Have found this series very boring from a betting perspective as the Aussies have been dominant throughout nearly all the sessions and the betting graphs have just seemed to move in the same direction. The only chance of a competitive match in the remaining tests is if Australia relax having won the ashes and i don't think this at all likely as they want to rub our noses in the dirt. Not sure England have any fight left in them ;they appear shell shocked having believed the pre tour hype.Still they've got their central contracts so they're well off financially so why should they care. Pietersen for one should never have been selected for the tour;not only is he divisive in the dressing room but also his cavalier batting shows he just couldn't care less.

Congratulations to Australia who have fought over every blade of grass in this series. Every time England put them under pressure they responded. Every time they put England under pressure England folded. England have displayed a staggering degree of complacency both in players attitude, shot selection and even selectors. Regarding the players, there is nothing wrong with confidence because it breeds success but the mark of the champion teams is their ability to also play with the hunger of the challenger. England have lacked this.
Australia showed early in England's very first innings that they had worked miticulously on game plans for each England batsman. Either through lack of ability and/or hubris England were unable and/or unwilling to adapt. Finally the selectors proved Einstein's other theory that the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting different results. After the debacle of the first test they needed to be aggressive. They were passive and got walloped again. They had one last chance to be aggressive in this test by bringing in strike bowlers to seek wickets ( Finn especially). They chose the same method again and it has failed them again. Once again congratulations again to Australia and every one of their players. Three people should be signalled out especially. Two players have dealt with pressure in this series particularly well. Clarke as captain deserves enormous praise. He's led from the front both in batting and captaincy. Johnson bowled magnificently when Australia really needed someone in those first two tests and has really answered the merciless panning he has previously got from English fans. Also Lehman deserves great credit. He's gone about his work diligently but it can surely be no coincidence that Australia proved more formidable opponents in the summer where the scoreline flattered England and have been too tough and talented for England down under. As for the fans. BJT and others copped some right stick and stuck it out in the summer. Now is their time to enjoy the moment and we would be churlish not to take it now. |

Agree with last two posters......haven't seen as much as I would like, Mrs Wallflower's old man not 100% at moment - so having to make myself useful in helping out from time to time.
Started off great in first test layed England at just the right time - had been the plan all along as I thought (and had said) England totally over-rated, difference between the teams in the last series was way way less than 3-0 suggested. Made little or no money in the last two tests - trying to (generally) lay Australia in the hope that England might "dig in" and some English money might follow. Forlorn hope. I've found opportunities thin on the ground due to Aussie dominance, so a disappointing series so far for me from a betting perspective....and likewise don't hold out much hope for that to change; significant ebbs and flows, with spikes and money to be made going against the grain seems very very unlikely. Away from betting, it's clear as Eternaloptimist says the work done in preparation by Australia has been obvious and rewarding for them. What will be interesting is that in a 10-match series it is now (probably ) 3-3.... a far cry from the shouts of a 10-0, different class etc . Aussies will certainly not take foot off the pedal as the 2 series can in some ways be viewed as a 10-match series, and surely England will do everything in their power to avoid the whitewash. I don't think they are capable - exhibiting all the signs of a busted flush as a team. |

the england team arent bothered. havent been from the start. pretty much nobody in england watches the ashes when its in australia. cricket has always been a minority sport, but since sky gobbled up the rights the viewing figures are tiny with it not on free to air tv. home series you have the place full of england fans and theres at least a bit of media interest. in australia they know hardly anybody from england is watching them play. tiny sky viewing figures plus the matches are played in the middle of the night. under those circumstances, you need to have a very strong character to find the will to win and apart from a few they just dont have that. they know they can slack off, treat it like a holiday and come home with nobody really noticing how poor theyve played.
its not just the cricket team, english people as a whole suffer from this apathy. you see it with the football team too, they just count their money and arent really bothered if they get beat. but also in most other things. people just want the money, they dont wanna put in the graft. |

With respect rubbish. There are so many holes in that argument it is laughable. The cricketers beat India in India last year for the first time in donkeys years so it obviously matters to them when they go away from home and that is what is important in professional sport. Once you have reached a certain ability level how much do you possess in the way of ticker, desire and tactical adaptability? England have lacked these in this series. Not a home audience.

Can't blame the Aussies for gloating as they have completely dominated from day 1 of the series - England have been abysmal in virtually every department - to me it seems far too many have gone down under with over inflated opinions about their ability and listened to the hyperbole from others saying the Ashes would easily be retained. Australia have been meticulous with their preparation and have looked at every weakness within the England team and exploited a game plan perfectly. The English players really have to look at themselves and ask whether they want to play test match cricket as some have simply been found wanting - some have been out of form (if that is what you want to call it) for far too long and apart from the obvious reality that you can see it on the pitch they have personnel who record results of medical & fitness tests, record stats and monitor everything. If from all of this they couldn't identify specific problems and more importantly act on them then what the hell are they paid for. England already look demoralised and 5-0 is almost guaranteed as Australia will want to rub it in - I can accept being outplayed by a better team but I expect them to try as hard as they can to the bitter end and that is what hurts most because I do not see that. I'm afraid several English players should have played their last series but no doubt the same faces will reappear next summer (in England that is)

