Faith.
Remember, there's a satan too. |

Is faith a psychological need then?
I suppose some people need to believe ... a bit like a child needs to believe in Father Christmas. Anyway, I'm still here ... only joking about the chest pains and being struck down by god. Utter twaddle. |
By:
if there was evidence then there would be no need for faith would there. athiests, muslims, christians lets all get along. hate when people try to debunk other peoples religions. just focus on your own life dont worry about others

About half an hour ago two aeroplanes were circling over my house, so I went outside to investigate. Turns out they were making a very big smiley face in the sky with their contrails.
![]() ![]() ![]() What more evidence do you need than that?.. THERE IS A GOD! ![]() |
By:
Senyatta,
not trying to debunk other people's religions. It's just all twaddle, this god thing. Absolutely no evidence but millions believe ... where are their brains?? |
By:
You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.
My favourite quote, mis-attributed to Carl Sagan. |
By:
There is a God .....and there is no God. God exists and doesn't exist. God can exist and not...he's very clever like that, what wiv him moving in mysterious ways an all that.

meme...they are content...you are not. if you were , their faiteh would not bother you so much to create this thread. they are happy you are not. maybe you should join a religion...there are plenty out there!
By:
What does it matter if someone believes in and follows God and you do not? Leave them to it because God is good..and if you follow good then happy days...and as for the question of 'If God is so good then why do bad things happen?' You have to be of a certain mental age to ask that which is fair enough.
God bless.. |
By:
I wouldn't suggest joining a "religion" cos most of 'em are bullshine.
If you want to find God, search for Him from your heart. Simples. |
By:
Senyatta,
it's not that, I'm just a bit bored with the racing this afternoon, and god hasn't helped me to win. And just out of interest, why do you think people who have faith are content? Are you watching the news, these days? I don't think a lot are content ... and with some, their faith bothers me enormously. Quakers, I don't mind, fanatics, I do. |
By:
most people who believe in god believe he put us here. we can do whatever we want. he wont intervene in anything. then at the end they are judged. pretty simple really. hardly whackos
By:
Religion doesnt ask you to believe in god....it asks you to believe in other people, whom you dont know.
Miracles and contacts always happen to others, and one thing that is constant; humans are liars....so would the knower of everything trust such a vehicle to spread the word? Look what chinese whispers ends up like so how could fanciful events said to have occurred to others while alone millennia ago be anything to base something so substantial as whether you will spend eternity in hell fire or not? utter bobbins, its a manipulation and a sick threat to suggest 'they' know the unknowable and you dont, and that their gang goes to heaven while seemingly everyone else doesnt. Its divisive and alienating by its very nature. |
By:
who cares what they claim to know how does that affect the rest of us? let them be. it seems that most people determined to attack other religions have deeper psychological issues most notably depression. maybe they should look elsewhere to find a meaning to it all
By:
what?
A general accusation against the pious is that religion v.s differing religion is the source of most fighting and hatred. There is actually a more poignant point, the infighting within the same religion is actually even more substantial. Why does this happen? Simple, its mans fallibility, his misinterpretation at best, since both parts cant be correct at least one has it wrong. If I said to you Im going to smash your face in, it might mean something to you and it might not, if a believe says by virtue of logic that if you dont buy into their clique then everything that could possibly happen that you dont want to happen will happen, then thats the most significant threat there is. |
By:
I cant help thinking that humans are just some flawed species that will have its time and die out just like the Dinosaurs and 1000's of other species on this and other planets.
By:
there is good and bad no in between. isn't that what every religion teaches. can't find a fault for society with that at all. whether the are bonkers are not doesn't matter to me or most sane people. just let them be and fair play to them if it makes them happy
By:
But logical dictates that their supposed happyness comes at a cost to those that are threatened.
If we all knew they were definitely wrong then we all could live with it, its a double edged sword, they preach what they cant possible know nor can it be dis proved, so preaching is by definition nefarious |
By:
pretty much all religion at some point says words to the effect of 'trick non believers and share in the spoils'
By:
dont let it get you down mate. i dont believe churches force people in. in fact all the churches around me offer parking to city goers who never go to church. without the parking there a lot of us would be screwed. we only live once dont get bogged down on anything. there will always be religions out there so moaning and trying to attack them will be unsuccessful every time
By:
I wouldnt mind but most can be explained as to how they came up with the things they did.
(roughly)Socrates influenced Plato, Plato influenced Diogenes, Diogenes influenced Jesus and the gaps were drawn in by guessers. Paganism became a traunch of judaism which lead to christianity and then Islam. Turn the other cheek was originally dont avenge injustice etc Thats my theory anyway |
By:
Im not down senyatta
If people choose to believe then thats upto them, but the atheist (or as me, agnostic) has just as much right to be heard as the preacher |
By:
If you try to follow God, if we all tried to follow God (who is GOOD) then the world would be a better place. The fact is, many do not. Hurting and killing does against what God stands for. Anyone who kills in the name of God, does not share the God I trust, that is for sure.
By:
Is it not also true that god created satan?
By:
fallen angel wasnt he?
By:
But the religious have you believe that 'free thought' was created by god, as was evil.
Why create evil in the first place if he is good? 'I am a jealous and vengeful god' Exodus. Dont worship false idols. Did you know there are 7 'foreskins' in different areas of the world all made out to be Jesus's? How about all those false relics made in 'bad faith'? |
By:
Honest. There's no such thing as god ... never been seen, heard whatever. Just a figment of people's imagination.
Just that some people need to believe to be happy, it seems. I'm intelligent and think for myself (the two go together - some intelligent people don't think for themselves on this one) and ask for hard evidence, not hearsay. That's all - hard evidence. Then I'll start to believe there's a god. |
By:
there are a lot more intelligent people than you who are devout to their religion. doctors,politicians....saying you are smart therefore a non believer is pathetic! you are entitled to your opinion though i dont care what or who you believer in. why cant you be the same to religious people? maybe you should speak to someone if it gets to you that much? just a thought...it is not healthy
By:
wtf |
By:
Thats golden that senyatta
![]() First Im on a thread about god on a forum, Im not burning people at the stake....(but some used to do that didnt they, who were those people again?) I never professed to be any more or less intelligent than others simply voiced my theories part of the debate. Diogenes said the act of virtue was reward in itself, that is philosophy I agree with and can explain why people 'do good' (sacrifice etc) Many others have guilty consciences....Tony Blair perhaps who became religious did he not When did I say Im a non believer because I am smart? Again you seem to miss the point that by default religion is threatening to those who dont subscribe, yet you seem to think its me in the wrong for pointing this out. |
By:
so many intelligent role models follow one religion or another. so to call them daft is crazy when they are the ones treating you in hospitals, court etc. calling them crazy and letting them help you stay alive etc...some would call that crazy.
By:
d...i was referring to meme who said hes intelligent and thereofre a non believer in any religion....once again you are waffling about something else! have a brew mate and chillax...it is a rest day afterall!
By:
All this arguing/divided opinion is going to end up in a holy war on here soon...
By:
Not many miracles happening theses days.
By:
There are some other bits that although dont disprove religion, for me make it rather questionable.
What would a supreme being get from the 'love' from a human, one that hes created himself and made all the rules for? That would be like me writing a piece of software telling me it loved me or some bacteria that had a fondness for me. If go knows everything then he also knows what it would take to make an individual a believer, so who the **** is he teasing? himself? The future is also supposedly know by god....so however many time you change your mind it was always destiny, and therefore not exactly free thought. |
By:
Well, as I said earlier, if you are truly seeking the Lord - you will find Him within your heart.
Whatever, He'll be back afore long. 1.01 NAP. Yup. |
By:
sounds awfully arbitrary trilby, care to elaborate?
So you've had contact I take it? Could you also tell me whatever you believe to be the manifestation of god, how do you interpret it to be 'him'? |

