I am not sure I want to get drawn in either, you might be right. Might be a bit of swing late in the day too. Sitting on draw at the moment, decent green.
My only concern is that England might go on to get a decent total here. Tomorrow will be best for batting probably. If England bat past lunch Aus will be behind the 8. Perhaps watch and wait is the best thing right now. |

Aussies don't like to come from behind

Jesus wept, Warner bowling medium pace. Scrape that bowl Aussies
By:
England should put their foot down now. Say 60/70 off the next 10 before the new ball
By:
bad time to lose that wicket!
By:
Must be exciting for the Aussies, not having to drink 2% pish at the ground

I think we're getting carried away with the recovery from 40-3.
Yes, we're having a decent day but this looks a 450+ pitch. Anything less and Aussies are very much in the game. 1 more wicket and it's their day. |

There is a two paced nature to this track that will get more pronounced.

nice bowling from Starc!

these 2 need 50+

This game is in fast forward, no holds barred

nice shot

England's approach is refreshing compared to Moore's tenure

will be fuming if overs short today after that debacle this morning !!!
By:
I am convinced that this is a very typical Draw pitch lifeless slow and flat. Aussies will get 550+ on here
By:
I'm still in agreement with you too, traderpj.
By:
interesting if Starc is struggling as the rest of his 30+ year old team mates hardly look full of beans after a day of fielding do they?
very quiet for Aussies who normally play flat out right thru the day having said that 1 more wicket tonight and it would be their day |
By:
england 450first inning at lunch 2 day , austrail 575 end of 3rd day , england 320 lunch at day 5 , australia need 195 in around 70 overs .

Tradder pj, I'm big red Oz but in a good position having laid them mainly at 2.04, big green Draw and in-between green England. Really didn't need that wicket!!!!

England need at the very least another 50, to get up to 400, a pretty even day, but if Aussies whisk, Englands last 3 wickets out for 20-30, they will be in charge, if England score another 120-130 very unlikely, it will be the hosts that are in charge. A great start to the Ashes series today.
By:
get the feeling 400 will do no more than keep england in the game here. both the previous tests here the team batting 2nd has gone way past that. even then might find themselves needing to bat 4 sessions to save the game
that said australia didn't bowl very well today. all over the shop at times and they certainly look very geriatric in the field. sure new zealand would have cut off a few of the boundaries today |
By:
aussies wont get 300...england to win from here
By:
well we do have 4 seamers and 2 spinners, as I quite rate Root, as a 3 over spell bowler, as he seems to pick up wickets. There was some indifferent bounce in the first few overs and that seemed to continue throughout the day and the pitch, can only worsen as the match progresses, but I would expect the Aussies to get 300, but I think that Wood may be our key bowler in this series, as I can see him causing the Australians plenty of problems. Hopefully he can lift his performances even more, which will help England in a big way. Lets hope, as an Englishman that you are correct 56.

Taylor said this wicket will be good for batting next 2 days. Still, Eng looking at a good total after some luck. Aus will do well to come in range 1st inn and I expect them to go into the 2nd inn behind. Whether we get a result will depend on Eng 2nd inn. Draw to go shorter I think.
By:
I agree that Wood will hopefully do well and he might just be the difference; Aussie batsmen don't really know him so will be a little under the radar as far as their knowledge of him - skiddy action which I think will be well suited by this surface as one or two balls have kept low - if England get 400 or so it should be extremely competitive - must hold on to any catching opportunities which present themselves but to me England are the bet at current odds

What on earth has happened to Geoffrey and Jonathan's podcast?? Seems to have been replaced by some 'social podacst' presented by that t**t Mark Chapman. Seething!!

Heavy showers now forecast for Sunday.
By:
A good 1st day and very evenly poised but the worry going forward has to be that Australia won't bowl as badly as they did yesterday again. On that pitch against that bowling England should have been something like 350-3 at the close.
By:
sunday not great, have just woke and checked bbc website for cardiff, says heavy to light rain for most of day, but 3 days away !!!!
By:
any thoughts ??

By:
I'll be surprised if this doesn't last till Sunday.

If England throw their last 3 wickets away they will give the advantage to Australia. They need another 50 runs and, ideally, another 100 to stop the Aussies controlling the game.Australia will score quickly and by the end of day 3 will be well in front......England need to bat on this morning, take time out of the game and get well over 400.....anything else and they're up against it.
