older style blocks fit for purpose if not cladded with plastic/foam crap - and  why no central alarm ?

why children /elderly/infirm on higher floors ????

young  men (even women)  at the top and a hasty retreat to the bottom if the alarm calls .  all out in 10 minutes . NO going back for personal effects /money - LEAVE property immediately.    Extqsher  and a fire blanket in every kitchen .   Hoses no good in public areas as they get stolen .

The fire crews were there mighty quick - but the fire was spreading FASTER than the crews were working on it -

Personally i hate the look of (grey) cladding and would prefer  using masonry paint as a cheaper option - obviously it was down to green issues .  How much of a carbon footprint is a tower block per hour  compared with an airliner  flying half empty ?

and why were so many protesters concerned with accomodation in the same borough ?  wtf ?   - from the vibes i get they  would want to be somewhere else in London .

Terrible ,preventable tragedy

Still like to Know what Started it ,if as suspected it was an Exploding Fridge ,Then a Gallon of petrol would do the same, imo
it would be a better accelerant ,if that is the case how can this cladding ever have been deemed fit for use ? Something not adding up .

no idea casemoney - in the mean time  every one of these cladded  deathtraps should be condemned  until the cladding is removed . And have every cladded  block under 24/7 surveylance  for obvious reasons .

the fridge was near a window according to reports -  the heat presumably then melted the  Plastic windows -or the window was open and then it went from there .

The irony being that building up is now, again, largely seen as the only solution to meeting the housing crisis in major cities across the world

Actually, be prepared to be appalled but with the advent of simulated reality there is talk of the inverted skyscraper.
Where they 'build' downwards and create artificial Windows that are actually computer generated skylights letting in 'the sun'

I saw them a few years ago, they are very convincing screens, this will inevitably happen and people will be burried out of sight.

Where people are involved there will always be disasters.

How could cuts be responsible for the lack of safety when 9 million was spent on insulation?
Lack of alarms, no sprinkler system, inferior material used for the cladding.

A woman resident on LBC this morning said ''as we were leaving our flats the firemen were telling us to stay in them.''

Like I say where people are involved.

It just makes me think of how we have become a world of opportunists, who ride the foo k out of any and everything.

Isn't this looking like when the NHS pays the private sector way too much for stuff and millions just get written off?

Most new housing is now 3 storeys high on a smaller footprint. I haven't seen new bungalows built for years, where will all the old people live in the future? No doubt we'll keep filling the country regardless, let the next generation sort it out.

Forensics will be very difficult in the aftermath. Collecting DNA to identify the victims will be horrendous as a match will probably have to take place using a sibling which I understand is harder than if they had a sample from the victim (as in the 9/11 terrorist attacks when they could get it from such things as toothbrushes etc).

Coachbuster, " why were so many protesters concerned with accommodation in the same borough ?  wtf ?"... it's a cross between victim and 'refugee entitlement' mind-set. You and I would be counting our blessings at being alive, different day's, different country. Of course we would do anything to help, what decent person wouldn't?? but sadly we are not all singing from the same Hymn sheet anymore. I blame politicians, LIb's and our dreadful media for this 'mind-set'. Cry

I wasn't so sure about the fridge theory given the amount of people that would have been cooking at night in that block but apparently fridges are a worse fire risk than I'd thought. I sometimes switch it off if I go on holiday but a tip is to leave the door open a crack. I once went away with the door shut and it was a sealed wet warm box with a little food I'd forgot to take out of it. It was like a green moldy rainforest..Sad

This from the Daily Mail:

Indeed, the tragic irony is that if Kensington and Chelsea had spent not a penny on refurbishment, the blaze could almost certainly have been contained.

As it was, the authority spent £8.6million on ‘improvements’ – money that appears to have been spent with appalling incompetence, hugely increasing the risk of an inferno. The way residents’ warnings were ignored should haunt all concerned.

For just £200,000, life-saving sprinklers could have been installed. Instead, priority seems to have been given to meeting EU targets for energy conservation, with the contractors using inferior exterior cladding of a type banned in other countries and insulation known to emit lethal cyanide.

- I don't know if this is true but..Sad

JC, does it feckin matter! I defy anyone to pick the reason out of this charred mess. Yes a reason will be given, and will be backed up by some forensic nonsense to satisfy the rubbernecks. How do I know this? I have first hand knowledge, you don't, let it rest FFS.

BTF my point was that fridges are a fire risk and people should be aware of that and e.g. switch them off if they are away for a long time.
Also I might add, check the back of them if gettign a new on.
ome are metal and apparently ok, but ones with plastic backs are the ones that will go up and burn badly if there is a problem.

Who cares if she meets them, other than people who have it in for her, she's not jesus. The knives are out for her, the grief she is getting is insane, it makes me ashamed to be British. Would it be wise for her to go down an meet a mob of Socialist Worker/Corbynites/Momentum fanatics who are trying to totally politicse this?

JC, forgive me, I've worked with all the (types of people) involved in this type of thing at the most senior level. I and many others have been screaming about this shyyte for the last 30 years. Nobody was listening, bottom line comes first. The last few days have gotten to me, nothing personal mate, I apologise.

I was just reading about fridge fires, it's inssane that they aren't, by similar regulations, forced to be fireproof. They are a metal box for gods sake with a compressor etc there is no reason they shoudl be a risk, but apparently they are allowed to have highly flammable insulation in them. Where have we heard that recently SadSadSad?

I dont like my new washing machine, it tries so desperately to save water it feels like it doesn't use enough, to be "green".
It's madness, we're not australia, it's not washing clothes as well to save what, one flush of the toilet?

Main thing with fridges is to allow them to 'breath' have at least half a foot gap at the sides, back and top. Don't stack sh!t on the top or against the sides!

People saving water so that others can water their gardens. Nice.

When I was a kid we'd never heard of a hosepipe ban or saving water.

You may have gas generated hot water on tap (cheap), but you can only feed cold into the washer, which is then heated by electric (expensive). Greens, walos.

The low temperature goody goodies ignore the fact that the decrease in temperature has to be augmented by nastier chemical products. A 40 degree wash with a relatively harmless product will suffice for most household washing. The product is 'bulked out with water if liquid and Sodium sulfate if powder, wave your T shirt in a breeze for a few minutes and it will do a better job than Sulphate, A ton of the stuff costs pennies to produce. All washing powders are 90% + made with this shyyte, the surfactant content is minimal is comparison.

Bloke I know had one of these inflatable swimming pools. He'd got the water turned on non stop for days filling it.

I use the use the hose pipe every day in the garden during the summer.

And they're limiting the  water used in washing machines?
