Probably about 99%.

Fred, there were HUNDREDS of concentration camps, not all of which were extermination camps. It would have been virtually impossible NOT to know about them.

Dachau was only 10 miles from Munich. There were many concentration camps in Germany of which the Germans obviously would have know about.
However, all of the extermination camps were outside of Germany.
I think it's quite possible that the average German did not know the holocaust was going on...

Think about it. Jews, Communists, Freemasons, certain clerics, Gypsies and many others disappearing and not returning. Soldiers home on leave with stories of horror. Camps in Germany, while not ostensibly "death camps", nevertheless saw possibly millions die from starvation and disease. Up to 3 million Russian POWs died in various German camps.

The allies knew as early as 1942 that something was going on so its hard
to believe the German people didn't know.

I'd be more than happy to avail myself of your vast background reading of the subject Alias. Given this I'm sure you can come up with something much better than your pitiful efforts so far. Comparing what happened in the final solution to the Jews and what is happening in Palestine? But never let it be said I'm not prepared to learn.

But please no more lies. I've never defended Pinochet. I said he wasn't a fascist and various academics agree with that statement. I also suggested that to hand over to democratic government a little over a decade later after the Allende communist disaster were the actions of a man who loved his country and wanted what was best for it. Even do I denounce the nurders committed under his regime. Even the communists. Unlike the communists there and all over the world who would burn every blade of grass in an attempt to prove the success of their failed ideology.

So the floor is yours. Excoriate Israel with the parallels between current day Palestine and the final solution resulting in six million dead Jews.

Never underestimate either the stupidity of the masses or their ability to turn a blind eye especially when within living memory the middle classes had found thmselves starving and burning bank notes to keep warm. It's harsh to say but the Jews were the proverbial frog being boiled. By the time they came to the final solution with a few notable exceptions I suspect the average German neither wanted to know nor cared about the plight of those the Germans wanted to exterminate.

No one had mentioned the "Final Solution" until your post of 23:12 last night, EO, and for you to criticise me for not identifying which Warsaw uprising, then liken same to the Final Solution demonstrates astonishing ignorance on your part. Unless you're even thicker than we all imagine, you'll realise the parallels between a) illegal Israeli expansion and land grabbing and Lebensraum, and b) the brutal and superior force used by the Nazis in EITHER Warsaw uprising and the Israeli action in Gaza.

Further evidence of your limp grasp of reality is your blanket use of terms like "Communists". Do you actually believe a nutter like e.g. Stalin was a Communist? Try and think of other examples, like maybe Nelson Mandela.

No more lies? What, like saying Pinochet wasn't a Fascist? Democracy put Allende in government, Pinochet with CIA help illegally usurped that government. Who's next for your whitewashing EO, Franco maybe?

I wouldn't worry too much about being accused of anti semitism if I were you. You'll have more time on your hands rebutting accusations of stupidity, confusion, lack of clarity and historical inaccuracy to be worrying about anything else. Next time you reach for a wholly inappropriate comparison I'd suggest you do a little background reading. Shifting the perception of being thought a fool can be difficult if you make foolish comments.

Which would sort of imply that there are absolutely no comparisons to be drawn between the Warsaw ghetto of 1943 and Gaza today, however:

The Warsaw Ghetto was composed of Jews forced out of their homes and herded into one small section of the city.
The population of Gaza is composed largely of refugees and their descendents, most of whom were forced to flee their homes during the 1948 war and subsequent invasion by Israel, and is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Like the Ghetto, in the last decade the Gaza Strip has been surrounded by a barrier that has literally imprisoned 1.5 million people, half of whom are kids under 17.

Like the Nazis, Israel has almost full command of the territory around Gaza and controls everything going in and out.

Increasing restrictions on food, fresh drinking water, electricity and medical supplies by the Israeli military have led to severe levels of malnutrition, disease and unemployment.