Is faith a psychological need then? there is little doubt in my mind that the emergence of irrational hope was a massive evolutionary advantage in thinking primates. then mix in the way we think about unexplained phenomena and how our brains are inherently wired to assume some form of anthropomorphic agency possessed with superpowers, chuck in a bit of group think and a boatload of cognitive dissonance, and hey presto, you have religion. so not so much a need; rather our irrational monkey brains are extremely easily seduced by these sorts of ideas. |

What does it matter if someone believes in and follows God and you do not? Leave them to it because God is good..and if you follow good then happy days...and as for the question of 'If God is so good then why do bad things happen?' You have to be of a certain mental age to ask that which is fair enough. God bless.. If God is good, why does the so called "Word of God" the holy books, contain so much evil? Does one have to be of a certain mental age to ask that? Please let us know when you have an answer. Most religious people are intrinsically good and wouldn't harm a fly. The same goes for most people. They only have a superficial knowledge of their book and claim it is the word of God. There are others though who have read it in detail and want to impose even the unsavoury bits on the rest of us. They gain their strength and legitimacy from the number of "sheep" in the flock who tick the "christian" box on census forms and other official documents. This is why we need to show them the error of their ways. Fundamental Christians oppose many reforms, abortion, contraception, right to euthanasia, rights of women and homosexuals, recognition of relationships outside of marriage, work on the Sabbath among other things. In America some doctors who have performed legal abortions have been murdered by religious fanatics. They are not benign and should not be left alone. |
