the best one day players for england hardly play any domestic red ball cricket going to the IPL as well so it's difficult to judge their suitability for test cricket that said the example of rory burns shows you're better off sticking to specialists certainly in key positions like opening the batting. it's very difficult to wing it Absolutely correct mafe! To " Master " an Art you need to experience it. At the moment Roy is not getting much experience! The commentators mentioned how many 1,000 run seasons Burns has had. It was clear to me after his first dismissal in the Ireland game Roy has big big technical problems. The selectors have doubled down like fools. Their selection policy may be the main cause of us failing to regain the Ashes. Positions 2 and 3 have cost us too much and have not allowed the middle order to do their job effectively. It is no secret Labuschagne has played so well. he has been playing red ball cricket in England while waiting for his chance. |

enormous gap between bat and pad as per. just gets castled way too many times for a top order bat

Since he moved up to open in the ODI team his test match batting has gone to sh1t
|

Poo, poor never there to drive. He gets bowled far too often and doesn't seem to be learning from it, he should take a leaf out of Burns' book how to deal with a weakness.
|
|
By:
He played a lovely check drive for 4 earlier. Thought he had learned.
No, he reverts to type, full follow through, big gate and boom. It's mental weakness. |

Well I want to see the Sibley and Crawley bat at 2 and 3. I want to see Pope come in for Bstard or Butler. You don't need a degree in the Art of the Bleedin' obvious to see where we have gone wrong. Oh and of course Foakes should have been in from the start.
So that is easy Out Roy Denly Bstard Butler In Sibley Crawley Pope Foakes Pretty unfair on young Curran, should have been picked in this match instead of Overton imho. The poor bloke has not done anything wrong. I think he should concentrate on his batting as he appears to have a fourth seamer look about him even though he is a wicket taker. Has never let England down! |

I agree with those changes, leave the others for the white ball only |

By:
Buttler trying to run himself out again. Not a test batsman
|
|
By:
Exactly what i have been advocating whisperingdeath
I would also argue, as i did when the first debate came up about the number 3 spot came out, that Stokes is the man for the job-plenty of evidence this summer that he can do it leaving precious Joe to stay at 4 love him... |

We don't look like a test team do we
Its probably how c*ap this Australia team is that this series is still 1-1 and we could rescue a draw here and take it all the way |
|
By:
I think Butler and Bstard have shown themselves good enough for Test cricket. Johnny particularly changed his stance and grip and it proved successful but maybe they need more red ball cricket. The Roy experiment was an exciting thought and tbf I was for it but very quickly realised it was a mistake and compounded by mving him down the order where he is not needed!
The young lads need to be tested. Pope deserves his chance now. He has been playing well this season. Looks pretty good when I have seen him and would be perfect as No 6 in front of Foakes and behind Stokes. |

True dat. I think last year India were unlucky with the weather. England appeared to be much stronger than they are. |

Agree with the above especially Sibley and Pope, Foakes hasn't been in the greater of form but does have a solid technique - expect there to be a lot of changes for Nz anyway.
I'd be reluctant to have Stokes any higher in the order as he's got enough on his plate with effectively being our 3rd seamer at times |
|

I agree with Stokes at 3. Reign him in as an all rounder. He’s a batsman who is capable of doing something different and getting a wicket with the ball in my mind. I don’t think he’s economical or consistent enough as a first change bowler often relieves a lot of pressure on the batsman. Having said that Root needs to have more confidence in Leach and bring him on earlier so he can rotate his pace bowlers. Either way I’d like to see Stokes bowl a bit less and save him for when we need a partnership breaking, don’t think he’s the right man for batsman who are new to the crease.

it's getting to the stage where Buttler and Bairstow should only be considered if they are keeping wicket so at least one needs dropping
Foakes is a way better keeper than either of them, and appears to be a better Test match batsman, it seems only the selectors and Joe seem to think this. Somebody said recently that the selectors can easily make a distinction between white and red ball bowlers but seem completely blind to the batsmen |
