? to the experts, im playing level 7 and this morning i was left with eg 2 rooks and 6 pawns , v computer 2 rooks 4 pawns, i was well on top imo, but this match had only been in progress for id say 2 mins for this scenario, the following exchanges took about 30 mins which i blew again. my ? is i always though of chess as a long matches, would my above scenario be of a typical chess match, or are the early exchanges usually long drawn out.( hope you understand]

If you're talking about standard time control games (i.e. not quickplay games) then the time control will depend on the league, tournament, competition you are playing in.
For example the Wolverhampton League has two options: All moves in 80 minutes with 10 seconds per move added throughout (incremental) if sufficient digital clocks are available. All moves in 90 minutes. The Birmingham League has more options, e.g.: In any match where the away team have elected a preference for two sessions the default rate of play for the first session shall be 30 moves in 75 minutes followed by a further 24 moves in the next 60 minutes followed by an additional 15 minutes to complete the game. However, the first session may, by agreement be increased to 36 moves in 90 minutes or 42 moves in 105 minutes. In any match where the away team has elected for one session the home team may, provided suitable clocks are available, require that the rate of play shall be all moves in 80 minutes with 10 seconds per move added throughout (incremental). If the home team does not so require the rate of play shall be all moves in 90 minutes. For standard time control games it certainly is not usual to get down to rook and pawn endings in two minutes. another ? must be a glitch on my computer , but this is odd , IM IN CHECK BY A PAWN , AND AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED SHOULD BE CHECK MATE , BUT IT ISNT, WHATS ODD IS THAT I CAN MOVE MY PAWN NEXT TO MY KING DIAGONALLY TO AN EMPTY SQ.

ok, may I assume you are white? If so, blacks last move must have been g7-g5? Your h5 pawn can take the g5 pawn en passant and your h5 pawn moves to g6.

Playing on chesstime (free app) Im now hovering about 1650, not hit 1700 yet, prev to lockdown hovered about 1560ish.
Currently 1660 which is ranked 1715 out of 3.1m players worldwide and 91 out of 9003 in the UK. Find those 1700 upwards have much better opening knowledge and seem to make odd looking moves until 3 or 4 moves later when you realise why. Trying to focus more on getting pieces on getting on good squares, open lines, in middle game your major pieces want to be able to move about freely rather than get trapped in which can happen if you try to overprotect a weak pawn. So dont mind going a pawn down if you have real good positions for major pieces. Also sacrificing a major piece is often worthwhile if you get a min of 2 pawns (pref 3) and wreck their king pawn defence. Getting 2 rooks on their backline/pawn line together is deadly in a mid/end game. End games are crucial, such as how to defend with a King v King/pawn, (and vice versa) also if obv its going to just a pawn end game i try nd get a solo pawn on other end of the board to the pawn lines, thats a winner as their King needs to go over to it allowing you to mop up thier pawns and get 1 home. |

Forget about playing the computer it wont do you much good. Sign up for chess.com for free and play people with a time control of your choosing. You start off by playing people at your own level. This will do you more good than what you're doing now. |

I do realise it's a leap of faith from playing anonymously against a computer to being a person with a username whose games can be seen by others. Add in a time control and then you will start to understand what is required of the game. That is chess. Playing a computer isn't much fun.
