Love Cav turning it back to 2009. I thought the Merckx record was going to be well out of his reach but just five more to go now and the outstanding sprinter in this Tour. Will he stay to Paris though?

Just in. 29 man break

Don't think the rest of the break can be too happy that Van Avermaet is in there, as no way the peleton (Sky/ Movistar) are going to give him to much rope to add to his overall lead.

STAGE 7 from L’Isle-Jourdain
To Lac de Payolle Length 162.5km Category Mountains Impact on GC 4/5 L’Isle-Jourdain is in rugby-mad Gers. Two famous players come from the town, Jean-Claude Skrela and Patrick Tobacco. It’s another Tour first-timer, but a very pretty place set in rolling hills, which provide today’s first obstacles as the race heads into the Pyrenees. They could provide plenty of springboards for attacks, as the peloton heads west then south to enter the Aure valley. This is the prelude to the Col d’Aspin, and is a steady drag rather than the undulations faced so far. It should give the teams chance to gain control of the race. After 21 kilometres in the valley, the riders reach the tall grey houses of Arreau and do a sharp right turn, then they are on the Aspin. Now the gloves will be off, so to speak, this part of the stage should be fascinating. Over the summit of the climb you might just catch sight of a giant quarry. This is where the green marble used to build the Palace of Versailles and l’Opera in Paris was extracted. It’s not far from here to the finish at Lac de Payolle, which is another first timer in the Tour de France. The early part of this stage is conducive to a breakaway move getting clear. Depending on how much lead it has by the time it enters the Aure valley, the break could stay away until the end. It’s a good day then for a climber to infiltrate a break and go for the King of the Mountains points on top of the Aspin, then keep going to the finish. There could well be two separate races today, one for the stage and one behind between the overall favourites. Although you would consider the stage not to suit overall leader Greg Van Avermaet, the BMC man has five minutes’ advantage over second-placed Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-QuickStep). Will it be enough of a margin for Van Avermaet to cling onto the lead? Or will he gladly concede the yellow jersey, and support his team-mates Tejay Van Garderen and Richie Porte in their GC fight against Alaphilippe, Chris Froome (Sky), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Fabio Aru (Astana), Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin) and Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange)? |

Break by CUMMINGS to stage glory ?

Cummings is a proper bike rider. Hilarious that British Cycling (let's face it, Sky) won't pick him for Rio

Today is where the action starts for real for the gc guys, this is where we really see who has the form to be a contender.
The fact that tomorrows stage is possibly even harder and with a mountain top finish may dilute todays importance some what. One thing is for sure is that after tomorrow we will have a very clear picture of the gc battle. Sky will likely take it up today on the final climb not really looking for the win, just to ride a real good temp to stop attacks before they hit the downhill to the finish, Froome will probably want to be at the front or off the front as they start the descent. I think tomorrow will be the stage where Froome looks to make his big move/ go for the stage win. Though movistar may have other ideas and if they get involved with the pace on the final climb today and it turns in to a real battle we could even see Quintana and Froome going head to head today??? It could be another day for the break but id be more inclined to expect it to be a small select elite group together over the top of the peyresoude, maybe 8/10 of the top gc riders riding to the finish together. But I wouldn't have Rui Costa amongst them who seems to be favourite with a lot of books?? It will be a cracking 2 days racing to watch, sure to be some twists and surprises on the way, should be a great 2 stages to enjoy. |

By:
Have backed Purito Rodriguez ew 25/1 (4 places sb) think this stage may suit him, it will be hot, he knows the climbs well, is great descender and has a decent sprint in a finish. Obviously his price takes in to account he doesn't win very often these days as might not be as strong as he was, but this must be a stage he has looked at thinking he has a chance. Dan Martin will be another rider that will be fancying these 2 stages as he lives in Andorra now, and knows these climbs and descents very well.

Did Quintana save himself a little yesterday and let Cummings win or what ?

You can see the reasoning. BC are going with a protected rider and Cummings as good as he is isn't going to be as good as Kennaugh at protecting that one rider. Do you add him as a wildcard and hope he produces something on his own while diminishing the chances of your protected rider? Whether it's correct or not I can see both sides of the argument on that one. I suspect he'll be added if Yates is forced to pull out through injury. There really isn't any reasoning. Even Sky / BC aren't that stupid I think. It's purely political / personal |

Froome took a lot of risks on that descent for 13 seconds plus bonifications. The Quintana price has hardly lengthened at all, perhaps indicative of that fact that the market thinks Froome needs every second for later in the race.

