Broad
Woakes Archer Curran Broad leading Stokes can concentrate entirely on his batting in my opinion, use him but not a lot as his talent entirely lies with his batting and fielding Broad can lead that line well enough in my opinion |

By:
both mentally & actual cricketing decisions
By:
With Stokes alongside him it'd work
Broad isn't daft he knows the game inside out |
By:
so much of the analysis is done off the field these days, the captain doesn't really need to do as much
By:
or he can actually do sweet FA as little joe is proving
By:
captains need to be able to react to situations as they happen
not stick rigidly to plan A cooked up in the dressing room |
By:
I think the first priority should be to find a captain whose game won't suffer from the responsibility, that person clearly isnt root
By:
root is a terrible captain
cook was the same strauss was the last decent captain we had before that vaughan & nasser we're v good imo |
By:
vaughan especially
By:
Strauss led us to number 1 and victory in australia so can't argue with that
Cook was debatable, he did win in India and won us Ashes on home soil Root as managed to lose on home soil and get battered in Australia |
By:
when does 5 test start, is it wed or thurs , thx?
By:
Strauss had a great team
By:
thurs

I think the comparison between Stokes/Flintoff/Botham is ridiculous. Similar sorts of cricketers on the field maybe but all have massively different personalities. Stokes is easily the most suited to captaincy in my opinion. I think people have a misconception that he’s this feisty almost aggressive character but he’s actually very understated and grounded. Everyone in the game always goes on about how hard he works at his game. He’s easily the most professional of the 3 as well
By:
agree T3 but I've not been blinded by that
By:
Still had to be led though tom
Root would have managed to lose with that test side in my opinion |

BBC Test Match Special statistician I've been looking at teams that have gone into final day in fourth innings two down, needing over 300 to win. It has happened 42 times. The team batting last has saved 12 of those - so there is about a 28.75% chance of England saving this match. |

By:
I go back to Ray Illingworth and Mike Brearley. Good capt's they were.
![]() |
By:
to be honest nearly all the old players could have been good captains, they understood the game,
By:
Strauss was a damned “ pounder “
Cook to a degree the same without being able to think for himself Vaughan a genuine leader and good Captain |
By:
28.75% is statistical
This pitch pushes the odds against saving the game England need a good hour here. If they can survive the first hour the second is easier. |
By:
The roller wears off certainly this afternoon if not before. No demons in the pitch YET
Concentrate boys |
By:
if they survive the 1st 6 hrs the 7th gets easier

By:
Australia’s odds are crazy imo. They win this game at least 9 times out of 10
By:
WD for captain
By:
fkin stupid
By:
Be interesting to see how Lyon does. Redemption for the third test on the cards here, especially given the stick the crowd are giving him
By:
if these two post big scores will be an even bigger shock than Headingley imo!
By:
I’m shocked Roy has lasted this long Tom!
By:
Lyon has not been bowling well thank heavens
These two doing much better than could be hoped for. They must hang on in to lunch now. Ball by bal, over by over |
By:
Get to lunch and their bowlers will start straining for a wicket
ball wears and then its easier Expecting 2 wickets to fall quickly and be over though |
By:
By:
If Roy scores a century here and rescues the test match he'll be in for the next decade
By:
denly is looking too flash
By:
Denly can't be flash
We are trying to save the match ffs |
By:
he's playing like a pr1ck
By:
forget about this 380 bollox
