I'm just looking at the photie, here...it's LADY MIEUX that I copied...I used to buy the big gilt frames from the Pakistani cash n carry as they were only £10 back then...then I would sell the copy that I painted on the hardboard...and I'd bet the money on a Saturday...

Foinavon, that picture has an Edward Hopper feel to it, particularly the right hand side.  Must be the colours, materials? and the light.  I love his work.

Well spotted that man. Cuba it is with all the ancient American cars kept running on a wing and a prayer. I've never been there but have a little cache of photos some of which I hope will become the basis of paintings if I live long enough.

I like Hopper too Jack and have copied some of his work in the past. I might post some on here before too long.

Tall women appear elegant and even if the reality is stretched the image is still pleasing to the eye.
My wife bought a few figurines of overly tall women in period costumes and some of them are on the mantlepiece.

Here is my copy of "Girl at a sewing machine" by Edward Hopper. Done with gouache on paper.

Beautiful portrait of Diana, Zorro.

Love your pastel car pictures, Foinavon.

I think we need to thank Hank for starting this thread Love

Hope you will get your pastels out again and have a go M-D, it's great fun. Just doing something simple like a daisy flower gives a sense of achievement. Five minute sketches without a care whether good or bad will bring you on leaps and bounds.Think about that old lady painting at 90, it has been a lifetime's joy for her and I understand why.

Although I didn't care for the woman I love that picture of Diana, Zorro. You have captured the doe-eyed look and the smile through gritted teeth perfectly.
Also Compartment C car is in my Hopper book and instantly recognisable. I have a cropped extract of a famous one of his and I will post it once approved. I'll leave you to guess the original.

Being a complete ignoramus I wasn't aware of Edward Hopper's work until this thread Blush

Just been looking at his paintings on Google. They are stunning!

I have looked at Girl at a sewing machine. As lovely as it is, I think I prefer yours, Foinavon Whoops

Anyway I'm off to to find out more about Edward Hopper. My new favourite artist Love

This was a quick watercolour sketch I did a few years ago so don't expect too much. It's an extract from a larger work by Edward Hopper. Can you guess which work?

Chop Suey.

When: 23 Jul 16 22:25
Chop Suey is correct Happy I think the window is the giveaway. I would like to paint the whole thing one day on a large sheet, perhaps half Imperial and hang it in my room. It is on of his best in my opinion.
I have another Hopper copy done in pastel which I'll post probably tomorrow.

Ah, at last! One I can actually put a name to (I hope) Telly Savalas?

Hopper called this one "Sunday" and reminds me of the time everything was closed on Sundays apart from pubs (for a limited time) and churches. Consequently the streets were often deserted.
My copy is pastel on paper.

I have just ordered Painting with Pastels by Jenny Keal Excited

It will help get me started again and there are chapters on harbour and coastal scenes, which is what I want to do. The reviews for it on Amazon are excellent.

Must concentrate on Fake or Fortune now.

I agree with you Zorro. He is small in the original too and I wish I had made him larger. I think the height of the wooden apron in front of the shops is more than what we would assume to be a single step up and is reminiscent of the old wild west towns before tarmac roads. I could rub him out in a second and draw him in again but I'm a bit averse to "improving" old work and tend to let the warts remain as a true record of what I did back then.
Sundays did tend to be boring affairs back then, what we have today was hard won against church and union opposition.
Thanks for the comments and the link M-D. I don't know the book and will look it up. Landscapes are better for starters as there's not much need for detail or complete accuracy apart from perspective.

From what I can view of the book on Amazon it looks good. She has videos posted on youtube and I have just watched one through. I noticed that she is married to David Bellamy (not the enviromentalist) who is a well known artist in his own right. Good luck and I hope to see some of your paintings on this thread in a few weeks time.Happy

Harvey and Me is reminiscent of Hockney, as are your pop art portraits, Zorro. I think it's very good.
Have you done any abstract paintings? Not something I ever got into although I like much of Kandinsky's work.

Drawing flowers, as mentioned earlier, can be relatively easy and rewarding. Here I made a quick pencil sketch in my A5 book of a clematis coming into flower. Some time later I turned it into a larger watercolour painting on A3 paper.
