Ashley,
I think you may be right but I wouldn't put it in print! My own view is that they probably were all around similar speeds but there are more speedsters now although they are not as good bowlers as they were. The big difference for me apart from featherbed pitches is that modern batsmen are better equipped to play them, not just with equipment but they have bowling machines and are used to see the ball at that speed. I can imagine in the 50's, 60's and 70's a certain amount of terror and I mean terror! I think Mitchell Starc would have caused similar problems to batsmen of any age particularly if on ropey pitches and a couple of 6ft 6 in West Indians on his team! |

If you look at footage of the Windies, Dujon and before him Murray were standing quite close at times. I still think they were 85+ though at times.
But it then became more fashionable to stand 20 yards+ back as a matter of course to every tom dick and harry. Investment and research into different loams has also quickened up pitches. I thought the Aussie quicks in the Ashes were rapid. Serious wheels. Paine was miles back taking it over his head. |

Given that I had well over 4K draw red this morning, I’ve done brilliantly through going all green before play with prices in low to mid 4s and then chased the draw on wickets to be £500 results red and £8k draw green. What a screw up. I now rather need the rain though be biblical.

This over from Mikey to Boycott in 1981 is fantastic. But look how close Murray and the slips are standing!
But then the way the stump cartwheels is special. Hardly ever see that now. Some people reckon stumps were purposely put in loosely to create that effect but I don't believe that. Not easy to do at all. https://youtu.be/loYyJllsj68 |

I thought they used to fill the holes with water to make that happen

Lots of movement, feels like its one of those pitches where it moves too much.

You have to do that anyway tom to get the stumps in. It ddoesn't make them loose though and of course the holes dry out quickly.
The off stump must have gone back 4 yards at least! Also, Murray could have stood 5 yards deeper but they chose not to in those days. |

The irritating thing is I pretty much called this situation and still messed it up. If I’d just waited for a wicket or two before cashing out my result green I could be laughing now even if I had chased the draw up further. Mind you, I did win £3k on the Big Bash today so can’t really complain.