The tunnels of Gaza have been compared to those used by Jews to smuggle food and other essential goods into the Warsaw Ghetto.

Resistance in both Warsaw and Gaza has been met by indiscriminate bombardment by air and land, and subsequent military invasion.

Of course they are not exactly the same: The Warsaw ghetto was merely a holding pen for people bound for slaughter, while Gaza is more like a concentration camp. And it can be argued that unlike the Nazis, Israel is not planning a genocide of the Palestinian people, but as long as Israel refuses to accept and agreeable two-state solution what they are doing to the people in Gaza amounts to a war crime not dissimilar to Nazi concentration camps.

epicurean what fukkin difference does it make what the Hamas charter says? NOTHING justifies deliberately Israel targeting civilians - and in particular hospitals and schools - for bombing.
By:

When: 31 Jul 14 16:20
You are right if that was the case but in the fog of battle terrible things happen. 'Friendly Fire' where troop fire on their own side happened in Iraq and Afghanistan with our own forces .

Were it proven that orders were given to deliberately fire on civilians that would be a War Crime by Israel . The firing of missiles with the intention of causing civilian deaths by Hamas is a War Crime which the U.N. have stated.

The civilian deaths are tragic but to have a blinkered view of the situation and totally dismissing the  fascist agenda of Hamas and apportioning  blame to Israel is not balanced .
By:

When: 31 Jul 14 16:29
How did I know you would find some way to justify it.

According to the UN, before the conflict began the IDF were given the specific locations and co-ordinates of all schools and hospitals, yet despite having the latest guided missile technology they managed a concerted assault on both. To even pretend that this was anything other than deliberate is just propaganda...or blinkered. It is a WAR CRIME pure and simple.

Remember one thing about the Hamas rockets. For the most part the rockets are fired into Palestinian territory stolen illegally by Israel - which many people think is justified.
By:

Tip you may be  right but I explained what can happen in a conflict situation but your view epitomises  the problem where people see a complex situation as being the fault of one side

Both sides have a strong conviction they are right but in those cases experience tells me the truth is somewhere in the middle .

The reason I slightly favour the Israeli position is because Hamas avowed intention is the total destuction of Israel.

If someone deliberately blew up my kids when they were at school I would want revenge too and do anything to get it. Like any normal person.

I sometimes wonder if that is Israel´s alternative agenda - kill some family members and create more Hamas supporters - then they can kill them.

Epicurean should also know it is LEGAL under international law to fight Occupation forces.

Collective punishment is a war crime.

Collective punishment is a form of retaliation whereby a suspected perpetrator's family members, friends, acquaintances, sect, neighbours or entire ethnic group is targeted. The punished group may often have no direct association with the other individuals or groups, or direct control over their actions. In times of war and armed conflict, collective punishment has resulted in atrocities, and is a violation of the laws of war and the Geneva Conventions. Historically, occupying powers have used collective punishment to retaliate against and deter attacks on their forces by resistance movements (e.g. destroying entire towns and villages where such attacks have occurred).

The doctrine is defined in a 2009 report by the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel as follows:
"The military approach expressed in the Dahiye Doctrine deals with asymmetrical combat against an enemy that is not a regular army and is embedded within civilian population; its objective is to avoid a protracted guerilla war. According to this approach Israel has to employ tremendous force disproportionate to the magnitude of the enemy’s actions."

You nutters can post the same line as many times as you like. Provide the evidence that Israel is deliberately killing women and children. Not that they are lacking caution or have been negligent in their approach. Give us definitive evidence. If you don't have it shut your cake holes and think before you post in future.

Don't be so dishonest alias. You didn't use the words themselves but it is clear you had the final solution in mind with your reference to what the Nazis did in Warsaw with the Jews which was an integral part of the final solution. It was a sick and totally dissimilar analogy which could only have arisen from either a simple minded fool or someone with no appreciation of history. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume the latter given your feeble attempt to draw parallels between the two.
