Weekend Picks

22 Jan 13 15:00
Three bets for us this weekend, so let’s get cracking.

First up we have the +2.5 bet:

19/01/2013 - 5pm    Real Sociedad vs FC Barcelona +4 3-2
19/01/2013 - 5pm    Besiktas v Istanbul +7.5 2-2
20/01/2013 - 1pm    Bastia v Rennes +7.5 0-2 (B'stard bastia missed a pen with 5 to go, Rennes had one cleared off the line with 2 to go)

The Sociedad and Barcelona match doesn’t really fit into the criteria for an over 2.5 bet with a +4 rating. However, I’m letting that slide seeing as every Barcelona away game this season has seen over 2.5 goals. Add that to the fact that Barça have only kept two clean sheets in 10 away matches and the +2.5 looks a solid.

Besiktas host Istanbul on Saturday evening with goals expected at the İnönü Stadium. Of the nine games played there, seven have seen over 2.5 goals and you have to go back to October to find the last time that didn’t happen. Whilst Istanbul’s away record isn’t so great, three of their last four away games have ended up over 2.5 Goals.

It’s unusual for a French game to feature in the overs category but that’s definitely the call as Bastia entertains Rennes on Sunday Afternoon. Rather surprisingly every Bastia home game this season (10) has seen over 2.5 goals whilst Rennes away record stands at 60%.

The treble pays just over 7/2 with Paddypower and Bet365.

Goals Galore:

5/8 - 8/9    19/01/2013 - 2.30pm    Werder Bremen vs Dortmund +8 0-5
10/13 - 8/13    19/01/2013 - 3pm    Peterborough  v Hull City +7 1-1
9/13 - 11/13    19/01/2013 - 3pm    Crystal Palace vs Bolton +6 0-0
7/9 - 6/9    19/01/2013 - 5.30pm    Hoffenheim vs Mönchengladbach +8 0-0

Die Borussen travel to Die Werderaner in the first league game after the winters break and given their respective records, one expects both teams to bag in this match. Stat Attack time: Werder Bremen has scored at least one goal in each of their last 11 matches. Werder Bremen has conceded at least one goal in each of their last 9 matches. Dortmund has scored at least one goal in each of their last 7 matches. Dortmund has conceded at least one goal in each of their last 7 matches. Dortmund has scored at least one goal in 100% of their away matches. Both teams to score bitte.

Peterborough are regulars in the BTTS bet having featured thrice and winning for us twice. Their record needs no explanation. Hull are eight from 13 in BTTS stats. Whilst their last game ended 0-0, you have to go back till October and some seven games prior to find the last time that didn’t happen.

Bolton score and concede for fun, ditto Palace. I can’t see no reason why that won’t be the case at Selhurst Park this Saturday.

Finally we have Hoffenheim vs Mönchengladbach. Stat attack time: Hoffenheim has conceded at least one goal in each of their last 11 matches. Hoffenheim has conceded at least one goal in 89% of their home matches. Mönchengladbach has scored at least one goal in each of their last 9 matches and have conceded in eight of their 9 away matches.

The four fold pays 6/1+ with StanJames.

Score/Win Treble.

League leaders Lyon play relegation battlers Evian TG on Friday night and should be a shoe in for the win. They have conceded nine goals in their last three away games and are up against Lyon who has scored an average of 2.3 goals per home match. With Gomis in fine onion bagging form and their main penalty taker, he is the pick for the score/win.

Third plays fifth in The Championship as Leicester host Middlesbrough. ‘Boro are in poor form on their travels at the moment with just one win in six and that was against Peterborough.  Leicester, after the signing of Chris Wood, has been banging them in for fun and has scored an impressive 10 goals in their last 3 matches, with Wood claiming six of them. With Wood in such fine form it pays to side with him.

