Root will do well to find positives here. Scrappy batting on day 5 from some but ultimately we’ll short of salvaging the draw. Had no answer for Steve Smith who essentially beat us single handedly

We have been very poor. The Aussies haven't been superb, but Smith has been on another planet, it's two over rated teams but one is starting with a 1-2 goal lead.

Can't find positives

Worst Aussie touring side in a long time, even the sides we beat from 2009-2015 were better than this lot

Afghans have drifted out to 1.21 from 1.14 at close, to take the remaining four Bangers wickets
in however many overs the weather allows them. The draw graph has spiked above 50 and back below 6s twice!

Our batting has been shocking for a long time but in this test Aus bowled us out.
Almost all of our 20 wickets were out to defensive shots.
There has definitely been more application since we were all out for 60 odd.

What a disgraceful interview by Root. No grace, no awareness, no honesty. True to form he says 'I'm proud of the boys'. Why, you lost.

Your team has been out played and yet your blind to it. Therefore the failings will continue.

As usual we will have debates about the inadequacies of the County System; the fact there is too much white ball cricket; T20 stuff; tour schedules etc
Too many of out batsmwn are not good enough at test match level but what else do we have - Bayliss is leaving to be replaced by?
Short term - Root should lose the captaincy and give a couple of young lads an opportunity at The Oval and the short tour to New Zealand
Long term - your guess is as good as mine as we seem to have tried most things - Academies in Oz etc
perhaps its as simple as waiting for a couple of decent players to suddenly announce themselves from nowhere which does occasionally happen
at the moment we have a dearth of batsmen - as for bowlers Anderson will be gone; Broad not getting younger & excepting Archer we will likely struggle for a time

Aussie might have had a better bowlin* attack but the difference was Smith

Our selections were poor to start with. How often were we 30 odd for 3.

They suffered too tibf but we did not have batsmen with application

Questions for me over

Roy
Denly
Bstard
Butler

In

Foakes
Pope

Crawley
Sibley

Apologies to Curran
Why did he not get a game?

Is this the worst aussie batting lineup to have defended the ashes in England? Minus Smith of course.

Just saying and in no particular order.......

unbelievably bad, bone-headed and stubborn selection
totally inept, absolutely clueless Captain and white ball specialist retiring coach
white ball batsmen playing red ball cricket like it's a 50 over game
not playing your best wicket keeper who has proved he can bat at Test level
too many Counties
too many Counties giving Aussies red ball practice this year
County batsmen no longer playing against top quality test bowlers in County cricket

and Steve Smith who, despite a bizarre technique, will go down as one of the all time greats

Post of the day!

It's over, move on. Nothing to see here.

Roll on The Ashes and the humiliation of Convict Nation

Oh dear WD. Why is it you always get it wrong. Think Tescos have the best loan rates at the moment. Must be more skint than Terry Ramsden.

Anyway enough of the losers on here who haven't a clue about the great game. It's a time to rejoice another Ashes urn in the hands of the greatest cricketing nation on earth. Our quicks have been quite outstanding and deserve a great deal of credit. Marnus has been a revelation and Smithy just does what Smithy does. Quite unbelievable that they picked Rabbit Roy from the get go. A mistake of huge proportions. The second coming that was Archer pmsl. Could not believe the hype this one trick pony was getting.

The scary thing is what a hiding you are going to get next time down under. Hope you stick with weasel Root who is quite clearly not a Captain.

yes and by a long way!
However, Smith has been so good this series that he's effectively played the role of 3 or 4 batsmen!

The Aussie quicks have been outstanding, completely agree with that.
Have really enjoyed watching Cummins and Hazlewood who are probably the best opening bowling combination I've seen.

If this current England team were to tour Australia it would be 5-0 or 4-0 if we could sneak a draw.

The Injuns beat them though by playing percentage cricket with the bat
Pudjy & Kholi wore them down and that allowed the middle order to take advantage of tiring bowlers

I think we'd see a different England once Root is offed as captain and Bayliss replaced with someone like Vaughan

Something needs to change before we tour Australia again because the last 2 have been absolutely pitiful and another 4-0 even 5-0 is on the cards if this stays the same

Roy, Denly, Bairstow, Buttler, Overton are just the names of the top of my head that would be gone for a start

"the scary thing is Smith is only getting better"

I highly doubt that, he'll soon be on the decline rapidly and once you take him out that side Australia are awful batting wise

Cummins et al will be constantly defending sub 200 scores as the rest just do not score

indeed extremely unlikely to continue to average 64 long term and however many scores in a row of 50 and above against england. only bradman has put up those sort of numbers for a prolonged spell

Couple of things.
Test cricket, it doesnt really matter any more does it?
The english and aussie players will pay lip service to the ashes but we all know their bread and butter is going to be white ball cricket.
Before this series 8 of the 9 last ashes series went to the home team, I believe.
Which suggests that in a long series of test matches the away team just get bored and cannot be bothered.

I should think the aussies at least made some preparation in selecting their squad. The bowling attack in particular but also replacing batsmen who were not getting the job done.
England clearly had no plan for the test series beyond expecting the aussie batting line up to fold in english conditions. In the face of a bowling attack led by two pensioners. The notion that Roy, Buttler and Bairstow are test match batsmen is laughable,

All in all its been quite enjoyable watching the aussies win.
England are probably back to where they were in the late 80s/early90s. ie In need of a major reboot. But the truth may well be that the standard of test cricket is so average around the world, does anyone really have the will to be @rsed?

The problem for the last few years has been Englands batting and there is no sign of it improving as years ago for e.g. 2005 the top 6 were regular tried and trusted batters at test match level whereas now out of the top 6 there is only 2 possibly 3 positions nailed down being Root and Stokes and possibly Burns so thats 3 positions not nailed down with the continuous cycle of failed auditions for batting in the top 6 and the fact that we have failed to score 400 in the 1st innings for so long,we need proper test match batters that bat for time taking few risks and tiring the bowlers out to capitalise later with the runs not Roots idea of this is how we play attacking cricket.
Bairstow,Butler,Stokes and Roy are all attack minded batsman and having 4 in our line up is completely the wrong balance for the test side.
