im rubbish at cryptic crosswords. i only ever get the answers how i did this one, thinking of what would fit with the letters and the last clue. the one thats a clue for the entire thing. only after i thought of it did i notice that lava is hot stuff and the telegraph is a tory paper. not a very hard question compared to the times ones, lucky if i get 3 answers on that before i give up and have a go on the easy one they have.

well, i say the times cryptic one is hard. its not so much hard as "boys club" in that half the clues mean something that doesnt have much logic to it, its just "always meant that" on the times crossword. so unless youve done it for ages and know what things always mean, youve got no chance.

I think IDS is doing a great job in driving down the cost of the welfare state.

No! Really? You? Get away!

Absolutely, but he hasn't gone hardly far enough in cutting down the cost.
It's no coincidence that half of Africa and most of all the other economic migrants in the world are trying to get to the UK simply because of our generous welfare state.
We must be mad for letting it get so far out of hand. I suppose we have the Labour government to thank for that.

yep a disgusting cant of the first order.  Lies constantly about claimed successes and denies his ****-ups.

Just like Theresa May, a grossly incompetent minister who refuses to take responsibility for failures on their watch.

A common misconception, especially among little Englanders.

It isn't that generous, but it IS easier to fiddle. Poorly trained and overstretched staff - fault of the minister responsible. In other words, IDS is a dolt.

Only if you don't believe your eyes.
How many of these long term scroungers are underweight or poorly dressed?
How many cars on the road are funded from welfare payments?
Look at the scroungers' kids all kitted out in new clothes while they're munching on their pop and crisps in their pushchairs. Being pushed by their mothers with a cigarette in their mouth carrying a can of pop, and another bun in the oven ready to claim for.

It's no wonder they won't work when they can get everything free off the state.

Are there any state food banks? Does IDS or any of his family need to use them?

Dr Crippen

Ignorance and arrogance are not attractive features. And why are you venting your spleen at this section of our society?
You'd be better employed  ' looking up ' at the fat cats who are stealing countless times the revenue that you think the ' scroungers' are getting. This Tory government love people like you. You have fell for the biggest con trick ever. I.e create a divisive society and get the less well off beating up and blaming their peers.

I left the UK to live in Ireland for two reasons, I have been followed by many members of my extended family. The reasons were -

1. The UK continues to suffer from the guilt of the "empire".
2. I spoke to many of those in a military hospital who had to fight for the UK 1939-45, to a man they say "if we had known this was how the country was going to turn out we wouldn't have bothered ".

Every time I read information like that above I know I made the right decision.

Absolutely, many food banks are funded by councils using state money.

Does IDS or any of his family need to use them?

Of course not they work for a living.

As i've said before i fully support IDS in his attempt to get individuals and their families off welfare however he's not doing enough. It's not that many years ago that the undeserving poor would have ended up in the workhouse and whilst not advocating the return of such institutions a way has to be found of getting the feckless, indolent and lazy into working for a living. It is reasonably clear that there are tens of thousands of families where they've been breeding like rabbits and have sponged off the State receiving generous housing and cash benefits and spending their days doing nothing to contribute to Society. If i were in IDS's position I would stop the problem from multiplying by preventing the women in these 'problem' families from having children. Thereafter all able bodied men and women under the retirement age would be either given three months to get jobs and if they fail their benefits would be restricted to subsistence level. They would then be made to live in old army camps and subjected to a military type regime with the aim of instilling discipline ,getting them fit and giving them training  for various vocations.
To some this might sound a tad harsh but in my view drastic measures are needed to deal with this huge problem. It's ridiculous that the tax payer should have to subsidise these people.

No, decent people work for a living, if they are lucky enough to have a decent job. The likes of IDS and the Cameron crew meanwhile, are trying to make sure 100% of the workforce are on zero hours contracts. That way they can never be "scroungers".
