It is horrible! Mark was a very good player (a respected GM) and one I never beat. I got a draw once when maybe I should have played on, it came down to a queen and rook pawn versus queen (I was the pawn up). Technically it was a win but I hadn't got the technique to win it especially under the time control and Mark being a very fast player.

That's a very difficult ending to win, you need help from Paul Keres.
A group of us used to play in local weekend tournaments in the early 80s and some of them were friendly with Mark and Keith Arkle so we took particular interest in their games. I know they both became GMs but had lost touch by then and they were not often on the local circuit. I once played Tony Miles in a tournament, think it was Nottingham or maybe Leicester and was smashed out of sight. A different class. |

I used to play Mark and Keith frequently, Tony less so. I was friendly with Mark and Keith but didn't like Tony. I was sitting on the next board to him once and, as I did, was smoking. He asked me to move the ashtray, I told him it was nothing to do with him and carried on - making sure I blew the smoke in his direction. We never got on after that!

The thing about playing top players is you don't know where you went wrong. One moment everything looks sound and the next your position is falling apart, it's uncanny.

Mark and Keith played quick chess for fun and there was lots of laughter and banter. I only saw Tony a few times and he always looked distant and unfriendly.

I always used to play in the Bushbury tournament. One year I'd got, 3.5 out of 5 going into the last round but I had no chance of winning it. As I did I went to the pub at half-time, got bladdered and turned up late for the last round only to find I'd got Tony (having previously worked out that I wouldn't get him). I made a mistake after about 12 moves which cost two pawns but I thought may give me some compensation in open lines. It didn't. He was a seriously strong GM.

I used to like Bushbury too, a good venue and there were lots of players I knew from the league.

chess.com is great now we're in lockdown. I beat comp level 5 no problem but just enjoy playing skittles now as it's been many years since I played & I'm forgetting more than I should nowadays

Computers are more of a challenge, most people beat randomers a lot more than say computer level 5.

I can't follow that logic. If ramdomers are random then they should beat each other randomly.

I have a bog standard 50/50 record v randomers, computer 5 wipes the floor with me, I'm sure you'd beat it but most randomers would lose a lot more v 5 than win.

Interesting game, sluggish play from black and a fundamental error leaving the black Q on the open c file vulnerable to the discovered attack. Did you consider 12.e5 threatening a supported passed pawn on d6 with the king still on e8? Perhaps you didn't need that much excitement to beat a weaker opponent.
I sometimes used to play an early a6 as black before taking the gambit pawn with the intention of hanging on to the extra pawn which usually led white to opt for the exchange variation and an easier game for black. |

Computer does prefer 13 e5 with ideas of f4 or Qg4 depending on what black does. What it really didn't like was 24 Qd6 which it gave ?? even though I'm still winning. In the second game 11 .. Qd7 won on the spot! They were only 5 minute games with a 3 second increment so standard isn't very good. |

The book on end games I had was "Practical chess endings" by Paul Keres, but you know although important it's boring stuff for a beginner. I would suggest it's more interesting to develop your chess tactics because that's where most amateur games are won and lost and some excellent books were compiled by August Livshitz "Test your Chess IQ" and these are fun to play through.

Well played elisjohn! I used to play that for black. 8.. Nd5 is the book move which is slightly better for black.
