I don't think this is as flat a pitch as it looks, with our bowlers hitting 90+mph it will look a different wicket later tomorrow. These Sri Lankan bowlers have looked a bit county standard at best, 75mph doesn't get you test wickets. Ball keeping low as well and with score board pressure it will take something special from the Sri Lankans to save this test.

Well well,
Day went as I thought it might. Cracking pitch! England could have piled up 600+ but threw away first 3 wickets and Bell was unlucky to be reviewed even though it was out! Are England on top? My view is they need to score 500+ or they will be batting, if not to save the match then not to lose it on Sunday afternoon. I think a result is possible but not probable. Will take some comedy green on SL tomorrow afternoon when England are 400/500 or maybe even if they lose a quick wicket. At this point i shall also be looking to lay England big time. My only concern is that the hot weather will produce humidity and the ball may well swing but Saturday might not be so hot and I expect SL to bat all day. I expect SL to match England score or surpass it as the pitch is a belter. Here's the thing. In my view if SL manage to do this they have a better chance of winning than England and their price will crash. The pitch will be dry days 4 and 5. It might reverse and take spin later in the match. I think England will be batting day 4 and start of day 5. This is a dangerous time. If it does swing, spin or reverse, then England are vunerable unless they have a decent first innings lead. Still all to play for. Hoping for draw price to go odds on and lay it back for cover. Will lay England around 1.5-1.6 tomorrow afternoon. May back SL around 20. I don't think the pace of England bowler's will trouble SL unless it swings or reverses. |

whispering, think you're overrating sri lanka here. they're pretty desperate travellers as far as test cricket goes. without checking i reckon they've hardly won an away test ever against a proper side before or since murali was on the scene
the strength of this england side is clearly in the bowling certainly in english conditions. anderson and broad are still gonna be a handful even the sun is out not sure i'd want trust them very much facing 450+ on the board. a lot of pressure on sanga and jaya |
|
By:
I take your point mafeking,
I do however think this is a belter of a pitch and don't think the England seamers are top drawer when the sun is out. The only thing they have in their favour as far as I am concerned is enough pace to make it reverse. Obviously Anderson on his day is a magician but I don't think it will be in his favour for large parts of the innings. Facing fast bowling is not a problem on a batsman friendly deck. I do not see England ripping through SL unless it is humid and it swings. I think India could score 1,000 on this pitch! One more thing. No KP no ticket at 80 Sov's or whatever! Will be going on Monday for a tenner! |

yes this will be as about as friendly batting conditions a visiting side to england could expect in early season but rarely does the side batting 2nd bat past a big first innings total. certainly they concede a big deficit a lot more often
england have a bit more pace in their attack too. jordan will definitely get it through. lack of a spinner not such a big deal here. they rarely do well at lords although swann and even joe root picked up a few in that hapless aussie surrender last year looked a defensive move to me sri lanka putting us in. they were worried about facing anderson and broad on a slightly green pitch when in perfect batting conditions they should have backed themselves to get through to lunch 2 down and then made hay afterwards |

broad/anderson have been itching to get back to england to show how good they are again at test level after the aussie summer. i think they will rip through them today
|
|
By:
SL definitely a longshot now but I can still see a scenario where they win. I think SL can bowl England out cheaply with spin second time around but they will need to wrap these wickets up quick ( doesn't look likely ) and bat at a good rate for 2 days. Most likely outcome is 600 for England here.

yeah going to all depend how well SL bat when in now. trying to gauge how market will go on the draw if england dnt loose wickets early day 2

England are not great against spin, but they won in India recently on some bunsens
|
|
By:
They tend to be poor at manoeuvring the ball in ODIs but not that bad in tests
|
|
By:
It's only 344 - that's nothing special on this deck with the time remaining - SL need wickets quick but the lead isn't out of reach yet. Yep it's a long shot but seen stranger things happen.

I wouldn't get too excited about SL batting lineup, even on this deck. The old adage is the best adage. Never ever judge a pitch until both sides have batted!!
|
|
By:
I fear excitement will be limited for the rest of this match - reckon my mum could knock a ton up on this though.

I think the pitch is the winner here. Imagine if England hadn't lost the three early wickets! The most important thing to look out for today is how the pitch plays particularly the nature of the bounce. Is it true or a little uneven. I still think SL will bat all day Saturday unless there are signs of uneven bounce. That is where the game hinges for me.
Ha! wicket! |