Finally we have Watford vs Huddersfield. The terriers are in terrible form on their travels with just 1 away win in their last 8 games and just one win in their last 13. Watford can blow hot or cold at home but given the opposition I expect them to blow hot and blowing hotter to be Czech striker Matěj Vydra. With six goals in his last four starts, he knows the way to put the ball into the onion bag and against a team that has conceded six goals last time out, I except him to bag at least one.

The score/treble pays just under 15/1 with PaddyPower.

Africa Cup of Nations.

Algeria has been given a tough group but at 14/1 they can be risked. They won’t play favourites Ivory Coast until their last group game so hopefully will have qualification already wrapped up. As they are in the sane group as Ivory Coast they wouldn’t then meet them until the finals. With the each way terms being ½ of the odds, we’d get 7/1 for just reaching the final.

They have two strikers in Islam Slimani and El Arbi Hillel Soudani who have seemingly taken to international football and they are 40/1 and 66/1 respectively to be top onion bagger. Where normally 3/4 goals will do, and if they go far, it gives us a run for our money.

A more speculative bet is 250/1 double with Ladbrokes on Algeria winning the tournament and the two above players being top onion baggers.

Small stakes on the above is advised.

Women’s Australian Open 2013.

The first slam of the year rolls into Melbourne and many pretty and not so pretty ladies are eyeing lifting the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

With Williams and the world No. 1 Azarenka on the same side of the draw, one needs to focus their attention on the opposite side to find a bit of value and I think have just done that. Step Forward Li Na.

In the last three years her form reads R16 / RU / Semi Finalist. In those years she lost agaisnt Kim Clijsters twice and Serena Williams. She should have really won the final in 2011 but didn’t take the chances when presented.

Sitting at number six in the world she has missed the two big hitters and should have an easy enough passage to the latter rounds where she should meet Kerber and most probably Sharapova.

If she does play Kerber then she will go into that match with confidence having beaten her in their last four encounters on Hard and boasts an impressive 6-1 record against her German opponent.

This is where it gets tough. Should the seeding’s go to plan then it’s a semi-final match against Sharapova. Her record against her on Hard isn’t great (1-6) but what we do have on our side is that Maria is coming into this match with no warm up matches after pulling out of the Brisbane International citing a collarbone injury. Any weakness will be punished by her previous competitors and more importantly by Na herself.

Currently trading at 22/1 (and that's falling fast) to take the title that to me is a massive price. Back her e/w and should she get to the final we have a 11/1 pay-out before she even starts.

Li Na to win the Women’s Australian Open @ 22/1

A few bets this weekend to get our teeth stuck into so let’s start with the +/- 2.5 Goals acca. The double last week came in with little fuss and hopefully we can have the same result this week.

11/01/2013 - 6pm    Saint-Etienne  vs Toulouse -10 2-2
13/01/2013 - 8pm    Malaga vs Barcelona +7 1-3
14/01/2013 - 5.30pm    Kerkyra vs Asteras -7.5 0-1

14/01/2013 - 8pm    QPR vs Tottenham +6 * 0-0

*Hit and miss with the over/unders this weekend. Cant believe four goals were scored in France*

Friday night see’s Saint-Etienne take on Toulouse under the floodlights at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard and under 2.5 goals is the call for this match. So far this season this has happened in seven of the 10 Les Verts home matches and in eight out of nine Toulouse away matches. In fact, Toulouse has only managed eight goals on their travels. Factor into the equation that Saint-Etienne hasn’t scored their last five matches and the unders call looks a solid pick.

88.9% of Malaga’s home matches have ended up with over 2.5 goals being scored. The last time this didn’t happen was the first match of the season back on 25th August. This week they play Barcelona, who has a habit of putting the ball into the onion bag. Every away game this season has seen over 2.5 goals. Gol! Gol! Gol!

Asteras travel to Corfu to take on Kerkyra on Monday evening. Kerkyra currently sit bottom of the Super League with a whopping seven goals scored. I would be wary of including a bottom of the league team in an under 2.5 bet but their visitors aren’t renowned onion baggers on their travels. Asteras have scored just three goals in eight away matches and in those matches under 2.5 goals has occurred in 87.5% of their games.

