Finally decided i've had enough of the booze.
I only drink beer(no spirits) etc.
Has anyone on here successfully stopped in the past? Any tips on best way to stop?
Really want to give this a good go but nearly all of my socialising includes drinking.
Thanks

I successfully stopped in August 2010.

Returned from a trip to Houston and have never had a single alcoholic drink ever again.
Like yourself, I was a beer drinker.

I can honestly say that I've never even been tempted.

Spend some time thinking about why you drink, and what triggers you to walk in to a bar.
Then immediately eliminate these from your life.

Don't set a future date for when you will stop.
Just stop.

If you are unable to do that, no big deal really, it simply means that you don't want to stop.

In your case, you'll need to stop socialising in the manner to which you currently do.
Sounds tough, is tough, but well worth it.

Good advice from Angoose.

Some people can cut down quite easily or stop altogether, while others struggle to even cut down a little.
I suppose it must be down to body chemistry.
An good incentive to stop which usually works, is a dire warning from their doctor.

Drinking is one of the great pleasures in life for a lot of people. So for these to stop drinking is a trade off;  their health at the expense of their pleasure.
Which is why many still choose the latter and carry on drinking.

Whilst you speak total sense Angoose a VERY heavy drinker could have a seizure if they just stop. In this scenario doctor's advise a reduction. Most will not fall into this category though.

Oscar Wilde once sagely remarked that he could resist everything except temptation.
Remove the temptations.

My drinking was largely habitual, and the experts tell us that it typically takes six weeks to break a habit.
The first few days will be difficult, just comfort yourself with the knowledge that it will get easier.

I was fortunately never in the position where I NEEDED a drink, but was drinking pretty much seven days a week prior to stopping because I LIKED a drink, it was simply what I did of an evening.

If you also drink because you like to, rather than need to, then the ability to abruptly stop is within your control.

Good luck, but just be certain it is what you really want to do.
I'd imagine that trying an failing would make subsequent attempts seriously challenging and doomed to failure.

I used to have a real problem with it, I could never have 1 i had to be wasted, whilst everyone went home at 11pm . I didn’t, and in the end payed the price.anyway managed 2 years, then 6 months,so on and so forth. friends treated me as weak when I refused (I work in the building trade.full of bravado) hastled and goaded me to drink (not friends)...still I understand it was my weakness..  so good luck with it bud..hope you succeed..remember it takes a man to walk away,I wasn’t, ..

Maybe you just need to look at the kind of people you are socializing with. Some habits are built by being around a bunch of waenkers.

1am this morning marked 1 year since I had a cigarette.  I still miss it.  Sometimes I dream that I have one and it's sooo good, then I finish and I'm mightily disappointed with myself for giving in.  Then I wake up, realise it's a dream and I'm very relieved.

Why have you had enough, Drinking in Moderation does Little harm , Plenty of non Drinkers  in Grave yards , I have a couple of Drinks most nights , Occasionally a few too many the Weekend it doesn't cause problems in my life ,if it Did I would Knock it on
the head ..

Of course if Health Issues that's another reason .

Age could be another Factor if young and it causes ISSUES STOP.

I had high blood pressure a few years back; pills kept changing but nothing would bring it down. Doctor couldn't work it out, but then I quit drinking (I was drinking quite heavily at the time) and everything went back to normal. Coincidence? I think not.

You done good, as do so many other naïve 20+ men (and women for that matter), but unfortunately some keep going. Prepared is at least sensing the danger and questioning it. That's positive.

Ah and it was all going so well nanny. I could nearly mirror image your situation apart from the day time drink. I much prefer a drink in the daytime now to an evening. I find it far more comfortable, especially at the weekend. Agree with the holiday comment. What would you do of an evening?

Apparently just one drink per day makes you 100% less likely to become a suicide bomber.

Cheers for all the replies lads, will be using this thread to monitor progress and see how i get on.
First evening a tough start as went to a mates to watch the football, order pizzas etc with 6 of us there.
Instead of turning up with my usual 8 cans of beers i went with a big bottle of diet coke.
Went ok. Just hopeful now i'll be able to sleep.

If you knock out the beers and the pizzas you should lose several lbs in weight.
