well there's some synergy as well in so much that there's pressure on england and none on australia.
phil's got his dander up, and unfortunately whoever has ordered these pitches hasn't realised that the gulf between bowling sides is much greater on "dead" wickets than it is on ones offering some assistance to the bowlers. |

Debarshi: "Wonder whats cooking in Cook's mind..." Can we start again, please? We'll be able to start again in about an hour mate

That's a good point DStyle. Aussies have more pace to take the pitch out of the equation.
Still found it odd why it didn't swing yesterday though.. |

Do I not like that
My internet went down just as I was pontificating about cashing out with a reasonable green. Came back on at 30/4 and my book aint looking pretty now |

Aussies odds on for the series at the moment. Have to laugh at the lack of faith punters have in us. We smashed them last week and they still need 14 wickets to win this one. They had first go on this pitch which we all know will be easy on day 1, 4 and 5 and harder on days 2 and 3.
England still likely to win the series. Aussies have not won here for years. Clarke is terrible. Should be no where near any test side. Their number 3 has a technique that will not handle a pitch that is not a road. Their 6 and 7 has just been changed and is untested. If England had batted first here we would have had over 650 up in the time they crawled to 566. They got the best of pitch yesterday and got lucky by winning the toss. |
By:
16 wickets if you count Broad to bat twice.

Do you think that England can save this game Frog2?
My thoughts are that if England play well they can spin out the first innings to tea tomorrow. Aussie then bat for two and a half sessions to rest the bowlers (some of that time might include a rain shower Sunday morning) leaving them about 135 overs to try and bowl England out again. |
By:
We haven't seen a follow on for a while, but this is shaping up as one. Eng looking like no more than 150.
Looks like we will lose 20 to 30 overs from the rain. Not enough for Eng to salvage a draw. Those early Eng wickets didn't do me any good, but I have enough green for a modest profit at this stage. |
By:
Likewise pxb. I made 50% ROI yesterday and have been out since. Would have liked to lay the draw again this afternoon but didn't get the price I wanted so am waiting for another opportunity.

how many overs we lose sunday due to rain
By:
Only rain can save England. That was high class fast bowling from the Aussies.
By:
Don't think many overs will be lost on Sunday as only showers are forecast. Shouldn't take long to dry up afterwards. Will be a beneficial rest for the Aussie bowlers too should they enforce the follow on, which is unlikely in my opinion.
By:
Yeh forecast seems much better for Sunday now. England will do well to get out of this
By:
Australia should they enforce follow on
By:
Aussies fave for the win, but England may well squeeze out a draw if they get a decent total this innings. Hopefully the lose and it teaches them a lesson and they prepare a more helpful wicket for their seamers in the next test. Would be great to see tight series like 2005 and England edging it again.
By:
daft as it sounds, it could be over on day 3. after looking like a draw for all of day 1.
id guess that whatever england score will determine whether aus enforce or dont. 250+ lead and id guess they put england in again, much less and they may decide to bat again. personally, id enforce it whatever the score (obv unless eng get past it) cos i dont see batting last on this pitch causing the aussies much trouble. but the orthodox way these days is to bat again and set the other team around 400-450 to win. make the other team bat last, cos they nearly always get bowled out trying. |
By:
england to reach 400 all out @close..oz to score 500 and declare..leaving 1 hour on sunday and full day monday to prise them out. thats without stoppages.
By:
could someone explain how England are 40s rather than 4000?
seroiusly? |
By:
If England avoid the follow on which they should as it is still a good batting track, Aus may declare and leave them a target 4th innings as they like to play attacking cricket. 4000 is too high.
By:
The forecast for Sunday is cloudy with some rain between 7.00am and 10.00am, however only 30 miles south of that heavy rain forecast for that period of time, however that won't make much difference, as Lords is the quickest drying ground, in the uk, the ground can be underwater and 2 hours later, it is playable again. Now what is likely to happen today, well we could see an Ian Botham like innings from Stokes, or we could see him out in the 1st over, if Cook survives the 1st hour, we could see him carry his bat, for the whole innings
By:
They need 366 to avoid follow on? That might be a struggle actually with 4 down already. England could fall just short of that.
By:
Butler and Moheen, likewise could get out at any time and are likely to score at most 150 between them. The maxumum you can see the back 3 getting is 60 between them. So looking at that little lot 450 is a maxumum England can achieve and thats if all of those maxumums are got somewhere near. My guess is England will get between 225-275, so around a 300 lead for Australia. Clarke will bat again and get around a quick 150, which would leave Australia, around 5 sessions to bowl England out 2nd time around.
By:
2005 Ashes England lost by 259 runs at Lords in the first test. The Aussie team was much stronger then. England were bowled out for 155 in the first innings. We still comfortably won the series and have won every series in England since.
Suddenly an Aussie side that has just made 2 emergency changes after 1 test in a series are world beaters in English conditions? I don't think so. England had one bad half session after spending almost two days in the field it. That is all. |

I said before the game that England's top 4 needed to be culled. Root should not have had to face a hard ball. England were appalling came as no surprise but the batting was a new low on such a pitch. I would apply a bit of Sun Tzu.
Batting conditions are perfect today. The pitch should be at it's best and it is bright and sunny right now. England should still be able to avoid the follow on but much depends on Cook staying there. I would like to se our middle order play themselves in and only then cash in on that pitch. I expect England to avoid the follow on and quite possibly still get beyond 400. Ironically their best chance of winning this game is to narrowly follow on then do an India Adelaide. Most impossible of course. I think the draw is the bet if you can take a good beating. I am not saying England save this match but they have the tools to do it. Fast outfield, slope, short square bundaries , good hitters. Much depends on Cook today, rather ironic after the abuse most of us have given him. |

First hour vital for both sides really, but more so for England.