Finally we have QPR and Spurs. London derby matches can be hard to predict but with every Spurs game away from White Hart Lane this season ending up over 2.5 goals, one can be quietly confident that this will be the outcome come 10 bells on Monday Night.

The 4 fold pays a touch over 5/1 with BetVictor.

Goals Galore.

10/12 - 6/13    12/01/2013 - 3pm    Stevenage vs Doncaster +7 1-2
8/11 - 9/11    12/01/2013 - 3pm    Lincoln City vs Newport +7 2-4
6/9 - 7/9    13/01/2013 - 2pm    Udinese vs Fiorentina +6 3-1

8/13 - 8/13    13/01/2013 - 3pm    Carlisle Utd vs Coventry City +7 1-0

*One Coventry goal away...*

Stevenage has conceded at least one goal in 92% of their home matches. Stevenage has also scored at least one goal in 92% of their home matches. Doncaster scored at least one goal in 92% of their away matches. Both teams to score? I should bloody well think so.

Carlisle and Coventry boast a BTTS record of 8/13 in their respective home and away games.  In Carlisle’s last seven home matches, both teams have bagged in six times. Coventry City has scored at least one goal in 85% of their away matches. Cumbria should be seeing goals on Saturday.

Udinese have seen both teams’ score in six of their nine home matches. Udinese has conceded, on average, just over one goal a game at home, whilst bagging 16 goals in the process. The Viola has managed to bag in every away game so far this season and both teams have scored in seven of their nine away encounters. Hopefully this will be the case come Sunday afternoon at the Stadio Friuli.

Lincoln has conceded at least one goal in 85% of their home matches and has scored at least one goal in 92% of their home matches. Newport has conceded at least one goal in 91% of their away matches and has scored at least one goal in 91% of their away matches. Goals for both teams are on the Menu this Sunday.

The 4 fold is currently just under 15/2 with StanJames

A few singles for the weekend as well.

We will take Saint-Etienne to beat Toulouse to nil this Friday evening. When Saint-Etienne win at home it’s to nil (5/9) and when Toulouse away from home, it’s to nil (5/9). The single pays 9/4 with Ladbrokes.

Lille has drawn 50% of their away games and in those 10 matches, 1-1 has been the score line on four occasions. They are playing a Nancy side that have drawn four out of their last six home matches, the score on each occasion being 1-1. The 1-1 correct score line is currently 6/1 with WilliamHill and that’s more than fair.

*It did end up a draw 2-2 *sad face*

Doncaster currently lies second in League 1 and travel to Stevenage this weekend boasting the league’s best away record.  Of the 23 goals they have scored away from home, 30% of them have been within the first 15 minutes. Nearly a fifth of the goals Stevenage has conceded at home have also come within the first 15 minutes. With that in mind, the 9/2 with WilliamHill for time of first away goal being with 0-15 minutes is worth a dabble.

Looking deeper into the time of first away goal market and one can see that BetVictor go 9/4 that the first away goal is scored up to 27th minute. Given that 47% of Doncaster’s away goals have come within that time frame, it makes it a worthwhile back up should the above no occur.

*thumbs down*

*now Saturday 12-45pm

A strange day on New Year’s Day as there was a distinct lack of goals all around the country. In fact, looking at the results, there were clean sheets in 25 of the 43 fixtures played that day. Oddmans.

This week we have a double, a treble and a 5 fold.

First up is the -/+ 2.5 double.

5/01/2013 - 3pm    Levante vs Athletic Bilbao +6 3-1
5/01/2013 - 7pm    Deportivo vs Malaga -7.5 1-0

Levante entertain Bilbao and goals are expected to reign in Spain *groan*.  In their respective home/away matches, six out of the eight fixtures has seen over 2.5 goals come in and there’s no reason why this won’t be the case on Saturday.

