It's almost irrelevant how many runs we have by that point. Its literally just a target time and the instructions are to score as many as possible by that time. |

Score runs! Control the situation. If it is cloudy tomorrow then he can declare if he has the runs. Madness to declare tonight when pitch is at its best today and tomorrow. |

If they happen to bat til around lunch tomorrow, they'd have at least 200 lead (probably more like 300+, given how they'll approach it) and should have enough time across eightish sessions to force a result. |

Of course, it's hard to see them making it as far as lunch, given how they'll go, but I think they bowled first knowing they'd go for as many as they can in one innings.

Lead is 100+ by the close, most ways this plays out.
Aim for around 275 and have twenty minutes at them before lunch - and not be concerned if they come up somewhere short, in going for it. No real point holding anything back, the weekend forecast has gotten worse since we began yesterday. |

I reckon the weather around has given everyone in the camp the clarity that they had last summer, and coming into the first Test of this series.
The first day, they did a version of this, spooked Aus, declared before the close and then results and performances etc conspired against their approach. Here, I think they felt they had no choice but to make this a three-day game. Bowl, hope to get them quickly then go GUNG-HO. Series gone if they leave it to the weather and that has completely freed them up. A hark back to JB going at 8+ an over several times last year. |

 Id personally have England declaring at lunch tomorrow with 200 lead Saturday is a washout but Sunday is possibly ok? Australia will be in defence mode now anyway |

Understandable they would lose some degree of the confidence in their approach when they inevitably come unstuck with this higher variance method.
It is, after all, without comparison as a Test cricket approach. They were essentially forced to embrace it fully here, in close to a freeroll. Alas, I don't expect them to beat the weather, as the forecast currently has it but IF they could somehow...it'll be super-interesting to see if they can keep the faith in an Ashes decider. |
