Oh and Bell at 3, Root at 4!
|
|
By:
one thing i will say in vince's defence is that it's a massive ask coming in at 4 when there was no evidence he was good enough.
Should really have been given a chance to score some flashy runs at 5 or better still 6, sometimes with the pressure off, at the start of his career. Both Bell and KP started lower down. |

comms got this wrong. it clipped the front pad which showed up on hotspot.

sorry - got it right now.

I think he is a decent cricketer and has what it takes to be a Test player but he needs to show it at County now with weight of runs and long innings. Next in the line!

draw still underpriced imho
ur asking the last 7 to get 350 to secure a 200 lead yeah,it's possible but improbable |

WD - Balance has been out to Yasir 3x so he shouldn't tour. But I think he will.
Such a shame about Taylor...Superb against spin. They could have gone with Borthwick when he was in great form. Hales has got hard hands and I can't see him coping in India. In fact if he plays I would open with Ashwin... It's quite a pickle indeed... I would move Root (again) up to open. Needs must. Bring back Stokes, maybe Butler/Borthers for Vince. Rasher for Ballance. Cook Root Stokes Jonny Borth Butler Mo Rasher Woakes Broad Jimmy Quite radical but 4 quicks, 3 tweakers and tons of batting (on paper ) |

all those 2nd div runs on flat decks @ the rose bowl just goes to show its not worth a hill of beans @ test level
|
|
By:
England play a max of 7 tests at home in a calendar year.
with SL playing 3 that only left 4 tests for Pakistan to play. I believe (and i stand to be corrected) that its down to the sky contract obligations. |
|
By:
Borthwick should have had a chance by now. I'm really not sure why he hasn't. Amazing
|
|
By:
all this go and score runs at county level is disingenuous
it doesn't equate to being able to replicate in the cauldron and varied conditions of test cricket also the converse could also be true |

all those 2nd div runs on flat decks @ the rose bowl just goes to show its not worth a hill of beans @ test level it's worth enough to be given a chance, but it's been a very long time since we've had the sort of insightful picks fletcher made. i'm pretty sure you could delegate selection to an algorithm without seeing any difference. |

now i finally know what Cook is

runs against 2nd div bowling is not good enough for me
|
|
By:
It's tough for selectors. They go on runs and personality and a hunch.
Sometimes it works incredibly well (Tres,Strauss, Simon Jones). Other times it's a bit of mare (Hick,Ramps, Vince..) |

Cook really should have inserted Pak on day 1. Well done Alec Stewart for putting Cook away

how many tests are won by the side batting 1st v 2nd??
even when it looks like a bowling day its usually a bat 1st decision if you win the toss...so many times the team that bowls 1st regrets it after the 1st day (need to bowl side out on 1st day to be happy) |
|
By:
not sure i agree. Cook in particular, has treated the paksitani bowlers pretty disrespectfully this series and made mistakes he shouldn't have because he was trying to be too aggressive, which is not his way.
if england had knuckled down properly on that first morning, i still think batting first was the right decision. a drawn series seems fair. Both sides have been hot cold and capitalised on their opponent's poor sessions. |
|
By:
perhaps not the right decision. a decision which could be defended.

Gareth Batty must have the plaque imho............

Eng have scored runs quickly throughout the series. It was a misjudged attacking shot by Cook in the 1st innings which turned things in Pak's favour when Eng were 70-odd for 1. It was the right shot, just badly executed. Root's shot was a loose one that got him out, just wafting the bat outside his off stump.
On a green-tinged pitch under cloudy skies, off the back of the Pak batting collapse at Edgbaston the correct call was surely for Eng to bowl 1st. |

yep - i agree. but on the other hand, if you choose to bat like geoff boycott and chris tavare for the first 40 overs, you'll still get the best of the batting, a chance at a big 1st innings score and you've grabbed the chance to bowl last on a wicket which will spin. i'm saying that having chosen to bat first, they needed to be a great deal more careful. |

DStyle correct imo...it was england's application in the 1st inns which was the major problem here
|
|
By:
Application, the definition of test cricket.
|
|
By:
Why did Cricinfo say "minimum 6 overs left" just now when there would only be two?
|
|
By:
That was a dead rubber in last year's Ashes. Very different circumstances. I think Eng would have skittled Pak for less than 250 on Thurs.