I tip my cap those English supporters with enough class to congratulate us Australians on a well earned Ashes victory, we aren't the most humble lot but I will say that when Australia was getting smashed by the English the Australian forum was a warzone with numerous threads aimed at us off the back of defeats. No doubt this fuel was sparked due to the nearly unbeatable team we had in the past but it's done, it is in the past now and we are left with 2 nations with teams capable of beating one and other when conditions suit.
However, there's always 1 who needs to find an excuse as to why England were dominated, an excuse that takes away from the Australian performance (which I have a problem with). sideshowbob, your name suggests to me you are a clown and what you wrote also suggests to me that you are a clown. You think the England team underperformed because the broadcasting rights don't allow the series to streamed back to England on free to air TV, is that what you're saying? unbelievable. Or are you saying they lost because they know back home not many people care enough about it simply because it's being played in another country.. whatever you're saying is absolute rubbish and you should be contacting a moderator to have your post removed in order to not make yourself out to be such an idiot. Trust me pal, I watched when Australia played in England and didn't win a single game and you bet your ass I cared, but hey.. that's just me. |
|
By:
Second Coming think you're being a bit harsh as I for one certainly agree with Sideshowbob that our sportsmen as well as our nation are at times very apathetic and as long as the money's rolling in they lack incentive. Agree with you that comment about not bothered because games not on terrestrial tv a bit ott as don't think the test matches over here bare either.
|
|
By:
I can't believe they are not bothered, their egos wouldn't allow that. Winning the summer series have allowed the selectors to ignore the deficiencies. Pietersen has continually shown that he rarely delivers when team under pressure and should have been ditched from the test team before now; Cook is clearly not handling the captain role and should ask to stand down so that he can concentrate on his batting, he is so much better than he has shown this year.
Like others, I don't believe this is a vintage Aussie side but what they might lack in class is more than made up in sheer effort and positive thinking. |

The ODI's will be interesting, Australia is much better at that form of the game than test matches, according to the ICC rankings.

for the third time running in this series, you have the chance to get about 2% tying your money up for a maximum of less than 2 days, laying the virtually impossible.
extraordinary how this keeps being the case. 6% over a month is not to be sneezed at in the current environment. |

Its not over guys a few quick wickets maybe a root five timer as he seems to spin it more than swann .
Target 450.....475 Then cooky opening partnership 150 .. Then a root ton taking us to 200..250 /2 Kp 50 takes us to 300/3 . Then ding dong to carry us over the line while the panic sets in among the aussies. |

Pitch and another hot day guarantees this won't go to a draw. England are rather more than a 50/1 shot to chase 480.

Rogers says the cracks in the WACA pitch will make it tough for England to chase a big total.
"If these cracks keep widening, then it's going to be very hard to bat on, and a little bit scary," he said. |

On the radio one of the England team were saying that between the cracks the pitch was good so all's to play for.
Think positive. |

They wont want it 3/0 with the big boxing day bash still to come and then meaningless.
Still expecting a 3 wkt win here with ding dong clipping the ball for boundary after boundary so broady dont have to run. Ive seen the fear in clarkeys eyes as he got out he knows they are in trouble . Well fired up here in harpenden was planning to hit aus for xmas with my profit but Im passing due to the rip off prices. Cant even have a decent ride out there without them bashing you tens of thousands in tax.Thats why everyones driving around in bashed up old pick ups i suppose.lol |

Fack me,
Andy Flower got nominated for best Coach at SPOTY! I have to say to the people who have again said the 3-0 scoreline flattered us this summer are wrong, wrong, wrong! The Aussie Tourists this summer were one of the most embarrassing teams to wear the baggy Green and that is why any Aus fans copped stick for defending them. Even the 1978 teams who may well have been the worst team were in fact Aussie Team 2 and a half due to Packer. People seem to forget what happened this summer. The debacle at Lords was the nadir in their fortunes, fair enough but if an England side capitulated in that manner I would be ashamed to be an Englishman. Winning 3 zip over such a side papered over the cracks for England particularly as we gave those jokers chances to win matches but they didn't take them. Compare and contrast the surgery of Lehmann and Flower. He ( Boof ) just dropped players who could not cut the mustard. Now Hughes might still turn out to be a good Test cricketer over time but on the greens of England with a Duke he was quickly exposed after scoring 80 something not out in the first innings of the first test he was dropped by the third. Cowan went. Khawaja went. Agar Agar went and I sincerely hope he comes back. Bird went after one. Cook, Trott and Prior performed poorly against a weak Australian side and were worked out. Bairstow played 4 matches despite consistently being found out playing across the line. In Aus Trott went ( thank goodness ) after the First. Prior escaped the axe God knows why and Cook is Captain but the weaknesses were glaring for all to see so either the batting coach has not done his job or the players are ignoring him so he should go as should the players. Swann has been ineffective and was out bowled by Panesar and who got dropped?. We have played on two fast bouncy pitches and only one of our gangling giants has been given a chance for one match. Why were the other brought on tour? Congratulations to Lehmann by all means and even Clarke although I can't stand him. This is not a bad England side but they have not been playing well for some time and the management must accept their short comings. Exposing Trott like they did was the worst thing Flower has done and I would like to see the back of him. England have been poor. No English fan is saying because we lost the toss we lost the matches. I said before the series started I expected Johnson and Warner to do well and thought Smith had promise. England have been very very disappointing and the seeming lack of fight allied to the lack of application does not sit well with me. I am sure a number of the players will come back but others need to be given their chance quickly. I remember after Sehwag scored the quickest double century in test history against Australia in Australia he was interviewed and the interviewer suggested he must be happy and excited. He said no, he was just pleased to play well after feeling so bad when he was dropped it was more relief than elation. The England dressing room needs a shake up quickly because a World Class India will mullah then even on English green! Flower as Coach of the Year, ROTFLMFAO! NOT! |

