And that's the difference between England and Australia, England would have batted defensively and to the end of the day, Australia go aggressive and declare giving themselves 7 to 10 overs at them before close
We deserve to lose, but its so annoying its against a s*** Australia team |
|
By:
Why would you not use a nightwatchman more than twenty minutes before the close
when you've just lost an important wicket and can't afford to lose another one? Either you risk your key batsman all the way until stumps, or you put the NWM in and if he's dismissed before the close your key batsman goes in anyway but at least he's now got fewer overs to survive. |
|
By:
a lot of very baffling decisions been made by ed smith, bayliss and root this series. sure england are not a particularly good test side at the moment but could still have won this series with better team management
|
|
By:
A new ball just 7 overs old and already England deep in trouble.
Probably the 2 frontline batsmen you wouldn't want in at this stage are Denly and Roy. For them it's now or never. Time for them both to step forward, show some fight and save their test futures. GLA |

Root likes like he's about to go to the gallows
|

By:
I won't be wasting any of my green on England batting 90+ overs with only 8 wickets left.
|
|
By:
Root is a poor captain and that's putting it mildly.
Stokes would be my choice. As for today it's another miracle needed. |
|
By:
I don't think Stokes is the answer, he's too gung ho and he has enough on his plate.
Freddy and Beefy were dreadful captains and I think Stokes would end up the same I thought Woakes as he bowls first change and bats down the order much like Noddy Holder However he can't keep a regular place so it's a difficult one. The cupboard is bare!! |
|
By:
Relentless love for the draw this test imo. Its taken dismissing 2 of Engs best 3 batsmen for zero to get some sanity into proceedings.
The approach taken by the last 9 lemmings will be fascinating. Who is braindead enough to still try to score runs at the risk of their wicket. Who even has their bat within a foot of anything high or wide. |
|
By:
Whatever happened to the blockathon?
Just dead bat everything It's amazing how much it pisses off the bowler! |
|
By:
Trouble is too many in this team can't leave alone the deliveries that are high or wide.
They don't seem to have either the patience or mind set to play a test match innings in this sort of situation. OK for a few overs then the rush of blood to the head and their out in some ridiculous manner. On days like this we need a Boycott, Tavare or Atherton or even the mindset of all three. They batted for their lives in this sort of scenario. |

Stokes is a winner but he can't be judged as a captain in the same way as Botham can.
Botham had a chance as captain whilst Stokes is untried. I just can't see him being as bad as Root. Root needs to concentrate on his batting. The fight and will to win Stokes is infectious. Bcak to today though. Any guesses of how long it will take for the first wicket to fall. ![]() |

Root needs to concentrate on his batting
correct |
|
By:
Can’t see England getting out of this today. I got 28’s on England last match, not this time but I can say it takes one good partnership to blow the Exchange wide open but a collapso is always on the cards.
See off the new ball. The game then gets easier but as we saw yesterday facing 90mph 6ft plus fast bowlers is not easy at the best of times |
|
By:
Stokes would appear to have a better cricket brain and can do arithmetic. I would like to see him given a go if he wants it. Some thrive with responsibility, maybe he will too.
|
|
By:
makes sense to give it a go
|
|
By:
not for the oval but after that
sibley in as opening partner for burns, another obvious change woakes back in |
|
By:
curran & foakes should play also
make a decision on the underachieving undroppables bairstow, roy, buttler etc |

warnie says its important to plant the seed in the batsmen

just can't see how THIS Eng can survive the day even were there to be a cpl of decent stands
Oz bowlers too good and batsmen too poor still sport will never cease to surprise us actually think 1.25 Oz is pretty generous,of course the price will move North at times but once 2/3 wkts go u won't see a sniff of 1.10 in a hurry again |
|
By:
Only way we can get a draw is a bomb scare. Forget a victory, defensive cricket is the order of the day.
Our top order is atrocious and doesn't give Root any room to work with tactically. I prefer the captaincy to be given to somebody else but not Stokes. Wouldn't want a 'top' player to be captain as i think it takes away from their natural game. Short on ideas as who this should be. |
|
By:
the more I think about it the more Broad makes sense short term, he's 33 now so another 2 years and that's him done, he would be decent to lead the younger lads I think
And this series he's been consistent and lead the line well enough, I know he can be petulant at times but I think he gets under the skin of the oppo and that's a plus, I think the younger lot would love playing for him because of that reason as well, a bit like Kohli for India |
|
By:
Agree with Broad too! Can't believe I agree with SS!! |
|
By:
I do however think too much is made of captaincy, just pick your best team and pick a captain from it.