Staying in Spain, Deportivo de La Coruña host Malaga at the Riazor and the pick for this match is under 2.5 goals. In the eight games ‘not so super anymore’ Depor have played at home, six have seen fewer than 2.5 goals. Malaga are also six from eight in their away matches this season, ergo unders is the call.

The double pays just under 3/1 with 188bet

Next we have the Both Teams to Score bet.

10/13 - 8/11    5/01/2013 - 3pm    Peterborough v Norwich +8
6/13 - 8/12    5/01/2013 - 3pm    Rochdale v Wimbledon +7

7/9 - 6/9    6/01/2013 - 7.45pm    Napoli v Roma +6

The Posh play Norwich in the FA Cup and one thing we can expect with both of these teams is goals galore. The last five matches have seen Norwich score & concede whilst the last six matches at the London Road Stadium have seen both teams bag.

Looking at Rochdale’s home record, six out of 13 games ending up with both teams bagging isn’t that appealing. Look a bit closer however and you will see that the last five home matches have ended up this way. Indeed, in their last 11 matches both teams have managed to put the ball in the back of the onion bag. Wimbledon, despite being bobbins, still boasts a 66% strike rate. They come into this fresh from beating Torquay on Tuesday.  Goals are expected.

The Partenopei take on Roma on Sunday night in what should be a lively affair. Roma are the league’s top scorers with 42 so far, 19 of them coming in their 9 away games. That works out as an average 2.1 goals.  Napoli at home has seen seven out of their nine matches end up with both teams scoring. You have to go back to October to see the last time that didn’t happen at Stadio San Paolo.

The treble pays a smidge under 5/2 with StanJames

Put them all into one bet and it pays a handsome 12.3/1 with StanJames

Score Some Goals with Your Boots

Two out of four bets landed last week, which is nice.

This weekend we have a straight acca and a BTTS bet.

We’ll start with the latter....

Dartford 8/12 v Cambridge 10/12 +6

St Johnstone – 7/9 v Inverness -8/9 -  +6

QP Rangers – 7/9 v Liverpool 7/9 +7

Everton – 8/9 v Chelsea 6/9 - +7

First up, Dartford v Cambridge. I’ll level with you; I know bog all about these teams and am working on stats alone. Dartford has seen eight out of their 12 home matches finish with both teams bagging. Cambridge has a great record of 10 in 12.

The Saints are seven from nine at home whilst Inverness has an even better record of eight in nine. Add that to the fact that they are the SPL’s leading onion baggers and one would expect goals in Perth this Saturday.

QPR Host Liverpool with both showing a seven out of nine record for BTTS. There hasn’t been a clean sheet kept at Loftus Road for either team since September. Couple that with Liverpool’s ability to both score and concede, makes this one for the shortlist.

Finally we have Everton v Chelsea. In the nine matches played this season at Goodison, eight have seen BTTS. Chelsea’s record is only six in nine but they are currently banging them in AOTS in recent weeks.

The 4fold pays 6.2 with Bet365

The treble this week is Tottenham, Sheffield United and Cheltenham.

Spurs come into this match after bumming  Aston Villa 4-0 and are taken to beat Sunderland. Granted Sunderland beat city last time out but I reckon that match will have taken its toll on the Wearsiders, so Spurs get the nod.

Sheffield United play Hartlepool, Nuff said.

Cheltenham take on bottom of the league Bristol Rovers. Again, Nuff said.

The tidy treble pays a shade under 4/1 with Coral

The draw for Europa League knock out phase has now taken place, so let’s have a look if we can find anything else to add to our Anzhi selection.

Speaking of Anzhi, they have been drawn against Hannover, who are currently sitting in mid table in the Bundesliga. They should navigate those German waters and that would leave them with a last 16 fixture against either Newcastle or Metalist. I have no qualms about them facing either of those two.

So, the draw. I was sweet on Lyon’s chances coming into this but they have been drawn against Spurs and if they get through that, it’s either Inter or Cluj. That’s four tough matches to get through, so one has to pass.

