Italy is getting in the neck.

Another 196 'new' deaths today. China just 22.

China total deaths 3,158 . Italy 827.

China population compared to Italy?

Italy a few weeks behind China although you wouldn't implicitly trust their figures.

Both cultures very family orientated.

My son is working in Dubai and says their 'infected' figure is way under-reported.

Unless you're in a vulnerable group I'd stay calm.

If you get a fever, a dry cough don't go near nearest and dearest who may be at risk.

It's a lower respiratory tract virus so a runny nose wouldn't be an indicator pretty much.

Stay calm and carry on.

That's my feeling.

Get it now if you're going to end up hospitalised because you may die in a hospital car park.

F**king terrible prospect but the NHS may not cope.

Even more reason to implement 'social distancing'

I hate people anyway Laugh

Jolly - the mortality rates are dependent on age and underlying health problems. Over 70s far more at risk. There have been no reported deaths under the age of 9.

Under 40s are at very low risk also.

As this is a conspiracy thread, why do you think flights are still inbound from Italy and China?

Is Mass a contributing factor in Italy? They drink from the same cup.

One factor affecting the country’s death rate may be the age of its population—Italy has the oldest population in Europe, with about 23% of residents 65 or older, according to The New York Times. The median age in the country is 47.3, compared with 38.3 in the United States, the Times reported. Many of Italy’s deaths have been among people in their 80s, and 90s, a population known to be more susceptible to severe complications from COVID-19, according to The Local.

injera it certainly is worse the older you are but imo that is just helping you be complacent. an italian doctor interviewed last night said the median age was 65 but over the last week he had seen a couple in their 40s and even a 20 year old. being overweight, having high blood pressure may lead to higher morbidity too.

once it takes off, people who could be saved will die as the hospitals will be full. in italy doctors are deciding who to let die, if you are old or having existing conditions they arent even attempting to save you.

it is true that children havent been badly affected i am no scientist so dont know why.

what i do know it is that it is a highly contagious illness that survives for many days on surfaces and leads to as many as 10%-20% of its victims needing hospital treatment. it is a very serious situation and government complacency means we are likely past the point of being able to control it.

just announced another two deaths in the uk. exponential growth if uncontrolled.

Sounds very grim indeed, Jolly.

I wrote yesterday on the other thread that 55% cases in Italy have been hospitalised.
By:

When: 11 Mar 20 20:14
The cases recorded including deaths are incomplete. We’ve no idea how many in self isolation have the virus. We only know if they are tested.

So there’s likely to more cases. As they hopefully recover, that will never be recorded. So the mortality percentages we’re currently given are not accurate. We hope the mortality rate is therefore much lower than
we’re being told.

And now a comment the 98-year-old Duke made more than 30 years ago has resurfaced.

In 1988, the Duke of Edinburgh joked about deadly viruses when speaking to Deutsche Press Agentur.

Prince Philip reportedly said: “In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, to contribute something to solving overpopulation.”

The gaffe has made a comeback due to the recent coronavirus outbreak.

Injera,

As the OP says, there will be many positive cases not recorded.  I see this as a positive and a negative. Positive, as per your post but negative in that the lack of testing may contribute to further spread than would be the case if routine testing were available.

Maybe a higher proportion of those reporting symptoms will be tested when we get to the end of the month and out of the cold and flu season.

In 2017 there was an increase in deaths between January and March. 1187 per 100k. Mortality rate 1.187%.

This article below is interesting.

‘In the 2017 to 2018 winter period, there were an estimated 50,100 excess winter deaths in England and Wales.’ It is likely that last winter’s increase was due to the predominant strain of flu, the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine and below-average winter temperatures”.
Excess winter deaths is the additional number dying compared with spring, summer and autumn deaths.

If you needed to telephone 111 with symptoms, I would imagine the first questions would be about your age and if you are receiving treatment for any illnesses?

Then the advice you get would be based on your answers.

Research has found that people aged 80 or over have a 14.8 per cent risk (one in seven) of dying if they develop COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The local president of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, confirmed: 'All the deaths we’ve had are either very old people or very sick people,' the New York Times reported.

there wont be any free beds, the next lot of patients will be in them. over 65s arent even considered for saving in the worst parts of italy. no health system can cope with the scale of this thing, that's why draconian measures should have been introduced to stop it gaining a foothold in the first place.

we have to hope what leif says about a peak in 6 or so weeks is what happens.

tommy went for the sensationalist angle.

there are many scientists and mathematicians modelling this around the world, plenty to read if you so desire.

complacency and incompetence rather than conspiracy in play here imo, all around the western world. some countries in the far east have taken a far more studious approach - singapore, hong kong and taiwan who are right in the firing line but have a far more aggressive approach. the view is these countries have deep scars from sars and dont want to get caught out so have acted accordingly.

south korea had a bad outbreak due to religious nutters and have undertaken massive amounts of testing. testing, isolation and contact tracing are what you should do apparently. even so after seeming to be in control they have just had a major cluster appear at a call centre so are still deep in the doo doo.

Makes you wonder what the youngsters make of it all.

Seeing the longevity rate drop yet expected to invest in their retirement.

Greta Thunberg et al putting the fear of some god or another into them.

They'll be adopting a tenet they're here for a good time and not a long time much like the hedonistic, heady days of the sixties.

For those who 'listen' I advise them to invest in physical gold (not paper).

Most of the next middle agers will be drones, maybe micro-chipped into the 'hive'.

Scary

Andrews was being a little too honest.

Eugenics is nothing new whether it’s abortion, infanticide or euthanasia. Hospitals and care homes can barely cope with keeping the elderly alive.