By:
Purito 3rd and Martin 2nd so i'm happy with that! I said Froome would lead over the top but did not expect him to be quiet that aggressive!!
Thought Sky as team looked very strong today will be interesting to see if they can back that up again tomorrow when potentially they could cause even bigger gaps?? |

For someone who was average on the descent and poor in the wet when on his bike, that position over the bar was absolutely stunning from Froome! It really announces him as someone who has now finally become a complete rider with that single performance. And by now taking Yellow in such spectacular fashion he and SKY get a big boost to their aspirations for a back-to-back defence, in effect making the 23secs to Quintana look more like 46secs, I would suggest. I mean, SKY rode a faultless stage and by asserting themselves over their GC rivals and claiming Yellow on a stage which was meant to go to either a breakaway or to a brawler in a classics-style situation amongst the main peloton -- allows SKY and Froome the luxury to now dictate terms over the peloton to some extent, and when SKY ride like that they become very strong and dominant, after all they invented the SKY -- uphill -- train!
Froome will certainly need every sec, no dispute there, (although I would never look at one price in isolation to provide a broad picture) however it also heaps massive pressure onto Quintana for stage 12, where the young COL rider would've been hoping that the SHOWDOWN on VENTOUX between him and Froome would present him the foundation to better the Froome of 2013 and claim his more mature approach to the one higher step in Paris than on his two previous occassions against his nemesis. I thought Quintana had the best chance to take it to Froome this year, however I now feel that coming from behind Froome may take something we haven't seen from him before, which diminishes his claims a little. So far, it would appear that Froome has improved where many wouldn't have expected he ever could or would, and so the question must fall to Quintana and whether he can make an improvement of hos own, for if he doesn't, Froome will leave him in a cloud of dust on the Mont Ventoux moonscape. Cheers, SP |

SP what I seen today was a Man Just saying to the Rest lets go Lets see what you have ,Nairo can sit looking like He is cruising for the next 2 weeks cruising is winning nothing ,Tbh the response from the other riders was pathetic ,I had Valverde as Favourite as they Approached the Summit ,With Nairo setting it up for him ,Chris ,put his stamp on the race today ,Barring disasters ,that will be a very hard Stamp to remove ,tomorrow will be very interesting to say the least

After yesterdays antics i think the public will be out to get Froome. Now he is in the yellow jersey he is a lot easier to spot. Last year he had all sorts thrown over him, including p*ss! It's disgusting and the public should be restrained behind a rail or something. Not many other sports where the spectators are allowed to run within an inch of you, waving a flag in your face and throwing bottles of p*ss at you. Just hope he is very aware today and has his fist at the ready again to keep the morons away.

Well that was dull as dishwater , let's watch all the leading riders climb up a mountain together.
Quintana's passive approach in attempting to beat Froome is utterly baffling , he will lose time in the time trial and then no doubt attack in the last few days when the race is lost. None of the possible winners put in a burst of more than 10 seconds in trying to get clear . Iv'e watched the race for decades , but much more of this will turn me off the race. |

Could Tom Dumoulin be added to the contenders for the Mountains Classification?
|
|
By:
I don't think Quintana will lose time to Froome in the TT.
Stage 10. Sprinters are being backed here which I find baffling. The climb at the start is 22km long. The sprinters will be out the back door and even though there's a long way to go I don't think they'll get back on. The Cat 3 climb at the end probably means Etixx, Dimension Data and Lotto won't burn themselves out bringing it back together, especially with a much more likely bunch finish tomorrow. If it does come back together Sagan is a big, big favourite but I expect this goes to a break. My favourite for the stage today is Tony Gallopin at 27. He's well down on GC, will get over the climb at the start no worries and is fast enough to win from a small group or can win solo. I guess it's a bit of a lottery who gets in the break though. At smaller stakes, I've done Timmer 810, Slagter 125, Dumoulin 135, Van den Broeck 400 and Geschke 140. |
|
By:
As SKY won't want to work the whole day alone I can see them slow down the peloton enough for the sprinters to catch up after the climb. Maybe Sagan again goes into the break for scoring at the intermediate sprint.
Will cav drop out for his Rio chances soon? |
