  have had something to do with it, but cisse was a known quantity at the time, so you have to assume pardew can at least plausibly take some of the credit.

the other thing in pardew's favour is, the team he's built at newcastle, apart from being more successful than liverpool and assembled with their money, is so the opposite of what dalglish did at liverpool.

ie based on bargain non-white, continental players with a hefty dose of black african fast twitch muscle fibre at its core.

and my gut feeling is FSG will want to move as far from the failed KD model as they can.

Hate getting involved in these markets but Martinez is a lay.

What is the KD model? I didnt know he had a model at all.

The problem for any continental passing style managers coming in is the squad...what do you do with Caroll and Gerrard?
By:
viva el presidente!
When: 16 May 12 19:20
well, the KD "model" is probably doing it more justice than it deserves. but basically, expensive white british players.

when it came to the transfer market, KD was partyin' like it was 1989.

I'm sorry that Kenny has gone but I understand why Fenway have made the decision. Football has moved on the decade plus since Daglish last managed. Daglish's signings haven't worked, Downings not quick enough, Adam is a decent ball player - but his all round game and lack of athleticism mean he's not up to scratch for Liverpool, Henderson while athletic is bereft of confidence - but I think he could improve but I would have doubts about whether he is good enough technically, Carroll has shown some promise towards the end of the season and I think he could be a good squad player - although I question whether he's the right man to play with Suarez.
Fenway couldn't trust Daglish to spend any amount of money on players, his ability to sign players who would forward the club has been discredited. I thought Commoli had been made the scapegoat for Daglish's signings and Daaglish would stay - but I've been proved wrong.
With regards the appointment of the next manager, I would be happy with the appointment of Martinez, he's a young manager with a firm belief in playing passing football. Martinez stuck to his guns last season even when on long losing runs, and ultimately his belief in playing passing football paid off. I also think that Pardew (if he wanted it with Newcastle doing so well), Rogers and Lambert may be good choices. We need a different tack with appointing a manager this time and maybe a young manager will be a good thing.

What is the manager going to do with all that English tat Queen Kenny bought? Sell them off cheap? I'll p!ss myself if they get Martinez - one of the biggest myths in football who nearly gets Wigan relegated every season. "Poor" little Wigan who get £40 million Sky money every season.

Capello would be a decent choice for them. He could get them top 4 with that team given his previous...anyone else and I wouldn't fancy their chances.

wonder why martinez took so long to figure out his formation?

id say it was more luck than managerial ability....probably saw napoli use it and thought "ill give that a try"....BINGO

just for anyone who's forgotten, here's wigan's position after the first three quarters of the season:
