Cummins can't get Stokes away and market misinterprets this as shutting up shop

Declaration has cost England, 30-40 runs or so extra, plus the 12 they made that evening, different result
|

would have been a draw on that basis...

as it was Oz traded at 5.0 and above...

Worse result for Eng a draw.
Still possible to win, more attacking field, still a few overs left tonight as well. End of day no point sugar coating it, it was poor captaincy and a stupid declaration. |

it's how they play currently, if you don't like it...don't watch it would be the best advice...

i like the attacking cricket.
But that declaration was pure stupidity, and i said it the time on this thread. Ego is getting the better of Stokes. |

I agree, the irony about the declaration is that Bazball had already worked - Aus were passive with their field positions right from the first over, scared of England getting a flyer. Some comms have suggested well it's the Ashes, maybe England could've reined it in a little, and it's true - they could've milked the bowling with minimal risk for 4 an over, declared an hour before the end of play today, 600+ ahead, put the maximum number of overs into the Aus bowlers at the start of the series, forced them to bat on a wearing pitch with dodgy overheads tomorrow etc. But no, we had to have 4 overs at Aus for the sake of 'sporting theatre'. I realise that to bring about a change in mindset you need a chippy captain like Stokes, but you have to wonder how many of these decisions are driven by ego. Does he really need to prove time after time that he's not scared of the opposition or what old players think? He blew a series victory in New Zealand in the same fashion and just shrugged and said, well we're entertainers so these things happen. Will be a frustrating series if he'd rather look hard than do what the opposition would enjoy least. |

great post

England need Foakes and a couple of proper openers. A decent spinner would help, but there isn't one available.
|
|
By:
Aus were that little bit sharper at the end, probably benefited from having a tough game against India as warm up.
|
|
By:
yes another stupid decision for me was the eng v ireland match, again england declared on a big total , but why the match was over in about 3 days, should have batted and batted give the middle, lower order batting practise
|
|
By:
I know England say they are playing without pressure but they cannot afford to lose the next game or the Ashes will be gone after 2 games ..they have never won a series against the Aussies from 2 down so they will be under immense pressure from supporters if not themselves .. need to get Foakes in for the next test; bring in Wood for someone (Anderson?) & likely to need a spinner if Moeen not available but not sure who that might be
|

Disagree with all the criticism regarding that declaration , it's all hindsight but it could easily have been drawn anyway.
How can you criticise a decision that prefers to bowl at Warner at 6pm as opposed to watching Jimmy coming to the crease. Where does all this 30-40 missing runs come from , the risks they were taking at the time they could have ended the innings in the next two balls anyway. Sometimes you just have to be grateful for the great entertainment and remember you were playing the best team on the planet. Bring on the next game ![]() |

Aus were that little bit sharper at the end, probably benefited from having a tough game against India as warm up. Could have been the declaration and the Aussie bowlers being sheltered from having to bowl England out. Can't believe they never even had 400 up. Hayden today the Aussies had 50 up after 8 down from 2 players not in. Root was well in that first day, so quite possible they could have added 30-40 at least although we will never know. Declaring was just crazy. First day so loads of time left and less than 400 scored on a decent batting track. |

Fair enough mate , it's all about opinions
![]() |
|
By:
All about opinions, I hope the new fella does well but sorry taking a few wickets against Ireland means bugger all when you are thrown into the cauldron against the Aussies, also, if going with the “no spinner” route (even though I actually think ROOT is a better spinner than most people realise) have you seen the record of WOAKES at Lords? I’d also give DUCKETT a rest and a man in form is HAIN plus extra importantly he does have the temperament, he does have a bit of the “up yours” about him, the Aussies wouldn’t intimidate him.
All the best |

160/2 now after putting them in. Looked the right call, overcast, green top, couple of slip catches missed, one hard tbf.
Need to get another 3 out by close of play or we will be running uphill for the rest of the match. |

By:
Delighted with our intent and how we have scored today in difficult conditions. A lot better than last Test when I thought we were far too passive. Shout out to Tongue. The lad done good.

Seam attack been well below par considering conditions. Suppose credit has to go to the Aussie batters, Smith never looked in any trouble.

Umpiring has been pretty poor today. Cannot see why onfield umpires are needed anymore. Umpires call is a joke imo. It's either hitting or not. Everything can be done by the camera.
