All the time we have below average batting at the top of the order, we will always collapse at the start of the innings. Root should open the batting, because he virtually does that in every innings anyway. The bowlers get you back into the game and within an hour, its a wasted effort.

Question is how do you address the opening problem?
I am not sure there is a current solution but if an opening batsman doesn’t know how to leave particularly he comes from England then you hav3 a serious issue. In Aus you can even leave in length. Indians until recently did not have fast bowlers to practise against. To see them knock off a hundred run opening partnership on the High Veldt yesterday was a joy to behold. They were magnificent against an attack that included Rabada, Ngidi and a tall left handed called Marco Jansen who can also bowl 90mph. Add Nortje and that is possibly better than India and just behind Aussie in Not sure where England go from here |

be 9 defeats out of 12 for england this. yes all against difficult opposition but even so the level of basic (in)competence in the batting especially is breathtaking. don't know how silverwood or any of the batting coaches could object if they were given the old heave ho

I would see Liam Livingstone given a go with the right tutelage. He has the right application and work effic. I think he could learn the long game quite quickly.
