I'm very leftist and I don't think immigration is particularly good for the economy. It skews the supply and demand balance and allows unscrupulous businesses to screw their staff even more, to the point where we now celebrate people managing to get on a "living" wage, where zero hour contracts are common place and there is the constant threat that a company can up sticks and move to Eastern Europe or further where the staff will be grateful to accept £1.50 per hour never mind your exorbitant £6.50 or whatever.
What we've seen from Syria and Libya though isn't immigration. It's people escaping war, crazed lunatics and general hellish desperation. To turn our back is inhuman frankly. |

I understand that but people are being slaughtered, houses are being blown apart, children are being exposed to unimaginable horror. We get barely a glimpse of it through the news. On top of that businesses are taking it as an opportunity to make more money.

Yes i agree entirely. We do have a duty to help them. But they also have a duty to look at themselves and say what are we doing wrong. Should we and could we ask what is the nature of our own countries that has allowed such things, is there something we can do.

You see if we take the Iraq war. Did it have to lead to thousands of deaths. Or could it have been a great opportunity for a free and prosperous Iraq with billions of pounds in aid and medical and engineering help?

Maybe it's something that our government and the US government can ask themselves as we went in their, ripped the place apart and had no succession plans whatsoever. This isn't to do with Islam any more than Anders Breivik or Jim Jones are representative of Christianity. The people committing these are frankly either lunatics or people coerced by them for fear of them or their families being slaughtered.
The idea that the people fleeing this are in any way responsible and should look at themselves for the acts committed by Saddam, by Assad, by Al Qaida or by ISIS is ridiculous and based on no more that they come from the same part of the world, look pretty similar from a distance and pray in a vaguely similar fashion. |