What you want is a team who have an easyish draw to begin with, a relatively straight forward Round 16 match and I think we have found us exactly that, step forward Napoli. They face Czech side Plzeň who shouldn’t be too much of a problem and then it’s either BATE or Fenerbache, two teams are not a patch on Napoli. Given the ease of their draw, it’s somewhat surprising that their odds haven’t been slashed more than 18/1 that’s offer (with BlueSq) to lift the Europa League Trophy in Amsterdam.

They are more than double the price of Atlético Madrid and that doesn’t seem right to me. Granted Atlético have Falcao in their ranks but Napoli have Cavani upfront who is equally as deadly in front of goal. In fact, at the time of writing this piece, Cavani has scored more goals so far this season than the Colombian. With ½ odds being given for just getting to the final, I’m siding with the Partenopei.

Napoli @ 18/1 BlueSq.

On a slightly different note, if you're into Golf betting have you heard about www.golfbettingsystem.co.uk ? if not, pull up a chair, grab a brew and let me talk to your ears about them.

These kind gentlefolk give you all the information for the upcoming events such as, past form at the course over the years, current form, predictor models and first round leader stats. Basically, all the information you need to make an informed decision when picking a golf swinger to take less hits of his bat than everyone else, in order to win some dodgy looking trophy and a novelty oversized cheque. Oh and its freemans. Zilch. Nada. Nishmans. And they don’t do too shabby on their tips as well…

Paul Williams deals with the European Tour and was a tidy up a tidy + 41.2 Points for last season. Whilst over on the PGA TOUR ‘bash the bookies Bamford’ as nobody else calls him apart from me, was a whopping +245.6 Points in front for the year.

Not only do they do all that but they also run a ‘punters league’ weekly tournament as well. Each week you pick 3 golf swingers and depending on how they do, you can win a weekly prize of £25 and there’s a £250 overall prize up for grabs. To enter you just need to post your selections on their Facebook page, where you will meet a variety of internet oddballs but don’t worry they don’t all bite (just don’t say you like Lee Westwood – awkward). Sign up, join in and meet the gang…

Score Some Goals with Your Boots

Another weekend of frustration, a-bloody-gain. Despite 16 goals finding their way into various onion bags, Mallorca’s inability to bag one sunk the acca. That’s four times this season where we’ve been one goal away from collecting. *sad face*

Anyhow…this week we have:

6/8 - 8/8    22/12/12 - 2pm    AS Roma vs AC Milan +7 4-2
8/11 - 10/11    22/12/12 - 3pm    Peterborough vs Bolton +8 5-4
8/11 - 9/11    22/12/12 - 3pm    Scunthorpe vs Carlisle Utd +7 pp
6/8 - 5/8    22/12/12 - 7pm    Bastia vs Nancy +8 4-2

With scunthorpe being PP, it took the bet down to a treble which duly obliged. Which is nice

Milan have cropped up in this blog before when they took on Napoli, that game finishing 2-2. As we can see, goals have been scored and conceded in every away game this season. They travel to Roma who are top goal scorers in Serie A top goal scorers. Goals will reign down in Rome.

From Rome we move onto Peterborough. The Posh, however useless they are, seem to manage to score even though they normally get beat. Bolton has an impressive BTTS record with 10 out of 11 away matches ending up this way.

Scunthorpe have seen over 70% of their home encounters finish up with both teams scoring, whereas it’s over 80% in Carlisle’s away matches.

Finally we take in France where Bastia hosts Nancy. Both teams languish towards to the bottom of Ligue 1 yet both seem to have the ability to find the back of the net. Nancy’s record of five in eight doesn’t look good on paper but their last four matches have seen BTTS. Whilst you have to go all the way back to September to find the last time both teams didn’t bag at the Stade Armand Cesari.

