Realistically England should have set their stall at a draw  , taking absolutely no chances .  Cook and Bell gave away their wickets , Carberry  slighty unlucky for second time in a row  , Pietersen a bit unlucky although the way he played that shot is hardly textbook . Root doing well .

Looks like Aussies will be taking a 2-0 lead to the WACA .

Root coming to the rescue   If a couple of players can stay with our hero.only the rain can save clarkey from a suicidal dec

That is why they are in this position, because they were playing for a draw from the first innings.  Playing zero attacking shots simply allows the fielding team to surround the bat putting them in a much stronger position to take wickets without risk.

BJT , grateful for the sub analysis .

England are in their current precarious position because

a) They lost the toss on a plumb wicket
b) They fielded badly and dropped catches
c) They ran into a storm in their first innings and Root and Pietersen and Cook didn't show up
d) Australia have played better so far

Englands best position after Australias first innings was to hoke out a draw  , with a very faint possibility of a win . To date they have failed to batten down the hatches sufficiently to force the Aussies into errors .  It cuts both ways .

if KP and Root were there I reckon Aussies would have been around 1.50-1.60 to win the game, Draw around 2/1
