A slave trader's statue in Bristol has been torn down and thrown into the harbour during a second day of anti-racism protests across the UK.

It comes after largely peaceful demonstrations in London on Saturday ended in some clashes with police.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick urged protesters to find another way to make their views heard.

But thousands of protesters massed for a second day outside the US embassy in London before moving towards Whitehall.

Other protests are also taking place in Manchester, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In Bristol, protesters used ropes to pull down the bronze statue of Edward Colston, a prominent 17th Century slave trader, who has been a source of controversy in the city for many years.

The cops are totally and utterly useless now no point in even abiding to the law with this going on

Law needs to be paused for a short period so we can get these absolute cretins out of there, the likes of Cressida Dick etc need to go

Edward Colston is, says Katie Finnegan-Clarke, “almost like a cult figure” in Bristol. There is a Colston Street, and Colston Tower is on Colston Avenue. There is even a Colston bun, which you might eat on Colston’s Day. Finnegan-Clarke, one of the activists in the Countering Colston campaign, went to Colston’s Girls’ school, where “there are statues everywhere, and we had three ceremonies every year to celebrate his life.” Colston was a 17th-century philanthropist who gave great sums of money to the city – money he had made from slavery. This week it was announced that there would be one less Bristol institution bearing his name. The concert venue Colston Hall – which has been a target for activists for decades – will reopen in 2020, after its refurbishment, with a new name.

A black bloke put out a tweet last night saying he's not oppressed, he has a job and about working hard to get where he's got, owns his own house etc. Basically told all that he's not a part of this rubbish and that if you work hard and play by the rules you can make a good living

A lefty white girl replied with "you feel that way because of us protesting" LaughLaughLaughLaughCrazyCrazyCrazyCrazy

There's no reasoning with these idiots, they are narcissistic and arrogant beyond belief, they want chaos its that simple

– it was built nearly 150 years after Colston’s death, and was unimaginatively named after its address, Colston Street, but its name still stands as a memorial to the man. It has seen performances from giants such as Ella Fitzgerald, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and David Bowie, but the Bristol band Massive Attack have famously boycotted the venue because of its name.

“There are very strong views on both sides; we always knew there would be a backlash,” she says. “Some people are cheering, some are booing, but what I had to do was take the right decision for the organisation. We can’t be inclusive if people won’t come into the building.”

A poll for the Bristol Post had found that people opposed renaming the venue two to one, and there have been accusations of airbrushing history. “I think the organisations that hold him up in that honorary position are the ones who are airbrushing history,” says Finnegan-Clarke. “He was one of the most powerful slave traders in Britain: 85,000 Africans were kidnapped and enslaved while he was running the Royal Africa Company. I think by honouring him, that’s airbrushing history.”

Just watched this on the news. What sort of signal does this send out? Police have waved a white flag and given up the streets. And they think dereliction of duty is the right response?

These people are using George Floyd as an excuse for the breaking the law.

We can condemn Trump (and rightly so most of the time) but at least he realises that these people can't appear to be running the show.

Someone needs to take control of the situation - very quickly. This is beyond fear of accusations of being deemed racist. Unfortunately, I doubt anyone is up to the task.

The only strategy seems to be to just hope it just fizzles out.

Wonder why people still believe society is so racist when there is so much handwringing about a statue of a slave trader and not questions about why there is one or why so many things in Bristol are named after one

He actually built many schools and hospitals in the area so no i don"t think these thugs were right to pull down his statue even if they don"t agree with anything he did, how would you feel if someone pulled down mandela"s statue and threw it in the Thames because they disagreed with his part in the ANC terrorist acts in south africa

That's what they hope.

Unfortunately, the agitators will have noted that police appeared powerless so it is inevitable it will happen again and again. Just a question of when.

They will have to tear down most of the world if they have a problem with how society operated hundreds of years ago.

Which civilizations have been built without exploiting other people?

Pretty much in their eyes

Soon being white will be straight up "racism", you will be replaced in your line of work or they'll call for that to happen its already happening in America

The past can't be sanitized. Statue or no statue.

Plenty of revered people have a somewhat checkered past, judged by the standards of today. But that's the point isn't it, historical people can only be judged by that standards of their time, not by what tw@tter likes in 2020.
