do you think its in a ready condition to play ? i always had assumption drainage at grounds would be good and ready to go
By:
ECE, apparently not at OT. Prematch, a lot of effort went into drying the outfield after less rain than we are having now.

I have no clue tbh. I dont know how much of a delay puddles like the one we see now cause(probably none). I am just counting on the outfield already being in a suspect state before the start of the match.
When India-Eng game's day got abandoned, the issue was that the groundsmen started working too quickly after the rain stopped which worsened the state of the ground. That delay wasn't caused by the drainage, but by the construction work and groundsmen going in too early. Now this could either mean they are careful and take their time getting the ground ready, causing a delay. Or it could mean they have learnt their lesson and know exactly what to do to get the ground ready in time. |

Old Trafford has previously had some problems with wet muddles and drainage. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/aug/08/rebuidling-work-old-trafford-drainage-unable-to-cope

Quote from Nasser Hussain 3 years ago: “The one thing you probably want to get right at Old Trafford is the drainage,” said Hussain, the former England captain, on Sky Sports. “It’s a shame that one heavy shower has ended up with the whole day called off.”

Tomorrow's forecast is for rain & heavy rain from 1pm
That makes it interesting if there are 4 session left max, especially if there is any delay today I've taken another grands worth of draw at 8.6/8.8. Under normal conditions the draw would be about 6s for a team trying to survive 120 overs. England still have 2 wickets left too. |

By:
Atherton said the outfield was sodden on the first morning and there hadn't been rain for 18 hours prior.
By:
market says no delay for wet outfield, rain has stopped in Manchester and the draw takes off
By:
UK Met showing Tuesday wetter than other forecasts.
Still water on the outfield. I'm not going to touch this. |
By:
You never know, maybe England have had a word with the groundsman and told him to take his time.
Surprised they aren't on the ground already tbf |
By:
BBC Weather showing showers from 9am.
By:
now the floodlights have gone off you see all the dark patches on the outfield & puddles
By:
And the draw flys out to 10.5 !!!
By:
Only 5:30 am.
By:
Humid and mostly cloudy. There won't be much natural drying.
By:
Might be a shower about 8am, that will slow things down!

Met office forecast for tomorrow far less horrific now. Can't quite decide whether to hope for lower draw price if Ali and Broad bat on (although you'd expect both to play shots rather than dig in) or SA manage a long partnership for the first or second wicket or just cash what draw I've got left in now.
Think I'll wait a bit. |
By:
Water that was on the outfield has sunk in. Bet the ground is soft there.
By:
nice work from groundstaff - out and about already - couple of covers removed. Shouldn't be any issues starting on time. 98 overs today - improved forecast tomorrow. Draw should be well north of 10 now.
By:
Oddly SA and draw both out overnight. I thought SA far too short but still rather counter intuitive.

The issue is soft ground from subsurface water.

The match odds tells us they are No Issues whatsover.

On the webcam still it still loooks sodden to the front right but there is no activity there so maybe just the camera.

By:
Jeez. They are fencing off the wet area.
By:
I've never seen that before.

By:
Inside the boundary? Not allowed to change the boundaries once the game has commenced
By:
There will be a ****storm if they play with that.
By:
And the draw keeps marching up.
By:
Why isn't that causing an Eng drift? I'm CONFOUNDED!
By:
wtf is happening?
By:
Nothing is happening. Play will start on time.
By:
And with a wet outfield this surface although covered will favour the seamers even more, England could declare, but won't, so just try and smash the ball, if we get another 30 great, if we don't it won't matter. South Africa will be bowled out quickly if the surface is like on Friday. especially with Moheen turning it as well.
