There are many electronic 'drone protection systems' available . Apparently it would take only 2 of these to provide cover for Gatwick and 3 to cover Heathrow . They have yet to be licensed or installed in the UK , for some reason or another . If one of the reasons is "cost" then I suggest that if they would have prevented today's debacle then they would have covered the cost and more .
Any rough estimates as to the losses incurred due to this troublesome little episode ?

I have heard the losses incurred run to a few quid.

Wonder how quickly this country could be brought to its knees?

Sorry but this country is weak and ultimately finished imo

Well , let's think of it this way :-
If some evil tyrant such as a Goldfinger , Dr No or a Russian president (purely hypothetical of course) could fathom out a way of hitting the UK with a sudden fall of leaves covering all major rail routes , the 'wrong' type of snow covering all other thoroughfares and fog to descend on all airports , then my guess is that summat would hit the fan and we'd grind to a standstill . Throw in half a dozen small to medium size drones and it's highly likely we would recede back to the middle ages and have to start growing our own veg .

Ryanair to operate its Friday LGW schedule from Stansted, and Sky News reporting that LGW is advising passengers (of any persuasion, not just Ryanair) to not travel to LGW tomorrow.  This is quite staggering....

A part of me thinks its simply not possible for this to be happening over a drone though

Something sinister behind all this

I have a number of friends who are commercial airline pilots.  Their take this morning was that no airport operator, nor aeroplane captain should be willing to operate into the airport until they are content that the threat has been dealt with.  That seems to be the industry-wide stance.

Personally, and not-withstanding the fact that a drone could do a lot of damage if it happened to hit the right bit, I think it's a massive over-reaction.  As an American pilot has said, if this was New York JFK, they'd add an additional advisory line to the latest Automatic terminal information service broadcast about drone activity, and they'd just get on with it.

SS - Are you suggesting that it may be some elaborate terrorist plot that has been foiled , but in order to 'play down' the threat and keep us all in the dark they've put out some wild , concocted story about a drone ?
Confused

Germany's biggest airports are on alert after four suspected terrorists were spotted staking out Stuttgart airport, reports say.

Police are said to be hunting for a son and father from North Rhine-Westphalia and two others seen taking photos of the airport's terminal and grounds.

Details of the suspects were passed to German police by Morocco's secret service, reports say.

By:

When: 20 Dec 18 20:57
it stinks does it not  - as an old practitioner of radio controlled planes it would take something like a strike on the intake to cause a problem if any  - of course if they think their are bombs involved or there has been a threat made it may be a different scenario

there may be more to this than we are being told

what I would be interested in is the range from transmitter to receiver -  time to ban these things anyway.

SS - They clearly haven't apprehended those involved and yet they still stand by their announcement from early this morning re : "Terrorism has been ruled out" . Why so quick to rule something 'out' when you haven't got the faintest idea what you are ruling 'in' . When I heard that original statement on the news this morning my first thought was that it almost certainly was terror related .

Moisok - Apparently there are all sorts of methods of controlling them right through to completely remotely on any 4G internet connection, with flying ranges of 200kms and 6hr+ endurance. Supposedly, they aren't actually *that* expensive either.  It's definitely an area where we need more comprehensive legislation, however, as it has always been the case, that only works with people concerned with staying on the right side of the law.

even short range could be lethal - there is a history of using flight for bombardment out of sight etc etc but
forget my babbling - just ban them as the technology is way beyond what we used to use and is clearly lethal

even simple systems can improve range and on target time etc etc

BAN THEM

A drone hitting an engine COULD cause a plane to crash. Similar to a bird strike.

It's rare though. Mostly the object or birds would get chewed up and the engine will survive.

Elf and safetee tho innit.

They can literally have modems built into them, so as long as it has internet connectivity, the range is limitless.

this is the best project fear about at the moment. Taken from a certain MP's twitter

Doesn’t the Gatwick meltdown today bring into sharp relief how vulnerable no-deal contingency plans to bring in vital supplies and medicine by plane are?

not even no deal can stop the drones

maybe this is a solution to frictionless trade, send a drone full of parts across the border
