Marvellous news. Good for Corbyn. Good for his supporters. Arguably good for the Labour party and the country to once again have a genuine choice between the two main parties. I may not agree with much of what he stands for but this is just the kind of shake up which politics needs. Which is probably why the fight against Corbyn has been so vicious.

A word of warning to his supporters though. You elected him and so if the country roundly rejects Labour at the next election I do hope you won't be bawling your eyes out about how he was robbed.

Mikael

A lot of the peope who voted for him are going to get the surprise of their lives in the run up to the next election Mikael. It will make the character assassination of a good man and brilliant orator (Michael Foot) look like a eulogy.

Love the way the bbc were covering the leadership race, they were reporting on it daily until it was known that Corbyn was a cert, then they gave up on the coverage.

I don't doubt it EO. I still think Foot would have won regardless, had it not been for the Falklands.

It is the litmus test above all.
All the accusations of the Tories; 'be careful what you wish for'
I've always seen that as the argument of protectionism.

Now we find out for better or for worse, this will determine categorically whether I shall remain with the socialist ethos in future. I'm too young to have witness socialism in action before, if they goes tits up I'll never fight its corner again.

I can't agree with that Mikael. The left seized on The Falklands but it was the economy which did for them. Thatcher told the country the medicine she was giving would be hard but that it would work and timing is everything. In 1981 nobody believed her. In 1982 the first signs were present and by 1983 people were convinced. Whether they were right to be is a moot point.

Put another way if people voted for leaders who gave them victory in war and prestige around the world they would never have got rid of Churchill in 45.

I'm not sure about that. The SNP have the ball. Labour will only get a look in if the SNP drop it. Which isn't to say they won't win some seats back but I don't think we will return to the old days.

I'm not a supporter but Corbyn is a far more impressive personality than Cameron and a offers a clear choice so at least things could get interesting.

He gained 251,417 or 59.5% of first preference votes - 40% more than his nearest rival Mr Burnham, who got 19%.
Ms Cooper was third on 17% and Ms Kendall a distant fourth with 4.5% of the vote

Wonder what post Dianne Abbot will have in Corbyn's shadow cabinet? Shadow home secretary perhaps?

I suspect we will be seeing her on the front benches sadly Crazy

What a train wreck of a party.

I agree with that EO post.  Politics needs a shake up like this. Hopefully the kids will vote for him. I hated the way all the lefties went along for the ride when Blair showed them how to get elected, showed that power was more important than principles to them.  I wonder how this will effect the lib dem voter share?

There will be one hell of a character assassination on him from the media,  luckily he does seem to have more character than the likes of Milliband.  Well done Jezza and good luck.

A taste of the other tips from the opening poster concerning the Labour Leadership contest.

Visitors to the Politics Forum looking at threads from May onwards will also see any number of quite catastrophic tips given by the opening poster, on a range of UK political markets. Some are mentioned earlier in this thread.

There is also the far more serious matter of offering odds on the 'Number of Seats won by UKIP at the 2015 General Election', odds which a number of forumites accepted, but no payouts have yet been forthcoming on winning bets, less still any integrity to discuss payment plans.

Well done btw on anyone who did actually successfully back Corbyn to win the Leadership Contest at the fancy prices.

It is an amazing turn of events.

Labour grandees putting Corbyn forward at the eleventh hour (hoping to humiliate him in my view) must surely rank amongst the worst of political own goals.  Nothing more than they deserve, of course, but I genuinely fear for the consequences to our country; we need a strong and effective opposition.