well his nomination reflected an away win in India and winning the Ashes at home.
a pretty good achievement for the year. Regardless, I'm a little bit glad that this series has gone so badly in some ways. The sheer bloody mindedness of playing to the same method against every side on every type of wicket has finally been exposed. Cook, I'm afraid, is as thick as the pigshit he shovels on his farm, and impossibly, more conservative than Strauss, shockingly so in the field. The win in India and the scratchy slow pitches over the summer, seem to have allowed him to justify the template Flower no doubt rammed down his throat. Contain in the field, go slow batting and grind them down. Let them lose it, rather than try to win it. But you can't play to that template on every occasion against every opposition. You have to be flexible according to the situation. And he's not. He's stubbornly sticking to the same method time and time again despite its being proved wrong. Not selecting one of Finn or Tremlett is beyond cognitive dissonance, it's just plain idiocy. Yesterday morning I tried to trawl through the stats to find a compelling case for Finn's being dropped after Trent Bridge. I couldn't. He was, quite simply, stitched up at Trent Bridge, not thrown the ball until it was almost 30 overs old in second innings. He doesn't fit with Cook's idea, and that's why he's not played for six months, despite our desperately needing someone tall and quick at Perth. Time and time again we've had Australia in tricky situations in their first innings, without having anyone with the firepower to attack the tail. Just contain and wait until they make a mistake. Not worked has it cheffy. I hope he's selected for the Boxing Day test and his omission makes everyone apart from him look like an idiot. I'm more annoyed about this than the batting. That dodgy mindset of not knowing whether to attack or defend, and the pressure is understandably destructive when you've only got half a second to make your mind up what to do. It's the tactical selection and intensity in the field that I can't condone, and where Cook is sorely exposed as being a fourth rate tactician. He serves no purpose, as it's so one dimensional you could teach a monkey to his job. |
|
By:
Agree with most of that WD.
Should have played Panesar and a tall quick as I noted in the OP. And I watched in disbelief at start of day 2 as ball after ball went thru 4th slip and Cook wouldn't put someone there. Cook just not captain material. Root has done well, despite some poor luck. Carberry, Anderson and Broad were good enough, but the rest not really up to it, even Bell. |
|
By:
Everyone's blaming England for being smashed off the park, wouldn't mind seeing a bit more credit thrown the way of us Aussies who have belted England in every facet of the game.
|
|
By:
It's fine lines 2ndcoming.
As i said in an earlier post, a lot of the problems with our batting are down to a number of small factors acting synergistically. The selection for the bowling has been poor. But there's no doubt that Australia's intensity, particularly rhino and johnson, Clarke's captaincy and batting, along with some hateful (from an English perspective) grit from Haddin have been absolutely central in allowing the disarray to flourish in the English camp. I still don't rate Warner highly enough at test level to include him in that quartet , he rides his luck, and he's been lucky. |

To the victor the spoils Second!
Aus have done well for a side needing to replace 3 of their top 6 batsmen and who have 3 of their best bowlers out injured! We are focusing on England because that is what we know. We do also know that Aus got beat at home in a series and at Perth of all places! by South Africa and 4 zip away in India. Aus are not a great side. Having said that they have been well marshalled on and off the pitch. Can't deny that. I do think Lehmann has turned them into a more than capable cricket team. So if we do not extoll your team there is no offence intended. I personally get more excited by talking about India's batting and South africa's bowling. Did you see Steyn and Morkel bowl recently to the mighty Indian batsmen? It was fantastic and everything this Ashes series is not...quality however I doth my cap and tug my forelock to you! |
|
By:
If Finn is now bowled in the boxing day test it is not only an admission of abject failure on the selectors part for not picking him thus far and especially for this test where his bounce may well have been a significant factor with him being by some way the tallest bowler had they played him. It would also be yet another kick to his nuts and an example of moral cowardice on the selectors part because if he doesn't do well they can say that's why we didn't play him. Conveniently omitting the fact that he has had hardly any bowling on the tour and that they refused to play him on the ideal surface in this test.
How has Jimmy Anderson done on this tour having failed last summer apart from Trent Bridge? Was he the ideal bowler for Aussie conditions? It was said before a ball was bowled. |
