I'm also awaiting the Thatcher ordered the attack on the Belgrano.

I thought that was wrong, as they were sailing away and were no threat,
but we had reached the stage where we did not want any sort of truce until we retaken the Falklands
otherwise we may never have got them off

I also think we were more concerned over oil reserves than the islanders myself, although it was also a matter a British pride at stake.

If one looks where the Falklands Islands are, they patently belong to Argentina more than us. But by international law they belong to us.

There is a lot of oil around the Falklands, I think we could do some sort of deal with the Argentinians. This is about oil.

I did not like Thatcher but although she ignored warnings, she then did the correct thing for us.

One other thing, if we had conceded the Falklands then our occupation of Gibraltar would also come into question.

We have to hang on the Falklands, but offer the Argentinians some of the surrounding waters, those with least chance of oil.

Thank God (whoever he is) that we had Mrs T to stand up to the Argies and, fyi mac, the Americans who tried to force us to do a deal.

think they might have been from Wythenshawe ET , plenty of scalies round there

They were from Newton Heath Hanks. I ran across a few of their lads playing for different clubs some going as far east as Denton to play for the Halfway House and then on to Sunday league for a team called Edgefield. I remember we used to play all these other local teams from Middleton and surrounding areas and we kept hearing how we'd have a good battle with Edgefield as we also had a few handy lads. Me and my mate who was an ex marine were carrying each other up this huge hill to get ourselves psyched up and fit for a set to and then they came out and it was the same old faces. Of course my mate got sent off after a couple of minutes for knocking one of their lads out. Laugh

Wrong Ebul. The Admiral of the Fleet asked permission to attack the Belgrano.
As regards not a danger read up on it and you'll se it was a very real danger.

I've seen the papers mighty. They don't back up your assertion that she was going to sell the Islanders down the river. She was quite explicit. Any deal had to be with the consent of the Islanders.

We were right to send the fleet, I`m not saying otherwise, but no one cared or even knew where the Falklands were (except me and a few others) and Thatcher wanted rid of them two years prior, hence the secret meeting in Switzerland.

We were at war. It was a warship. Where it was sailing and how is irrelevant. Thatcher haters use The Belgrano as a stick to beat her with but it is complete nonsense.

Well I respect your opinion akabula, but I could not see it as a threat really, it was too old.
I know more than the Admiral of the Fleet of course AkabulaLaugh
I still think it was a political as much as a military decisions, but I can see why, we did want peace breaking out until
we had retaken the Falklands.

It's a good job you don't get put in charge of expediting a military conflict ebul. If you were attacked by a bear in the wild you'd be asking him if he would be observing the Marquess Of Queensberry Rules as he was chomping on your leg.

Of course there are usually attempts to negotiate diplomatic settlements to intractable conflicts mighty but the bottom line is Thatcher always maintained publicly and privately that ultimately the Islanders themselves would be the arbiters of what was best for them.

There was indeed a meeting. That much is true. Ridley then went to the Islanders to discuss the proposal for a leaseback arrangement and they told him to shove it. The issue was debated in parliament where once again it was affirmed that the Islanders would be the final arbiters.

And Mrs T a puppet? The officials sent bto deal with her were sent packing with a flea in her ear.
Her message to the Americans, who were trying not to take sides, was loud and clear. Back us!
She reminded them that they were late in coming to our aid in WW2.

Corbyn.

I worked with a bloke who served there, in the late 80s.He considered the whole exercise a great waste of life and funds, although a lot of ex servicemen disagreed with that when Corbyn made his comment sometime last year.

And of course let's not forget that waging and ' winning ' the war for the Falklands, guaranteed Thatcher was swept into No.10 as PM once more. That was her prime motivation right from the start.

@Facts talking rubbish again.

Kenny so you think turning our backs on 3000 British subjects was the way to go?
A foreign country invades and you think we should have just rolled over?
I've only ever known 2 people who served in the Falklands campaign and never heard them say anything negative about the stance we took.
The islanders, who are self governing, voted unanimously to remain British and want no truck with Argentina.
So should we just ignore their wishes?

Facts Mrs t tried to find a resolution to the problem.
You say waged a war but the reality is that we responded to an invasion.

By:

When: 04 Apr 16 15:42
I think Kenny that people invented that story.
The facts look differently.
A resolution was sought but came to nowt.
Even in the run up to the conflict the UK government were in discussions with Argentina.
The invasion triggered the response so are you saying that Mrs T and the Argies colluded?
By:
kenny mann
When: 04 Apr 16 15:55
No, I just think it was in her interests as there were pretty catastrophic economic issues here, and we did technically steal The Falklands in the first place.
By:
akabula
When: 04 Apr 16 16:02
How did we steal the Falklands Kenny and from whom?
Argentina didn't even exist as a sovereign state when we acquired them.
The islands were deserted btw when the first British settlers arrived their so not really sure what Argentinas claim is based on.

When: 04 Apr 16 16:15
We were given the islands by Spain, I think it was a settlement for some dispute.
I know Mrs T benefitted at the polls from the outcome but to say the whole thing was orchestrated is just a nonsense.
We had 2 choices. We either respected the wishes of the islanders or we allowed Argentina to take the islands by force without retaliation.
