"A 91-year-old woman has been questioned by police in Germany — after she filled in the blanks in a piece of modern art based on a crossword puzzle.

The pensioner, who has not been named under German privacy law, was questioned under caution after she filled in the work valued at €80,000 (£67,000) with a biro.

"Reading-work-piece", a 1977 work by Arthur Köpcke of the Fluxus movement, essentially looks like an empty crossword puzzle.

Next to the work is a sign which reads: “Insert words”.

The hapless pensioner explained to police that she was simply following the instructions."

I vas only following orders.

Yes, saw the spivs programme. Poor old Jeffrey Archer, sold and the price doubles. A bit like trading on Betfair then.

The pixellated painting looks good, must have needed a lot of patience. Did you use a low resolution photo for it?

The cat is a decent effort Alpha, the eyes especially.

One for your collection Hank, here is a drawing I did a few years ago of a well known cartoon character.

how many squares a day? tedious. put a photo through a
few filters and reduced it down to 75 x 75 pixels.

only did four of them. was not worth the time and effort.
sold one of them for £400. gallery takes 40 percent.
better to do quick paintings.

Think I would be pleased to get £400 for a painting. The gallery take does seem a tad excessive though.

Thought I would load another pastel portrait. I thought this image was interesting as the performer is using an unusual design of accordion. After a lot of searching I discovered that it is a traditional Polish folk design which was celebrated on a postage stamp a few years ago.

I rarely do landscapes as it's hard to find something unusual. Too much green for my taste.

I like the distinctive design of this bridge though and was wondering if any of you recognise where it is. Clue, it's in France but not Paris.

The bridge is the Pont Neuf over the Garonne river at Toulouse. It was constructed mainly during the 16th century. It is 220 metres long and has seven arches but two were enough for me.

I like much of the work of the celebrated photographer Steve McCurry especially where he gets plenty of light and contrasting shade into the image. This painting is based on a photo taken in a railway station.

reminds me of the opening sequence
in the films where the man runs down

might be the long shadows.
very german expressionist.

This is based on an original painting by Sir George Clausen, however I have replaced the young girl in his painting with the image of an older girl, a family member of mine.

Thanks for the link, Aunty. Your painting is lovely, Foinavon Happy

I'm thinking that could be a young Michael Douglas from Zorro. Also thinking that I'm wrong.

Sir George painted some lovely sensitive portraits often set in idyllic countryside. Unfortunately it all went out of fashion and fortunes are changing hands for some rather odd stuff these days.

see - portraits are problematic - better off
doing abstracts or landscapes or fruit.
If you showed a man living in Africa a
portrait of Dustin Hoffman it might mean nothing to him?

it's really good that you pick a subject with air
all round them. With depth.
the blues and the greens are very harmonious.

I have zero interest in films and other pop culture even less in "celebs". I could recognise David Beckham though.Cry

Thanks Z, a picture has to resonate with me before I will spend time on it. Perhaps it's why I do so little original work. I have done portraits of people I know but in general I wouldn't post them on here. Most have been given away anyway.

did a David Beckham in ink - but can't show it,
I made an agreement to the buyer I wouldn't
show it - Beckham with his baby in his arms.

Really like this last one Foinavon....

Some people are wasted on here!

What would be your typical time to paint such as that?

I'm not going to put up any more of mine, as sometimes I think they are "laboured", and just lose the vibrancy of something with spontaneity!

Well done, did you get a good price for it? Pop culture does have its uses.

I have work in progress of a Cuban bar scene of yesteryear which has a huge black and white portrait of José Marti on the wall. He is a national hero, the local celebrity of his time but would not be recognisable outside of the Spanish speaking world.

That one took me around 6 hours Aunty spread over a couple of weeks. (I like my tea breaks).
The basic outline sketch would take around 30 minutes then I would build up the colours in stages starting with a pale wash, as in the sky colour, then progressively adding more density of colour and detail.
