 ....Ants farming Aphids on a spent [b]Pink Cosmos flower[/b]...not the prettiest of scenes but fascinating nonetheless...... ...the Ants love the sweet sugary water the aphids produce...Honeydew.......and they "milk" this Honeydew by gently stroking the Aphids abdomen with their antennae.... The ants are effectively taking care of their "herd" and protect them from natural predators such as Ladybirds and Lacewings to ensure the supply of Honeydew keeps coming.... To ensure the Aphids don't wander off the Ants release a special chemical at the boundaries that acts like a fence......and also...if too many of the Aphids start developing wings...and think about flying off......the Ants bite their wings off........ouch!!!!! Fascinating stuff. |

...thanks leopard...
...yes....all from the garden....only got it into it about 3 years ago.... ...great feeling when something you planted creates little eco systems and attracts things and helps sustain them.....pretty cheap as well when doing it from seed. Anything I wasn't sure of I just googled. Today was amazing by the way...loads of activity....everything is a couple of days behind so will post todays stuff in the middle of the week. |
