Doesn't matter where you put Buttler, Denly and Roy because they aren't test standard

The most baffling thing of all is we thought changing the bowling would cure the problem, and we lengthened the tail to do so

And then Aus smash 500 right on cue Crazy

As i've said before what makes them great one day players is the exact same thing that makes them walking wickets in test matches...if we keep trying to force a square peg through a round hole their one day form could be going down the swanny as well

Eric - if you had to choose your players from either the T20 and One-Day squads
or from the best of the eligible County team players, who are arguably more
used to playing proper cricket, which would you choose?

We have one specialist red ball batsman and he bats in his correct position and is averaging 46 when all the other openers are averaging less than 15
Hopefully the selectors will look at that and take note!

I don’t think runs are likely to be overly relevant here. England need to bat til at least tea tomorrow to save the game and will need to bat well in the fourth innings. Can’t see Aussies forcing follow on, no matter what happens tomorrow (barring some unlikely big scoring from England), Australia will bat again, score quickly and take the game away from England. If they skittle is tomorrow morning they’ll put us in with 30/40 minutes to go before stumps. If we hold out for a bit they’ll give themselves 50/60 overs on day 5.

expect dom sibley will be opening in new zealand but they clearly didn't wanna risk a new opener in the ashes no matter how poor the other options are

Funny, we seem quite happy to seperate our one day bowlers from our test bowlers but dont seem to be able to do the same with our batsmen.

I said it before but I think the (modified) insanity quote continues to apply here

so if they continue to pick Roy* are the selectors insane if they continue to expect a different result?

*feel free to insert Buttler and/or Denly

magnificent white ball cricketers but below average red ball players

yes agree with that , they are not up to test standard

So my question stands, if anyone else wants to answer. I'll let you have Stokes and Archer
but the rest have to be T20/One-Day OR County players.

agree on sibley

& doc...roy our best batsman in the WC, had to play this series, shouldn't have opened & probably should be even lower down the order
clearly it hasn't worked (so far)

its a symptom of the modern game, picking test players off the back of white ball form

eng did it with buttler from the IPL
aus did it with warner few years ago

Warner has been told to be a good boy though

the mongrel has been removed from him, that's what made him the gritty little bas*ard he was, he was a very good player until that sandpaper incident

I wish he'd get it back because he looks a shell of a man without it

Understand selectors not making big changes during middle of series.(not matter how stupid their original selections were)
Against Nz reckon Burns, Sibley, Vince or Bairstow(as long as he doesnt sulk, Root(4),Pope, Stoakes, Foakes, Woakes/anderson, Jeffery, Broad, Leach.
Hard to nail down no3...neither ideal. Bairstows a fukin nightmare...could be the only player to play all 3 formats but he's got to come to terms with giving up the gloves and get his head str8.
Buttler, Roy, Mo....just leave them alone to do what they do best.

the best one day players for england hardly play any domestic red ball cricket going to the IPL as well so it's difficult to judge their suitability for test cricket

that said the example of rory burns shows you're better off sticking to specialists certainly in key positions like opening the batting. it's very difficult to wing it

Weather forecast for Sat/Sun looks quite good so we should get 2 full days cricket. 196 overs.

Plenty of time for a result. The new ball is due in 6 overs so this first session is going very tough for England.

It will be interesting to see if Aussies enforce the follow on if they have a choice.

I'm not sure they would.

They will just smash a few runs and let England bat out the last day.
If they get them out before lunch then they will probably try and give England 30mins before stumps

surely Eng only need to avoid follow on , and then bat out last day for the draw ?, 2,22 the draw seems high to me

Assuming Aussie bat 40 or so Eng need to survive about 60 balls per wicket.

Its quite close to a coinflip with their balls faced/batting averages. Problem is a few are out of nick. And you dont get your average batting on day 4 / 5 pitches!

eng just need to bat most of the day & get somewhere close to aus

then its a cert thai

aus will bat again even if they roll eng quick

england have to got to bat around a day and a half of these last 2 days. no chance of getting anywhere near 98 overs per day this time of year. be lucky to play beyond 7pm

Just need to bat as long as possible, if we bat to around Tea today the Aussies could potentially have the best part of 3 consecutive days bowling here - that's what we've got to be thinking about especially with back to back Test to follow. Easier said than done though!
By:
SontaranStratagem
When: 07 Sep 19 11:23
Follow on is less of an issue here now, I can Aus putting them back in if so and we'd need to bat over a day still anyway regardless

We beat the follow on with 5 wickets in hand Australia will slowly begin to give it up and conserve energy for the final test?
