That was their only exertion in that game. Enough time for bowlers to recover from four straight sessions of bowling.

Think England picking Overton because he once bowled Smith with a pink ball under floodlights.

Would have thought Curran next in line with his left arm variety and batting..was Man of the series last year against India

very odd the situation with woakes. can only think he must be carrying some sort of injury as root has gone out of his way not to bowl him throughout the series in the process overbowling archer to the point of lunacy

DT I meant the aussies lacked what they call TICKER under a light workload. Having the quality of starc to call on aint a bad thing.

As for value well I dont know what the weather will do but assuming a result Smith has a big impact. Manus has strengthened them too.

No idea what the thinking is behind Overton to be honest, he's looked average at best from his previous tests he's played

Woakes was always going to be the fall guy but didn't think it would be for Overton ffs

Lengthened the tail and added nothing to the bowling at all, he might get a bit of extra bounce the reason? means jack s*** if its from a 80mph pie merchant

Shocked by Overton's selection.

Having said that injuries have piled up on England's bowlers. Would have gone for Curran though.

No mention of Woakes being injured.

"tactical" decision to drop woakes

...where you see "tactical", replace with "retarded"

Day 1 – Wednesday 4 September
Wednesday looks largely dry, but early morning sun will give way to overcast conditions for much of the day's play, with temperatures hovering around 15C. There are some showers forecast around mid-afternoon with a 40 per cent chance of rainfall between 3.00pm and 4.00pm.

Day 2 – Thursday 5 September
Conditions look more unsettled on day two, with at least a 40 per cent chance of rainfall throughout the day's play. If it rains in the morning, when temperatures are forecast at a chilly 12C, then spectators could be in for a long wait – there is a 60 per cent chance of rain between 1.00pm and 4.00pm, and 50 per cent chance from then until close.

Day 3 – Friday 6 September
It could be a slow start to day three, too, with above 50 per cent chance of rain until 1.00pm. and further showers forecast until 4.00pm. If play can get underway, though, the sun is forecast to come out for the evening session, with temperatures even reaching 16C.

Day 4 – Saturday 7 September
Fortunately, things look drier on Saturday, although the day is set to be cloudy. The chance of rain never rises above 10 per cent throughout the day, and is generally even lower, with the mercury climbing up to 17C for the first time in the Test.

Day 5 – Sunday 8 September
If the Test runs to day five (due to the weather or otherwise) Sunday is forecast to be a similar story to Saturday. That means largely dry but overcast, with temperatures hovering between 15C and 16C.

Raining here tonight i am about 5 miles from Old Trafford , its bleak and miserable at the moment tommorows local forecast says dry at first then maybe some rain they said its going to be a bit windy so that might lessen the impact of rain , i think it might stop and start a bit over next few days but plenty of time to get a result

I dont know what's going on with Woakes either but my impression is that this is down to Root.

He has been very loathe to bowl him when it would appear to be the blindingly obvious thing to do.

You could argue that Woakes deserves his place from a batting perspective especially in this lamentable England batting lineup

When Jofra was being fast tracked to the English team, woakes came out with the 'it won't be morally fair' to the other bowlers in England comment.

I was surprised he was still playing together with jofra. Thought jofra might create more divisions in the team. Could woakes omission be a result of that? I am surprised that comment hasn't been talked about much in the media.

in that case I hope they don't alienate Woakes because it wont be long before Broad needs replacing

and they might miss his lower order runs sooner rather than later

can't help but think that the fringe players in and around the team must wonder what the hell is going on. in contrast to the one day side which is such a well oiled machine selection, management and captaincy of the test team seems so haphazard to say the least

as usual a bowler gets dropped when it's the batting that's consistently failed. bob willis will not be amused

The muddled thinking just gets worse. Butler has the gloves taken off him and is a specialist batsman at 7. Eh?

Roy they've just discovered is not an opener but apparently he's a number 4?! Sure he's a number 4 if we're 150-2 but not the usual 20-2.

The feeling is Overton can bowl all day and give Root control. If they are that concerned Woakes can't do that, you could play Curran AND Woakes, by dropping Butler.

The gamble is the're picking somone less likely to take wickets or score runs....

On what planet is Overton better than Woakes?

He's a test standard first change and the 3rd best batsmanCrazy

Lost WC final, lost most sessions to Ireland and need an unbelievable fluke just to draw level in the ashesCry

i want to back England but think i'll simply watch early doors to see if we can make early inroads into the batting lineup