The acca pays a smidge over 11/2 with StanJames

Making a rare appearance this week is the +2.5 acca. We have three picks and they are

23/12/2012 - 3.30pm    VVV vs Roda JC +7.5 2-4
23/12/2012 - 5pm    Besiktas  vs Kayserispor +6 3-1
23/12/2012 - 5pm    Fenerbahce vs Karabukspor +6.75 1-3

Goals AOTS treble landed

Only once this season has there been under 2.5 goals at VVV and that was when I picked them a few weeks back. Roda have seen this happen in six out of eight away matches.

It’s a case of flip reverse the above stats as Besiktas are six from eight whereas Kayserispor are seven from eight.

The final match see’s Fenerbahce take on Karabukspor at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium and both teams come into this game with seven out of eight home/away fixtures ending over +2.5 goals.

This tidy treble pays a shade under 7/2 with Bet365

We also have a team acca this week in the shape of

Atletico Madrid -1.5 AHCP

Juventus
Betis

A solid treble is surprisingly sunk *sad face*

Atletico have managed to win by two clear goals in five of their eight home matches. In fact, in their last three home games there have been 12 goals scored with none conceded. They play a Celta Vigo side who have the second worst away record in La Liga this season. The -1 bet looks a solid option but for a bit better odds we’ll play on the Asian Handicap at -1.5. Seeing as we need Atletico to win by two, we can get 43/40 for the AHCP rather the 5/6 on offer for -1.

Juventus travel to Cagliari with Conte now back on the La Vecchia Signora’s bench. Cagliari have only taken eight points at home all season and I can’t see this being added to on Saturday. Juventus have six wins in eight on their travels and that should be seven in nine come Saturday evening.

Betis host Mallorca on Sunday and are taken to take all three points. They have already beaten Real Madrid and Valencia at home and came close to being only the second team this season to take points from Barcelona. Mallorca are worse than dreadful at the moment. They have managed a paltry two points in their last eleven matches and just three out of a possible 24 points away from home.

The treble pays a touch under 4/1 with Bet365

In a single we have Lorient to beat Reims to nil. Reims are in terrible form. They have managed just four points out of their last 10 matches and in that time have lost to nil five times, all of them being away from home.

In stark contrast to them we have Lorient, who currently sit fourth in the league. They have won their last four matches to nil and in the eight matches they have won this season, six have been to zip. Lorient to win to Nil is 11/8 with Paddypower.

Burn in hell Lorient

Something for the weekend

19 Dec 12 14:26
Frustration last week, notably with the European acca in which, despite there being six goals in the match, was let down by not so Super Depor’s inability to bag a goal. *shakes fist*

This week we have one four fold to entertain us this weekend

5/7 - 5/8    15/12/12 - 3pm    QPR vs Fulham +6 - 2-1
4/7 - 5/7    15/12/12 - 5pm    Mallorca vs Athletic Bilbao +7 0-1
4/8 - 7/8    15/12/12 - 3pm    Dundee Utd vs Inverness +7 4-4
6/8 - 7/8    16/12/12 - 2.30pm    Hoffenheim vs Dortmund +7 1-3

As we can see, QPR & Fulham matches have a tendency to see both teams scoring and that’s set to continue this weekend.

In Spain Mallorca have only seen four out of seven home matches end up with both teams finding the net. However, three out of the last four have seen this result come in and Bilbao seem to score and concede for fun.

Over in Scotland, like Mallorca, The Terrors don’t have a particular inspiring home record in regards to both teams finding the back of the onion bag with their boots. But when you dig a bit further we can see that in the last four home matches, both teams have managed to find the onion bag. Couple that with Inverness’s away record and they find the shortlist.

Finally we move onto Germany where Hoffenheim entertain Dortmund. Looking at the Stats alone this screams BTTS. You have to go back to September to find the last time this didn’t happen at the Rhein-Neckar Arena and despite Dortmund’s impressive European campaign; they have only managed to keep four clean sheets in the league this season.

The four fold pays a tidy 7.68 with StanJames
